yea that's really smooth. my latitude x1 doesn't even do the cube that smoothly. too bad the screen is only 7 inches.

for instructions on how to set up Ubuntu and other OSes (including WinXP) on an eee there is a big community at eeeuser.com, which is really helpful.

Personally, I have Ubuntu running from an SD card, an have left the default Xandros install on the SSD. That way I can get online in 10 seconds from cold boot if I quickly want to check email or something on the net, and I can still boot into the more familiar Ubuntu for longer sessions.

It does XP fine. XP running off the SD card is slow but I'll deal for the ability to dual boot between Linux and XP. Bring on the PCIe SSDs!

Oh, and yeah I'm not surprised Compiz works fine. It's an 800x480 display... it doesn't have to DO much. Could probably run WoW at max settings at that resolution (if you could fit it on the damn thing. :D)

Welllll......
that's because Linux is not the resource hog that windoze is. You probably could have run that on a machine with an 600mHz processor and have it perform equally well...

Just for some "real-world" info, Compiz still doesn't skip a beat with 10-12 windows or so open. If you map Scale (Expose for the Mac people) to something convient (I use the Menu key) it makes juggling windows in 800x480 MUCH easier.

PS: Compiz runs even smoother than on my old Radeon 9100 laptop (which may be due in part to the hack-job drivers)

Why switch to Ubuntu? All the bling-bling runs just fine in Eee Xandros, with some work (makes Easy Mode kinda interesting).

At least for normal use, most people would only set up the different sides of the "cube" and "expose" features to be static. Under those conditions, even an old GeForce 2 could keep up with it. RAM and processing power are a different matter, though; you could probably keep open a lot of text windows and an e-mail client, but too many OpenOffice spreadsheets would be ill-advised. The Intel GMA900 ain't going to be winning any awards (other than slowest of the pack), but it's really not likely to be the bottleneck on anything but hardware lighting.

Rob C, the ATi 1270 is a x300 core shrunk down. If you need any more video power than an Intel GMA will give you, you need to go to something that isn't integrated. You can get low- to mid- end nVidia 7600 series cards on the market for not much more than the typical machine, and it's quite worthwhile.

The problem isn't the cards themselves, it's their drivers. My work pc also has a GMA900 and runs a whole bunch of (animated) windows at a time without breaking a sweat. My home PC had a ATI x850 which would run (after 2 months of experimentation) Compiz with for 5 minutes, then it crashed.
My new card is an 8800gt, for which I can't even get the drivers installed.

Drivers are EVERYTHING. Intel gets this right in opensource.

now try opening a program on one of them. Oops...it lagged out. Too bad.

This thing only has GMA900 graphics. I was going to get one, But I can get a nice dell 1521 with an ATi 1270 in it. Best integrated graphics avail.

Sorry, but I'm not seeing anything amazing. It's just a bunch of identical textures with the old gears screen saver mixed in. At no time is anything really being done, so it's not that surprising that it doesn't break a sweat. It's like those touch demos that are nothing but some dude rotating photographs, as though that's what everyone sits around doing at work for 8 hours a day.

Go here to get a howto on installing Ubuntu on the EEE.

Compiz is installed and enabled on the latest ubuntu (Gutsy) so there's not much to do than just install it and enjoy.

(You might want want to run "sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager" to get the settings manager for compiz so you can finetune everything to your taste)

@strider_mt2k: I'll describe it for you: umm, there's a window.. it shows ubuntu on an eee (mmm, this is something to behold!)... wait, there's another window that appears by doing one of those beryl tricks where the first desktop rotates on a cube over to the next desktop. Holy shit! he's got six (6) desktops all running and is going from desktop to desktop...

OK, having me do this is kind of like watching ASCII Star Wars... :)
