Well... I'd have to say that nearly every console I have ever owned has attracted lots and LOTS of roaches. But every two weeks or so I clean out my ashtray so the roach buildup can start anew. I still don't get all the 360 fan jokes. Mines wisper quiet- definitely less noise than the previous xbox. After the constant noise jokes I would assume that mine wasn't functioning properly but this console has gone two years with no RRoD. Maybe that's the solution to the RRoD! Everyone! Unplug your fans!!!

Does the Wii have a fan?
I'm guessing the CD loading slot thingie at the front makes for easy access and the lack of a fan makes for warm toasty Wii insides. That sounds like the perfect home for the roaches.

Keep in mind, roaches are pretty dang hard to get away from in Japan. There are only two thing things aside from food (especially the left over residue in a beer can...don't ask...) that roaches love. Moisture and heat.

And if you've ever been in Japan, you know they've got plenty of both (Tsuyu anybody ???). Thus, they're everywhere.

Pretty much everyone in suburban and rural Japan (which is where I spent most of my time there) has a can of Roach spray in a fairly handy place in their homes (no matter how clean), and they don't try to hide it. You will frequently see people spray the shrubs along the street in front of their homes or small businesses and see hundreds of roaches writhing and dying, as most of them are actually hatched in the wild.

Until winter anyway. The cold takes care of'em pretty good. That and the standard precautions (caulking...roach baits..and the occasional roach motel to monitor their presence) keeps most homes free of infestation. Though adult bugs will still wander in from time to time...

As for the Wii attracting them via ultrasound...I guess it could be, but I'd need to see some more conclusive evidence before I'd flat out believe it. Many Japanese homes/living rooms are pretty spartan so there's not a lot of places for Roaches to hide from the light (and they do hate the light). But I'm guessing the Wiis are out and in place for long stretches of time. Add to that the heat factor and it makes sense even w/ out the ultrasound...

I think roaches and other pests generally like to incubate themselves in warm places. If you have your wii on standby all the time it's probably a pretty warm place to be. It also has plenty of openings for the buggers to get into.

Mostly, this will only be a problem if you have a roach problem to begin with. If your house is clean, then you probably have nothing to worry about.

I actually saw something similar last weekend. A friend was playing his Wii with some other people when he suddenly went into the kitchen looking like something was on fire.

Nothing was on fire but there were a ton of ants living inside his Wiimote. There seemed to be a lot of them on the back of the battery cover but even after they shook the thing out for a good solid 10 minutes they kept finding more and more inside it.

He said he never spilled anything inside his wiimote but something definitely attracted those ants to it.

I'm pretty sure roaches like electronics in general. That roach extermination (Vexcon) episode of Dirty Jobs with Mike Row grossed me out when he picked up a cordless phone and a bunch of roaches scurried out of it.

my original xbox definitely attracts roaches in my moderately roach-infested brooklyn apartment. once i opened it up, held it upside-down, and gave it a good shake and about ten roaches, some living and some dead, fell onto my floor. i think it's the heat that attracts them.
