fact is thesupport is patchy .. burn an xvid 1.1.0 beta 2 file to cd-r and the data type is unsupported.. no matter what you all say this should work in a there abouts £400 entertainment system ,,, sony for gods sake sort it out... and while your at the xvid support get firefox in there as a default browser instead of the pice of c--rap you've got there and a decent control ui for the movies .. trust the community they tell you no lies ... if you had included all this to start with you would have sold a hell of a lot more consoles than you have..!

dodyryda

I thought the whole point of the update was to have the capability to play the files without having to use programs such as TVersity? I haven't tried it from an external drive, but that would be ridiculous to go out and buy another drive to "stream" video.

By the way, I have WHS, PS3 states the file is unsupported. Sony needs to get their shit straight, I don't want to install 3rd party apps just to stream video. Guess I'll just use my 360.

nok610

""Playback controls are gimpy. This isn't the fault of the new DivX support, but of the way the PS3 handles all video playback. It's usable, but it's not as polished as the Xbox's (which wasn't all that great to begin with.) UI isn't Sony's strong suit."

You've got to be kidding. PS3s UI is worlds ahead of 360s.
1) Animated thumbnails and album art (unavailable on 360)
2) Sorting and grouping options (unavailable on 360)
3) You can set the name of the album yourself (unavailable on 360)
4) You can use the buttons for seeking/next tracks/etc, a feature only added to 360 a week ago. PS3 and PSP had this since launch
5) PS3s on-screen menu while in-music/video is like 4 lines deep. 360's has only one line of options. PS3s supports every option on the remote. 360s is pretty bare boned
6) When you have a file selected and press X/A
On PS3: It plays the file.
On 360: It opens a menu with play as an option, as well as delete. (though MS added the ability to press start to play a movie last week)
7) If you press triangle you can copy/delete files en mass. This can't be done on 360 as it does not let you copy files to/from anything. 360 doesn't even let you rename stuff. PS3 can copy off of USB devices, flash cards, optical discs, and even UPnP servers (the same thing 360 supports, which also doesn't support SMB shares)
8) 360 forces you to rip music from audio CDs. And doesn't even let you chose the codec/bitrate like PS3 does.
9) PS3 downloads track listing, and lets you upload your own. 360 wastes space on the harddrive with a local database.
10)
[gizmodo.com]
[gizmodo.com]"

After testing all methods for DLNA, I am surprised to find the the BEST way to get divx/xvid into the PS3 seems to be a little program called Mediatomb. I share most of my files from a linux box anyway, so it was a 10minute install, and added 2 extra lines to the config to map avi and divx files to the mimetype video/divx...PS3 has played every divx file I could throw at it so far and all of them are detected perfectly!!!

I highly recommend this method for those who run linux stuff. It has supprot for calling external links and off box items as well. Works like a charm... [www.mediatomb.cc]

helfrez

The codec playback seems to be exactly the same as my 360 (since neither support Divx 3.11), personally I prefer to use the ps3 for watching media since its dead quiet compared to my Airbus 360.

Scaramanga

Be careful buying NAS devices guys, not all dlna NAS devices will work with the PS3, some ae just funked up like my HP MediaVault. I had to install twonkymedia on it to get the ps3 to work, which is now broken because the current version of twonky doesnt appear to work with the new firmware.....grrrr...

Sadly the most reliable streaming for me appears to come from WMP11, and being that i run linux 95% of the time, that's not a very good solution. Cant get any of the other progs like ushare to work either.

helfrez

Also, I don't understand why you would want to use TVersity if transcoding is unnecessary... The WMP11 library is a lot easier to use imho. Clearly if WMP isn't working for you for some reason then it does make sense to use whatever works.

jiffy

Ok guys here is more funky stuff. I just tried a multichannel audio xvid file. Good news is that I get the 5.1 output. Here is the strange part. I'm not sure if it's because of the update but I only get the 2 rear channels if I enable rear speaker surround.

I have a 7.1 capable receiver but I don't have the other 2 rear speakers to make it a 7. system. If on my receiver I enable the rear surround speakers (even though I don't have any), then the sound comes out of my surround speakers O_o. SOOo I have to enable 7.1 sound to get 5.1...... O_o

Fortunately, this strange behavior only happens with Xvid/Divx playback.

radikaled

Another advantage of the xbox is that they've listed what their video player is capable of on their site. An obvious disadvantage is how limited that list actually is. Yes, i love playing back divx/xvid on the xbox, but some of the limitations confuse me. For example (and i'm not double checking this, so feel free to prove me wrong with a link to the infamous FAQ), the xbox can play 5.1 channel sound in an xvid/divx file, but only two channel from h.264.

Also, all these media playback features only work from the xbox dashboard, not the media center extender interface.

thefastest

I was able to stream Xvid's to my PS3 last night from my Vista machine without copying anything local. I had to allow my PS3 access to share files on my Vista machine but once that was done, They showed up on the PS3. I had one file say "unsupported" but tried it again and it played fine. It does take a good 20 seconds for the files to start playing but once they do, they look great. It looks like the PS3 is upscaling them or something because I saw very little to no macro-blocking at all.

JohnDeLuca

Check out this info I found in the Playstation Media Forum. Might be helpful for you guys figuring things out:

I just made a very important discovery in relation to XVID playback!
Here I have two IDENTICALLY encoded videos except for one thing...
Here are the FFMPEG outputs....
This one doesn't play...
Duration: 01:51:07.1, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 883 kb/s
Stream #0.0: Video: mpeg4, yuv420p, 664x274, 23.98 fps(r)
Stream #0.1: Audio: mp3, 48000 Hz, stereo, 112 kb/s
This one does...
Duration: 00:24:09.4, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 983 kb/s
Stream #0.0: Video: mpeg4, yuv420p, 704x400, 23.98 fps(r)
Stream #0.1: Audio: mp3, 48000 Hz, stereo, 32 kb/s
So.. what difference causes it not to play? (BTW these are both recent XVID videos)

VIDEOS THAT HAVE RESOLUTIONS THAT ARE NOT DIVISIBLE BY 16 DO NOT PLAY. the first video has a resolution that is not a multiple of 16, the second one is based on a multiple of 16, so it does play. XVID FTW.

So, for XVID (and probably DIVX too) their are as of now at least 2 requirements:
Resolution MUST be a multiple of 16
Must be encoded in a RECENT version of XVID or DIVX (probably DIVX 4/5 and up and the associated XVID version)
Other possible requirements: MP3 audio and AVI container (is the fourcc even recognized by the PS3?)

metalhaze

Works great on my PS3 on everything but a couple of odd xvid files.

I'm off to the local electronics store to buy an external NAS drive with USB. I'm going to hook up both the network and the USB.

Then, I'll download content from uTorrent and save that on the external drive so that my PS3 has access to it. I won't have to re-encode or transfer ever again. I can't tell you how happy this makes me.

DaveTyranham
