How do I vote more than once? I have about 5 computers that have all been to Gizmodo at one time or another. Seems to me that's 5 pc's to someone else's single pc or mac. Work, home, parents house, library, etc. Usually it's a PC.

Why would someone using a PC for twenty some odd years not learn how to use a Windows PC. Sounds like you will have a problem with the Macs in the next twenty years

I tried, I really and truly tried. I still try. Yet OSX's virtues continue to evade me. Windows XP Pro still works great for anything I do and is solid as a rock. Ubuntu gets to be on one of my old machines because messing around with the UI is an interesting option you don't get with MS or Mac.

OSX doesn't really seem to do anything better or faster than XP to me. It's really pretty though and dashboard is pretty cool, but I found myself using it less and less.

Vista? Unless the 64bit version (Ultimate?) comes down to affordable levels or preloaded in a decent machine...count me out.

I play on both machines. They both have their strengths. At work I run a Dual 2Ghz G5. At home I run a Vista full media center PC with cable card in my living room, a 2004 HP XP Media Center in my computer room sitting right next to a Dual 1Ghz G4 Mac plus a "Legacy" XP machine in my basement for music. PCs and Macs don't have to fight. In my life the co-exist quite happily. If I was forced to pick one I'd have a really hard time.

I use both currently.

I usa an imac for web design, flash and photoshop. I haven't upgraded to leopard yet but maybe in Jan when the update comes out.

I then use my PC which I built a few years back for gaming and music listening to. It's running Win XP Pro.

I dual-boot XP and Tiger on my Panasonic laptop. Couldn't be happier- I get the lovely experience of Mac OS X most of the time and Windows for those occasions when I need to do some Windows-only thing (stupid Taito, make your games cross-platform, dammit!).

And to those of you who tell me to get a real Mac already- drop a Toughbook and a Macbook on the floor. Which one will survive? Experience has taught me that it's not the Macbook.

I don't usually post, but just wanted to get my 2 cents out. I have nothing against Mac (but am a PC only user) as they make good products, but I don't understand this obsession with Mac and Jobs, and belief that they can do no wrong. As I see it, they are just another company. Leopard is problematic, Safari has been compromised, and the company is just as vile and vindictive as anyone else, probably more so (threatening letters to 9-year-olds, mocking mud-slinging commercials, and now they sued Thick Secret out of existence). Pa-sha... I say Pa-sha!!!

I use a dell attitude (I scratched out the "L"...I know, I'm cool) which had Windows on it until it blue screened on me. Now I'm booting Ubuntu with a Vista/Aqua theme. My desktop has XP on it which I just had to reinstall...I wish I had a Mac.

OSs with browsers that give Haiku error messages kick ass.
BeOS kicks ass. (If only people knew what multithreading was 15 years ago.)

I'm just a lowly Ubuntu user on a quad core with 8GB of RAM. (Worth every penny.) I even run my old XP install as a virtual machine.

Got the Wiimote changing channels through the Core 2 XP MCE laptop.

And, as much as I like Leopard's BSD roots, I don't believe in paying too much for hardware, so no Apple hardware. (It is overpriced, no matter what any of the fanboys tell you.)

I only use the W2K touchscreen subnotebook for porn. (Yes, the screen is sticky) And, I still have 95, 98, 2k, BeOS, FreeBSD, and an extra Ubuntu box sitting here. It feels like a graveyard.

Wouldn't mind adding Maemo to the mix, Santa. (N810, w00t.)

When Macs do not cost 3-6 times MORE than they need to for far far LESS computer then just maybe I might consider a mac. ITs not the computer or the company or the operating system that I have a problem with.

ITs the PRICE and features you get for that price. I can build a PC with twice the features and goodies for 1/5th the cost of a mac. Until this changes I will never be a mac person.

I guess if you can afford to dump cash into a computer it does not matter. For those less fortunate among us not to be rich I will stick with my PC's

As much as I dislike Windows for all the crap you'll find on the harddisk after 2 hours of use, a lot of vital work-related software is only released for the Microsoft product. Hence, I have it running under Parallels Desktop on my MacBook.

I have a Linux machine standing at home, which does most of the day-to-day work and seconds as a multimedia center for music and movies.

I'm currently considering building a Hackintosh from scratch.

The sitemeter argument is pretty flawed. A poll is actually much more accurate, since it asks what someone personally uses. How are the mac users somehow more vocal in a poll then the PC users? Are you saying that PC users will refuse to submit an answer to the poll?

