I'd like to know what the f*** you people are talking about! I have the 3-at-a-time, unlimited mailings subscription from Blockbuster online.

I'm paying $19.99 a month for it.

I get two coupons a month for free in-store rentals, plus I can take a mailer back to a store and get a free movie right then and there in addtion to whatever will be mailed to be from my returned movie. So I get TWO movies for returning one movie to them!

When I mail a movie back to them, 90% of the time the mail my next movie to me the NEXT DAY, and I get it the DAY AFTER THAT! So - return a movie on Monday, get the next one on Wednesday.

Match THAT, NetFlix!

Limited selection? I have over 600 movies in my Blockbuster queue! Maybe when I run out of those, I'll see if NetFlix has anything I want!

Bottom line - Blockbuster online is a MUCH better deal than NetFlix!

Stoshie

It is just as bad or worse for the smaller Blockbuster accounts. I started with a 5.99 /mo subscription with 2 mailed movies, 2 store exchanges, and 2 emailed coupons for free movies or games each month. That's six bucks for 6 rentals, a bargain. First thing they did in the summer was raise the price to 7.99/mo and take away one coupon. In the fall, the other coupon was deleted. Now they are raising this plan to 9.99/mo for 2 mailed movies and 2 in store exchanges. So they have increased their charges by 59% for this plan, while decreasing service by 33% I don't know about anyone else, but if my production at work decreased by 33% I certainly wouldn't be rewarded with a 59% salary increase.

MisTrE

This is a very poor business decision on the part of Blockbuster Online. I foresee quite a drop in their customer base in the near future.

It is a shame that most corporation are still more concerned about making MORE $$$ than staying true to their loyal customers..

While it is Blockbusters right to raise prices, it is also our right as customers to take our business to their competitors if we see fit.

Crashdown1979

Here was Blockbuster's response to the nasty email I sent:

Hello Richard,

Thanks for contacting BLOCKBUSTER Online Customer Care.

I appreciate you taking the time to notify us of your concern. However, we believe you'll agree that Total Access Premium provides an enormous value that comes from unlimited rentals and in-store exchanges, and we're adjusting our pricing accordingly, Richard The price adjustment enables us to bring our online subscription plans more in line with our in-store subscription pricing and strikes the right balance between providing great value to our subscribers and getting a fair return for the company and our shareholders.

Meanwhile, please note that we're not changing any plan benefits; you'll continue to get all the same great benefits and value from Total Access. With the variety of rental plans we now have in place, you'll have a lot of choices available, should you decide you want to move to a different plan type.

I appreciate your patience and understanding with this matter.

Ive had 2 increases within the last 2 months and have lost my 2 free e-coupons. My plan will increase to the max. dollar amount per month. We've made full use through the years of their plan. I,m curious how they can pick and choose who they decide to increase. Their plans are based on a monthly plan not on how many rentals made through your tenure with them. I would think they would need to be fair and consistant. This seems to be some kind of legal issue here. @karmaghost:

snp money

if its because postage went up, then fine thats cool, just tell us that.

since they have no explanation, it just seems like the CEO is getting greedy for the holidays which makes them look really bad.

This is why I along with many other customers are switching to netflix. Blockbuster should refine their marketing team because they just lost their company a lot of money, good goin.

esubi81

No hate for BB from me either. I've had the 3-plan for about the last year and I've used the heck out of it. 2-3 day turn-around usually. I've had them lose disks on the way to me, a couple clicks on the website and a new disk is on its way. Never had a return problem either. I don't use the in-store return so we'll see what happens. Best of all, I'm doing this at a 25% off for the year thanks to Amex Wish List from last year. Netflix can't top that.

dalejo

Ok lets get the facts straight first...Blockbuster's "Blockbuster by Mail" service which has no in store exchanges just movies through the mail (the exact same as Netflix) as of now is the EXACT same price as Netflix's. I'm also pretty sure that the "Blockbuster by Mail" service is getting no price increase. If you want a chance to get a couple extra movies in between the one in the mail then pay the little extra. If not switch to "Blockbuster by Mail" or Netflix for that matter, but don't accuse Blockbuster of charging more than Netflix.

TheThurmanator

It seems I'm in the same boat as J.T. I really can't hate Blockbuster that much since they haven't gotten around to royally screwing me yet. Sure, my plan went up to $20/month, but I still seem to be able to exchange an unlimited number of movies at my nearby brick and mortar BB each month, which is a huge factor for me. Not to mention, the game rental coupon is worth $9 in itself - 1/2 the value of what I'm paying for the plan.

Grr...Argh...

@itchytooth: Don't bitch. I have 3 out, with NO coupons for $24.99, which I've been paying since September after they whoops didn't send me DVD's for two weeks, then still made me pay for those two weeks.

