It does brilliantly with XP, and I have the 4G model. Even better, with Windows installed to the Eee's correct resolution, everything's tailor made (sized) to the Eee's screen.

I used nLite and got a 700MB XP installation, and I have 2.4 GB on the main drive free, and 3.3 GB on my 4GB SDHC card. In summary, I have installed XP, all the apps I need, and still have tons of storage space. Everything runs perfectly, and boot times are pretty close to what they were with the original Xandros OS.

Eee's ship with all needed XP drivers on the accompanying CD.

No downside whatsoever.

@mwalker05: that's why i said 'might just pay' for $1000, cause it'd be a steal...it'll be 4 years before that is a reasonable price at least. i also said the eee was not for me, i know it is a niche market, and great in that market...i am not that niche.

@EMoShunz: considering a 64gb ssd costs $1600 just in itself, i would guestimate that apple would charge you around $3000 for their final product. have fun with that one.
the point of the eeepc is that it is small and light, not that its a powerhouse computing machine. oh, and vista ultimate is $250. but heck, who needs to be accurate

@TheCapt: for $1000 i might just pay...provided the ssd was 64gb+ and 2gb+ ram.
heck, i am not so much an apple hardware fanboy (pretty and reliable as it is), but i sure as hell love the os, i use linux, bsd, xp, but none come close to os x. what does vista ultimate full versio cost new, maybe $400? i'd happily pay that for os x to be able to install it on every pc i own (but i would also expect a $600 version that comes with ilife and a 'family' license).

Eee does well on XP. Not the fastest on earth but decent. Basically faster than any P4M notebook ever and suitable for light to medium duty tasks. You won't be doing Photoshop or gaming on it tho... and the display is REALLY too low rez for XP. Remember the Vaio Picturebook? 1280x600 in an 8.9" display would be PERRRRRRRRRRRRRRFECT. I happen to have 3 of those LCDs... if anyone wants to try hacking their Eee and can show proof of ability (ergo, other mods of similar difficulty), the screens are yours. I just wanna see it done!

I'd mock matt's photoshop skills, but I probably couldn't do much better.

with the eee, it couldn't detect my canon connected via usb (only when I put the SD card in a reader). is there something I missed?