Plus, I'm sure plenty of people browse Giz from work as well, even if they have a Mac at home, and they're more likely to be on a Windows box at work.

I use Windows XP.

I use the Macs at school when I get a chance, but they simply don't feel as comfortable to me as a computer running XP would. I've used XP at home for my entire life and I simply know my way around town. Plus, factor in the facts that viruses rarely cause me any problem and that my comp never has crashed on me (except when I, myself, stupidly screwed around with my drivers), XP treats me well.

I want a Mac though just for the hell of it. I don't really have any necessity for it. First thing I would do is run Boot Camp.

This, however, is also flawed. As the enormous rift between the sitemeter stats and the poll results show, there is a serious disparity here. One reason for this is the item I mentioned earlier; Mac users are more vocal about their choice of computers.

So REALLY, this poll would more accurately be titled "Do our actively posting and vocal members use Mac or PC?"

But that completely pooches the purpose of the poll to begin with, and flys in the face of the fact that they have sitemeter stat gathering and HAVE had it for some time.

So, why the poll you ask? The same reason they have the Mac commercial there: this is editorialized advertising. They are being paid to "astroturf" for Apple. Not that I blame them (much). Banner ad revenue isn't going to keep the lights on by itself, especially with people like myself using firefox plugins like Adblock Plus.

Remember, this is still a commercial venture. Much like the poll results don't reliably reflect the actual readership, the articles may not reflect actual news.

Running Ubuntu on my laptop right now, and I occasionally boot it into XP (mostly for GPS stuff). Until I had a hardware fault that killed it, I ran XP primarily on my desktop, but now it only boots into Ubuntu (I can't even try a repair to windows, the hardware's that far gone).

Also, I have a Mac Mini that I use on a regular basis. So, I use all 3, on a varying basis. I almost always use XP at school/work, as their Linux installation isn't all that good, and the art peoples use the Macs too much.

i use linux of a few flavors, various microsoft os's, and OS X. who give a crap what hardware it's on.

for my needs, i find OS X annoying and in need of being stabbed in the face, but it looks ok.

XP is for gaming, Server 2003 for .. well guess - serving. Vista? not interested. wake me up when something moe barebones, but modern comes out.

Linux is getting my attention more and more. i used to use it simply at the command line for server uses, but now i prefer it for day-to-day. i don't recommend it "out of the box" for grandma, but i don't recommend any computer for that - they aren't applicances.

The key, and I mean KEY, to statistics like this poll is to realize that Windows' 94% market share or whatever it is applies to BOXES, not USERS. They're old computers sitting in basements, old libraries, old schools, bot farms, etc.

Active computer users who surf the internet (the population we are dealing with here with this poll) is a FAR different statistic, and for my money, a more accurate reflection of computer "use".

wow, i'm not even going to read these fast expanding comments, and i don't expect mine to be read. you were asking for trouble with this post. btw, i use os x at home primarily, as well as bsd and linux boxes with kde. i use xp at work, and occasionally in a vm on my linux box.

I think the 50/50 split we're seeing in the poll versus the actual sitemeter results is due to one thing (Dons flameproof suit) Fanboyism.

Now calm down, calm down... what I'm saying is that Mac users, as the minority, tend to band together and be more vocal than PC users. Ask 100 Apple users what kind of computer they have, and almost all of them will enthusiastically spring up with "I use a MAC!" then go on to tell you all about their hardware and version of OS and all that. Ask 100 PC users what kind of computer they use, and most will apathetically mumble something like "Some old POS from Dell" or tell you a little about their home built rig. Most PC users aren't fanboyish enough to gush about their rigs, and won't participate in the survey.

Much more accurate results can be had from their [www.sitemeter.com] stats, which actually show 63% WinXP, 20% Mac, and 6% Vista, with the remainder being various other windows versions and *nix variants.

Just my $0.02, flame on.

Sitemeter says that a little over 3/4 visitors are on Windows NT and friends (NT, 2000, XP, Vista), and about 1/5 are on OS X.

So there's a pretty big difference there. Does anyone how many users that saw the poll voted? Does anyone know how many users are commenters?

I think it's funny that people always think this is a race for leadership. Apple's got the perfect spot where they are right now, at least when it comes to personal computing. Macs are expensive and Mac users pay Apple's prices, because they can afford it or because they want it sooo badly. Apple makes high margins and they don't have any competition in their own field - the only computers built for Mac OS are Apple's own (except some Hackintoshs that will forever be just nerdy toys). If they would come even closely to PC-like market share, there sure as hell would be Mac-compatible machines with which they would have to cope. Macs are just not for everybody, which is why Apple's tactic is working so great.