I just wrote a NASTY email to Blockbuster, and sent it to every customer service agent's email that I had in my email from all the problems I've had. Even if it doesn't make it's way into any hands that will care or do anything, I've said my peace, and will cancel my account this weekend. Like I said before, fuck it. I've paid $25 a month for 6 months, and have at least 200 dvd's that I've rented. So, it's been worth it. But no more.
I sent an email to Blockbuster and complained about this earlier and the first thing in the response was them stating that they are not changing any of the benefits of the plan. I then responded back with a correction to that statement that even though they are not lowering them now in the past year they have reduced the benefits on two different occasions. I'm curious to see how they respond. My account doesn't renew until the 14th so I'm going to hold on til then just because I want to get my money's worth but then its off to Netflix I go!

Lanthom

@TomLB: The plan I'm at is the same price at BB as it is on NF. So what's the difference? Well before BB had the added value (in-store exchanges, monthly coupon). They took those away and raised the rates twice this year.

I created a new NF account and canceled my BB account this morning. Why? Because NF now has the added value (downloaded movies) and they have better inventory. 95% of my queue in BB was delayed - nothing was available. I added all those same movies to my new NF account and the only one that is delayed is the Simpsons Movie, and it just says a "short wait". I'm looking forward to getting my movies with NF instead of waiting weeks with BB.

BB keeps closing stores, and raising their online service rates... they'll be going out of business in '08. Long live the original online rental company... Netflix!

zombo

@Nick Bourbaki: I'm another person whose rate was grandfathered. I've only been with Blockbuster for a year, but my plan only jumped $2 from below:

BLOCKBUSTER Total Access Premium
$17.99 / month (plus taxes)
3 at-a-time, unlimited mailings
unlimited in-store movie exchanges
+1 FREE bonus Movie or Game Rental E-Coupon / Month

I've loved the Blockbuster plan, and the ability to trade in at stores is the key reason why I stick with them. It satisfies my "instant gratification" need, after all, and my local store is just a few blocks down on Market Street here in San Francisco.

Shame on you long-term users who did the knee-jerk cancellations without finding out how their specific rate was affected. As for anyone who jumped to $34.99... Yeah. In your dreams, Blockbuster.

J.T.

I have nothing positive to say about Blockbuster; two stores by me have closed, 100% deterring me from switching to Blockbuster in lieu of Netflix (something I actually had considered). Netflix doesn't raise rates, and are extremely positive when there is a problem, your fault of theirs. Keep up the good work Netflix.

G for GRENADE

I had been happily with Netflix for 2 years until I heard about unlimited in-store exchanges and a free game every month from Blockbuster. I switched over and really enjoyed the service and the flexibility I got, plus I was getting to rent 4-5 dvds a week for 8.99! When they cancelled the unlimited exchanges down to 2 a month and got rid of the game, I almost left, but stayed because the price was the same as Netflix. Now with this, I switched back today and look forward to using Netflix again. Blockbuster is truly shooting themselves in the foot!

geeksquaddave

This is the second price hike this year. When I got the last one I lowered my plan but now that plan was just jacked up $2/mo. Yeah, it's only $2/mo but this is the 2nd price hike in a year.

The only reason why I changed to BB from Netflix was because their pricing became competitive, plus they added benefits (in-store exchanges, monthly coupon for game or movie). Now those benefits are gone, so why stick around for a service that is sub-par to Netflix?

I've canceled my BB account and am now back with Netflix, because at least they now have added value over BB (ability to watch movies online).

BB is really shooting themselves in the foot on this one... it's a sign that they are struggling. Merry Christmas, dipshits... may Santa fill your stockings with a bankruptcy notice.

zombo

In Theory with that plan one had the ability to place the 3 mail rentals into 3 computers and in about 25mins the movies were backed up. Then one could cruise down to the store and pick up 3 more (movies from que would ship) back those up and then rinse and repeat.

They did away with that plan after the first price hike and the free game coupon. I could deal with that but this second price hike is just rubbish.

Netflix sucks ass and here's why.

2 years ago Netflix kept sending me broken DVD's. And it wasn't just occasionally random, it was often. A couple times I received a title I wanted, broken several times. I had ordered a disc from the Looney Tunes Golden Collection. I received the disc broken, 8 times in a row. That's right. 8 times. I even sent the 7th broken disc to the CEO of Netflix, with no reply.

I couldn't even fathom how the same exact title could arrive at my house broken 8 times, so I figured they weren't even checking the disc and just sending it back out to me. Or, for some reason they were breaking the disc on purpose to throttle me. Whatever conspiracy you want. They told me it was the post office. I told Netflix, that unless the Post Office has X-Ray vision, how do they know which title to break 8 times in a row? I was paying for 3 discs at a time, but with all the broken discs, it only turned out to be 2 discs at a time, and demanded a refund of the difference. I got so tired of doing this, I switched to Blockbuster.

In the one year I've had Blockbuster, I've only received one broken disc. Hmmmm. Now either the post office hates Netflix and likes Blockbuster, or Netflix employees are as incompetent as McDonald's employees.

bdkennedy1

Question:

I've had Netflix for a long time and love it. They have a very robust catalogue. They have this deep catalogue because they don't have the limited shelf space of a brick and mortar store, and can keep a handful of copies of a rare film and send them anywhaere in the country when the rare rental happens.

