Obviously for systems with more than 3GB of RAM, there is no Microsoft operating system which is really viable, so my upgrade path is Ubuntu, which now (since version 7.10) runs all the major Windows productivity software seamlessly. I can't see any reason to endure the insecurity and pessimizing performance liabilities of XP or (God forbid!) Vista, nor would I enjoy having an arm and a leg severed and the remaining two tied behind my back before entering a triathalon.

XP, I don't know anybody who wasn't more than happy to upgrade to. The switch to the NT kernel, with its greater stability, was a big selling point. Everyone I know, at least, was eager to be rid of the ghastly beast that is Win9x.

Vista is the ME of the NT product line, quite frankly. Same kernel, but runs slower thanks to all the bloated "features" nobody gives a crap about anyway. And, even worse than ME, they went and bundled DRM spyware into the OS! And don't get me started on the whole "User Access Control" thing... Frankly, an OS is at its best when you don't even realize it's there. And Vista... thanks largely to UAC, Vista is a total attention whore.

Take it from somebody who's dealt with both; XP is the far superior system. Latest isn't always greatest.

I'll make it this simple: I have a legitimate OEM disc for Windows Vista Home Premium. It was installed on a laptop for about a month. It only stayed installed that long because I was too lazy to uninstall it till I got tired of Vista's crap and put XP on it.

im dual booting XP and Vista x64 ultimate and have only booted XP a handful of times in the 4 months ive had this config.

I've not had any major issues with Vista. It feels less "techie" and more general-user focused. But it still has the means to satisfy IT-types.

I've got XP on one machine at home and Vista on the laptop and I find myself using Vista 95%.

We are obviously legally licensed and all with a corporate product key. You click "Continue" there is a 1 out 10 chance you may see it once more before it finally goes away. Still a mystery and a big reason why we won't be going to Vista for a while.

Hell, my legal copy of Vista at work didn't accept the key on the packaging! I had to try another key from another media kit before it finally worked.

No, it's not. Most of the copies on the torrents now have Vista Loader 2.0 integrated into the install -- it's just as easy to install as a corporate edition of XP is: just put the CD in and install. And even if you could only find a plain copy, you can still easily find Vista Loader 2.0, which installs itself by simply double clicking on a batch file, on torrents.

I love vista. Sure it needs better hardware to run smoothly, but if you can afford it why not... who doesn't want a faster computer anyways, vista or not. Gives me an excuse to upgrade.

I did a clean install of Vista Ultimate 64bit on my home PC and it runs OK. Its pretty, but it appears to run slower. I can't seem to get drivers for my Dell laser printer. You might run into issues with 3rd party software autorun features not liking the 64bit OS. If you just open the CD rom and look for the installer, the software seems to install fine.

I was going to try some games, but my DVD drive just died and waiting for Newegg to RMA replace.

That being said, my legitimate copy of x64 Vista took ~5 months to destroy its own partition and stop booting entirely, so I'm back on XP, and loving it.

The performance difference from going back to XP is so great, that I'm holding off the computer upgrade I was looking at, because it feels like I've already got a new machine. I certainly don't miss all the compatibility, stability, and I/O problems I was having under Vista.

It worked fine for about 4 months and then just stopped working. I tried troubleshooting the issue with MS but they were not able to help. It was sorta scary to see how close Windows Update is to the core of the OS. If it would have been able to completely uninstall and then reinstall then it wouldn't have been much of an issue.

Regardless, I ended up doing a full restore and now she is up and running like a champ. Overall I enjoy using Vista to XP. Sure it's a resource hog and boot/shut down times are insane, but its positives over XP over weigh the pain it is to do a complete system restore.

VISTA is an OS that needs hardware upgrades and distributors are making a good few bucks when the costumer returns for upgrades, just so VISTA can load. I've also seen distributors blame the lack of performance on VISTA and do downgrades to the now more expensive XP. (I dont know about you guys, but I've certainly seen a spike in the price of XP lately)

Lets say you have the cash to get yourself a brand new VISTA machine with all the hardware that you need to run the OS at perfection. You still need to do the software upgrades for commonly used programs. Do you have the ability to run XP programs in VISTA??? ...hell yeah. Will they always work properly??? ...hell no. Will VISTA run all XP programs??? ...hell no. Yet another issue... COMPATIBILITY. So who's fault is this? Software makers fell asleep at the wheel? MS not being completly open with their stuff? The real issue here is the costumer. When companies can't get their sh!t together the consumer gets it in the arse.

If you offer the consumer a choice between 2 pounds of poop and 5 pounds of poop, the consumer will take the 2 pounds of poop over the 5 just because it makes less of a mess. The problem was that people's choice of the 2 pounds worth of poop was taken away, and were forced to take the 5 pounds worth of poop. We're seing that costumers want less of a mess and distributors are starting to get the idea.
