Hi I am having the same issues as wyzik and absoluthams. I can play divx movies from dvd, cd or flash drive but i cannot stream the same movies from windows media player 11. Currently I have to use TVersity to stream these files. I bought my xbox360 after xmas and it updated automatically. But the fact that it will play divx from dvds and flash drives tells me it will has the codes, though not the latest to take advantage of the divx movies with menues. I also have the Divx converter, Divx player and Divx Author installed on my PC and Windows media player can play the divx movies just fine. So does anybody know why I can't stream divx movies using Windows media player 11 and do you know how I can fix this? Thanks in advance.

optikool

@absoluthams: @wyzik:

There could be a few reasons as to why thats happening. Of the times that happened to me, the reasons have been that i lost connection to the computer or you disconnected from live after getting the fall update. I had to stay connected to live after playing my first movie, it came up with an error saying it cant play it and that it needed to download an update. You let it download the update, then after that everything should work fine. BTW, I ran into a bunch of problems with my xbox not detected my PC over the network, and there ended up being the most random fix for it that I would never have guessed. Here's the link in case others are having similar WMP 11/Vista/xbox connectivity issues. It helped me immensely, so it could help others. [www.neowin.net]

Elusivelattice

After getting the update, I plugged a flash drive full of Top Gear episodes into the 360, and it played them just fine. I was having issues getting the 360 to "see" my XP computer with WMP11, but now I have that issue taken care of. Sort of. I can see the files on the PC (the same ones I could play from the flash drive, mind you), but when I try to get the 360 to play them across my network, I get an error saying that it's unplayable content, "Status Code 69-C00D36C4". Every single file on my PC is "unplayable" to the 360. Has anyone seen and overcome this issue?

wyzik

I was toying around within the update last night. I haven't been this geek thrilled since gmail enabled IMAP.

For grins I created a brand new live account with a brand new email account before playing any content from my home box. After streaming a tv show, I started to stream the movie Transformers and got through half of it. What do I find in my brand new email box this morning? Spam for some viral media Transformers teaser. Hmmm.

For now, I'm blocking traffic from the 360 to 'net and looking for my tin foil hat.

------

anyway, to get this up and running, DO NOT try to use the windows media center/extender functionality built into the xbox. that won't work at all except for wmv's or whatever. open up Windows Media PLAYER 11 and select "skin | full mode" and then click on the "Library" tab and choose "media sharing". in there the xbox should be visible and then set to "allow".

then go to the xbox and click on the blue tab that says "media" (which is between "games" and system") and then choose "videos" and then click on "change video source" with the blue X button. from there you should be able to connect to your PC's WMP11 and then start watching videos saved under "my documents" or whatever the equivalent is in Vista

jcy

rusdude: The console supports h.264 in MP4 files. It's possible they'll add support for matroska (MKV) in the future.

Failing that, assuming the audio format is AAC-LC, it's possible to remux the file from MKV to MP4, which is far faster than encoding. You can also remux and re-encode just the audio, which is still many times faster than re-encoding the video.

Of course, you won't get subtitle support, unless Microsoft supports MP4 subtitles (and you change the sub format too).

I'll agree that the lack of Media Centre support is annoying, but it's just that, an annoyance. It doesn't stop you from doing anything, since you can still stream via WMP11. It just means you need to switch between the dashboard and media extender.

guspaz

timerider: The dashboard (the entire OS, really) fits in a very small 16MB partition on the disk. The update is 7MB, and is strictly meant for updating the very tightly coded OS. There isn't room on the OS partition for codec libraries.

This isn't to say that it's not technically possible (just more difficult) to bundle this all together, it's just not really practical anyhow. Everybody would have to download extra codecs when most people don't need them.

Might I suggest that, if it's available in your area, you get broadband? Where I live, "lite" broadband costs about the same as dialup and yet is ten times faster. The only exception would be if you're in the middle of nowhere and can't get DSL or cable.

guspaz

I have a question for all the tech savy people out there. I was wondering why microsoft would incorporate Divx/Xvid support and then I started thinking about compression. As far as I know Divx or Mpeg 4 offers two times the compression over the DVD format Mpeg 2 (compression of Mpeg 1 that is).

Would this compression allow for the incorporation of more video/higher video quality with less disk space usage.?

Just courious as video content is one of the biggest usage of disk space far as I know and the fact that HD video would take higher amounts of disk space I see this as somewhat of a fix to the limited storage space of DVD disks.

Again I am not too knowledgeable when it comes to this topic and am looking for more insight. Thanks in advance.

Genra

I'm speechless. Great, they added DivX support to the 360, but it doesn't work when the 360 is in media extender mode? WTF where they thinking? What idiot at MS thought that it would be a good idea to allow a new type of media to be played, but not through their flagship media interface? This is such a stupid call on their part, and now I am still forced to use transcode 360 when the 360 will do native divx... Or log out of the sweet interface and hit the dash board? Oh yeah, the wife will love that...
I am stunned by the stupidity of this decision, seriously.

mont6760

There are way too many, "what the hell types" I for one am well happy that MS have finally added, DivX/Xvid support, shame they did not do it before I purchased my latest DivX/Xvid player to replace a dead player (now about the fifth I have owned). Nice to have another option viewing my extensive collection of encoded media. Have a few friends who will be well chuffed with this, nice one MS.

sguilly