I'm wondering if Blockbuster's catalogue is as large and diverse? Not that I would switch with these prices. but I'm curious if they're even trying to compete on that end of things, since their B&M stores never had much except current hits.

Zlevee

Trust me, you will get an email about a price increase. 2) the price increase DOES NOT take effect immediately. It takes effect on your next billing cycle. So your current account will still have the original monthly price. Just be sure to cancel before the next month, because they don't do partial refunds. I received the email last night, and while I haven't canceled yet, I will before the end of the year. But now, here i go again, trying 2 calm down. When i complained on the 1st $ incrs + w no more free coupon, the mgr at the BB i go to told me there is a new CEO and he does not like the online rentals. Whatever, i'm going to cancel my acct, after years of being a BB member, and start going to Redbox for $1 a movie.

debchic

You mean there are (were) still folks getting unlimited store returns and a coupon at $17.99? I feel even more abused.

I am in the same place as A9108. I have:
BLOCKBUSTER Total Access Premium
$17.99 / month (plus taxes)
3 at-a-time, unlimited mailings
unlimited in-store movie exchanges
+2 FREE bonus Movie or Game Rental E-Coupon / Month

This works out great for me, because with in store exchanges, I watch about 10 movies a month (I rip some to my Archos to watch while out and about) and I rent two games a month (this would cost $16 by itself).

This is ridiculous. I have been with Blockbuster Online for several years and in the past year, I have had my free in-store game rental coupons taken away, my price increased several times, and the number of in-store rentals limited. This is the last straw. I am printing out my queue and switching to Netflix.

godukebasketball

Didn't Blockbuster already lose the online fight with Netflix?

Obviously they aren't trying to attract new customers with this change - perhaps they're just attempting to milk the current ones.

That 40% increase is nuts.

bitfactory

Always have loved me my Netflix... we stopped using netflix for about 3 months and realized it was WAY better than going to the store to pick up DVDs. Since we joined (and rejoined), our prices have only gone down, service has always been good (granted, I'm in a city with a distro center), and we've only had problems with 2-3 DVDs, which were promptly replaced.

And while the WatchNow features only a limited number of films, it's a great option when I'm traveling.

Great business model, great business. I plan to stay on as a Netflix customer while I watch all the Blockbuster stores turn into coffee shops.

zanella

Ha, this is pretty rich coming from the consumer. Why go with a company that charges extra overall and then charges extra for additional services..? Personally I'm all for Netflix.. I get free Online viewing (48hrs.) and if there is a problem I call them up and boom, they compensate for it.
With Blockbuster if a disk is lost or you never recieve it you get charged for the disk. Which really makes no sense.
Besides the point Blockbuster really is going down, the franchises our sueing the company for making them participate in the "promotion of the online rentals" when the franchises themselves can't take the returns nor capitilize on the $5 restocking fee if you're not a premium member.
Netflix ftw.

thespida

I canceled my Netflix about a year ago when I found we were getting lazy with returning the movies. We would then just go to the B&M stores and rent something. So I figured I would get the Blockbuster online account, and return the movies back at the store and choose a new one. It also left an option open for games.

Some problems with that. If I sent the movies back, it would take 4-5 days for a new movie to be sent. Turnaround was 8 days instead of Netflix's 3. If I took the movie back, I would often get the next movie on my list put into shipping BEFORE I got home - OFTEN the same movie I had just rented (they have since corrected this). The game rental I never took advantage of - you need a credit card to rent games, a debit card is not good enough. When I bought my house, I ditched the credit cards - it's something that works WELL for me. I can rent a car with the Debit card, but can't rent a game - great business. (this part was added AFTER I joined Blockbuster)

Netflix gladly welcomed me back, sent me a $20 gift certificate for some gourmet popcorn or something, and has been shipping me movies the first week they are out consistently.

You really can't feel bad about companies putting themselves out of business.

Lizard_King

I dropped them after they raised the price the first time, after that i switched to netflix. I have the 4 disc at once plan and rarely do i really take advantage of it. I guess they dont understand that if they rise the price people are either going to take cancel there account or take more advantage of there plans. By raising the price, i see it that people are going to the extreme with there plans. which will cost BB more money to ship and receive.

Totalfixation

@ KARMAGHOST: YES they do = FAIL. I blew up when I got the email from Blockbuster last night. I switched from Netflix to blockbuster because I wanted to exchange my DVD's faster. When I was on Netflix I had the 8 DVD at a time plan and was paying $50 a month. I was ecstatic when I switched to Blockbuster because at the time I had the 4 at a time with unlimited in store exchanges for $25 a month. Then they canceled that plan and didn't grandfather people and now this. I guess they want all of their old customers to leave, which I will be doing as my subscription is up on the 27th. I can understand raising the price for people who are new or switch plans, but not for customers who have been with them for over 2+ years.

bassiiabc