I pretty much only use pcs with either xp or linux. On this machine (a qosmio) there are some driver issues in linux, so i use xp. I do use linux on it now and again though.

I try and move to linux, and have started to research how good a laptop or pc will play with linux before purchase.

Both Microsoft and Apple disgust me, apple more than microsoft.

I use both; right next to each other. When the time came to replace my 4 year old HP Pavilion desktop, I went with a MacPro. But since some of the software I use is PC only, I just use both. I have them both set up on my desk with side-by-side monitors.

Of course the trouble comes in that I have two keyboards, and two mice...I should just partition the Mac HD and dual-boot but I'm lazy...

To be fair, PCs have a huge back catalog of legacy viruses, worms and trojans. It would take Mac decades to catch up to the security vulnerabilities of Microsoft's OS.

Lets, see. One 10.5 laptop, a 10.4 server G5 tower. 1 freebsd machine, two linux desktops, one linux laptop, 2 Xp desktops, and a Xp laptop. Oh, and two linux handhelds. At work I have a 10.5 laptop, a 10.5 desktop and an Xp desktop. I pretty much use whatever gets the job done.

Actually, what it says is that Mac OS X has a higher market penetration with geeks than with your grandparents. Just because Mac has a 6% worldwide market share doesn't mean that this 6% share will show up in every demographic. The average person uses a PC, sure. But Mac users tend to be nerds or hipsters, and aren't those just the kinds of people who read and comment on tech blogs?

Although I guess I would also try and make crappy comments about the competition if I was using a system as crappy as Vista. My brother-in-law just bought two vista machines. A laptop and a desktop. I have a PC at work and a 933MHz G4 (Leopard 10.5) tower at home. I'm starting to love Mac more and more, but I respect MS for expending the effort to get Windows working with so many hardware configurations. Seriously, the reason MS couldn't have a Boot Camp (even if Apple allowed it) is because OS X can only handle Apple's limited hardware configurations.
...and I also love games.

For my personal life I use a Mac. At work I use my personal Mac and a few dozen Windows workstations and a few JAVA based servers. At the end of the day, I really don't care what OS it runs, as long as it works.

For media editing I love my Mac. I yanked the optical drive and installed a second HD it works great.

As for security flaws, theoretical exploits vs. actual exploits. I would love for somebody to do the research and figure out what OS is more secure. I love how for ages people throw out that OS X is less secure, but I have had no security problems with it, on the other hand, at least one of my co-workers a year shuts down the entire network with a virus (network shutdown used as way to prevent further infections). That's with all of the required firewalls, AV, etc.. I would love a un-biased review of security showing the difference between the reality of security and the hypothetical flaws.

HAHA YES almost neck and neck, man... at my jr high and high school all they had were Mac (private school brat I am,) I've been using them since 1994 and have been in love since lol. PC will go the way of the dodo. I have never needed a PC and never will. The past 14-15 years since I have been using a computer (I am 24) I have never needed anything other then a Mac. Apple you did it and you always will. I would not give up my Mac Pro or G4 for anything else!

At work we have a bit of everything. But Mac's are more of an end user type machine then admin machine, so we dont get alot of MAC time. I've used a PC since DOS 1.0 and still need to use a PC daily for work, but since switching to the Mac a year ago, I've wondered why anyone would choose to use a PC over the Mac. Windows is so badly designed and so hard to use that I swear I waste an hour a day just dealing with Windows design flaws.

@Lizard_King: I completely agree. My family used PC's for years, until we started using Macs. The most we switch off buying PC's and macs, each getting replaced by one of the opposite OS. The family laptop is a PC while the desktop it an iMac. The oldest computers are disassembled as science projects or turned into Linux boxes as backups if a computer dies and for experimentation.

My Mac is pretty good. But my 6 year-old Dell is pretty damn good too. I use whatever gets the job done the best for the least amount of money. I still prefer Office XP to Office Mac. And Firefox' glitchiness and instability on Mac has made me switch to Safari.

Soon I'll have even more choice. I'm getting a 6 month-old hand-me-down 12" Toshiba (running XP) from my mom, who I think is seriously considering having "eeePC" tattooed on her.

Mac or PC? but for what?. In this times of cross plataform and since mac adopted Intel processors, is a os question more than hardware. vista at work. xp and vista at home, and 10.5 and xp on laptop. what do I use?
