Potter takes film franchise crown

The Harry Potter series is due two further outings
The Harry Potter film series has become the biggest in box office history, beating James Bond and Star Wars.

The five movies have taken $4.47bn (£2.2bn) around the world, surpassing the $4.44bn (£2.19bn) made by the spy franchise's 22 outings to date.

The six Star War films now sit in third place, with takings of $4.23bn (£2bn).

There are still two Harry Potter films to be released next year and in 2010, based on the final instalments of the popular books by author JK Rowling.

Yes, Batman is dark, but he supposed to be a *good guy*. He doesn't cross the line that bad guys do. He finds another way. And he is repeatedly forced to face that the other way invariably leads to those he's incarcerated doing more harm than if Batman had just offed them.

But more to the point, the fact that your initial complaint is about how unattractive Gyllenhal is is telling in your priorities. And you complain about the joker not having any gimmicks. Yuck. Go rent Batman Forever and Batman and Robin since it sounds like camp is what you're looking for. I'm sure you'll find they aren't checked out.

First, this was the book that taught me that the comic book business was rotten to the core. Remember the Miller-signed editions? They sold for, iirc, $75 list. Every shop took orders. Little kids paid (to them) big money in advance. By the time deliveries were half done, the book was going for over $1000 on the secondary market. With just *one* exception (A Few Books and Records, the awesome shop of my best friend, Spencer Few, now, sadly, long deceased), *every* single mofo comics dealer in Houston ran the same scam. They refunded the money of the kids who paid in advance, told them their book was never coming in, and then sold the books for the market rate when it finally arrived. That's when I figured out that comic book shops were basically in the business of ripping off little kids. I still have my books from those days, thousands of 'em. But I gave up collecting and haven't bought more than a dozen "graphic novels" in the last 20 years.

Second, I really wish that someone would make that book into a movie. I want to see Batman die (well, at least as dead he got in the book which, I guess, really means just retired). I'd like to see, given the Batman/Robin fanfic and homoerotic undertones that so many people insist on seeing, how the filmakers would handle the whole notion of a 12-year-old girl as Robin (and especially how they'd handle the innocent, enthusiastic embrace she gives a nude and physically broken Batman as he emerges from the depths of the Batcave where he retreated when the fire of his soul came so, so close to going out). I'd like to see the politics handled well; they are more relevant today than they were when they were originally written.

There's real meat in that story. It would make a hell of a movie. Why doesn't someone just do it?

You forgot to mention Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's iconic work Batman: Year One, which Batman Begins also borrows heavily from.

Can't hollywood just make a direct translation of these works into a film instead of mangling several different sources then throwing in their own tinsel town schlock?

On the other hand I Am Legend looked like total shit stretched onto the IMAX screen... every wide shot was super mega fisheyed and the action scenes felt like I was sitting too close and I was in the furthest seat in the house.

I wish I still had that book (as well as a few other high value ones I had in the past). Of course, I sold them at a tidy profit after a few years, I paid whatever the cover price was, I think it was $2.95, sold it for about $250 in '90. Not sure what they are worth now but they were really historic, when you think about it, with what both Batman and Frank Miller have now become.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (1986) single-handedly brought back Batman to the upper echelon of comics, so that he could truly be taken seriously again. Batman was older, dark, realistic, and his technology was gothic, meaty, and scary.

The batmobile in the new movies reminds me of the batmobile in Batmen: TDKR. The Batman of the new movies behaves like the young version of the one in Frank Miller's comics.

The thing about Batman is though, unlike Star Wars and Star Trek no one person can claim the character of Batman as his own. So it makes it very easy for a new generation to reinterpret the character in that decades style, since the story it's self is a timeless vengeance story.

Whats very interesting about Begins/Dark Knight is that while VERY different from the 60's camp/80's goth/and the 90's .... i dont KNOW what the fuck that was... It IS a throwback to the original Bob Kain characters themselves, with a somewhat modern addition of the gadgets which showed up later.

The Joker of this film is very much a derivative of the pre-comic code era Joker, who was psychotic, and nasty, and not at all funny or cute that any of the later reinterpretations brought to him. The "joke" of the 30's Joker was he was laughing at you dying... he found it funny... not that he made a gag to kill you.
