Well, sorry to all the apple fans but I recenty purchased the XPS One and I'll tell you, it smokes my 20" imac. This truly is a great machine. I sold my imac today and don't think I'll ever go back. There are just to many options that mac doesn't offer. As far as the price, heck I paid 1,900 for the imac a year ago with way less features.

If Apple would fix the screen on the iMac I would buy one today. The problems are it's glossy, but not just glossy it's supper glossy. It's like looking at a mirror. The colors are off too. Since I can't afford a Mac Pro I have no choices at Apple for a desktop that can handle what I need, and a Macbook Pro is also about $1000 to much for me.

What is he walking about! That thing is an eyesore! When people buy a Mac they arent just buying a computer in a case. Its like buying a lamborghini versus a mustang, when you really want style and class you buy the lamborghini, when you dont have enough money for it, you buy a mustang.

I've seen the XPS, the design is horrible, its ugly and uninspired! This is shameful considering that most of dell's designs before this weren't so clunky and ugly.

The imac is a great machine, and i'd preffer it. I like the new thinner design, but no the silver/black. i liked the white ones better.
lastly, this guy does do this thing like if he was 12 yrs old. He's suppose to be a tech guy? I guess he's targeted to people who dont know absolutely anything about technology.

it doesnt matter how good the hardware is. it runs Vista. i havent dealt with a more unfriendly, cranky, and painful OS since WindowsME. id rather take a disk sander to my elbow than work with Vista.

I've had crashes, had to disable all those dialog boxes asking me if i was sure i wanted to do something, and went back to a restore point at least 4 times. i no longer do updates without doing restore points as too often, MS has crippled my system.

last week i ordered a Mac with Leopard and a Superdrive. the Gateway/Vista laptop will be on ebay this weekend.

Vista is junk, we all know it, and we put up with it. well, some of us do, but i wont after this weekend. i KNOW macs arent perfect, but ive had enough of Vista, and cant stand Linux.

Mac is the best alternative--hands down--for my uses.

IMHO they both suck "XP and Leopard" and I hope that in the near future that we as a race can develop an OS that makes us proud instead of embarrassed. If these two operating systems are all that we can come up with in the last 50 years or so that we are failing miserably and need to reevaluate our thinking. About a year ago, my not-so-techic friend asked for advise on what machine to get. I told him to get a MacBook, but of course, he got a Sony laptop for the same price. Since then, not counting the phone calls, without exceptions, every other month, he had took his machine to my house for help: windows crashes, spyware, driver issue, DVD not playing nice, unexplained freezes. He's not using his laptop any more because I got tired of fixing it and he got tired of bring it over.

I use a 15" MacBook Pro :)

By the way, the day we hook our all mac network up to our big corporation whom purchased us, we got our first virus warn about the infected Windows systems that other part of corporation was using. This is the first computer virus alert in our seven-year company history.

Macs aren't all fashion. After seeing about 30 electronic bands perform live I've only seen one or two of them using a Windows laptop. All the rest were using Apple powerbooks or Macbook pros.

There's a reason Apple doesn't put card readers on the device. In the lifespan of a laptop new formats come and go. Having 5 slots for various cards and then not having the slot for the one card you do use is pointless.

While USB readers are a pain, at least you can buy the correct reader for your media. Having a built in useless card reader is really annoying.

My four year old iBook runs Leopard without a hitch while my wife's (same vintage) Dell can barely boot in to XP and there's no way she'd get Vista to run on it. My kids- they're both dying to get their hands on a MacBook. You can keep yer Dell's, even though they're just down the freeway from us- I'll stick to my Macs thanks.

Did you do an upgrade or a clean install. I won't go into iphoto or mail issues because I don't use them, but on a whole Leopard runs much better on all the macs in our department, g4's-present. For us it was finder in tiger that was always crashing when dealing with our large file server, and it flys in leopard.

I would never buy a Dell regardless of how cool the machine is: they don't honor their warranties. The last Dell I bought broke and they refused to replace the defective hard disk drive, even though my machine was covered by an expensive warranty extension. Dell used to have great service; now it is orders of magnitude below Apple's. For me service beats aesthetics.

face it, apple can't make good softwares, only good software of OSX is fundamentally not their own work, and getting slower and slower, older and older, comparing to the development of linuxand now its hardware quality control is going down the toilet.

Mac OSX's patch is hidious, from 0.0.0 to 0.0.4, it gets better, afterwards, all patches are focused on holes, and eventually make the system slower and slower.

Based on the idea that this is the best Windows machine to buy - congrats to Dell. It's about time that a PC manufacturer releases a product that actually looks appealing. The computing experience is rapidly becoming just as much about the aestetics as it is about it's utility.

BTW, I say this as an Apple fanboy with a Dual 2.7 Ghz G5/20" Cinema Display, a 15" Macbook Pro, an iPhone, and a 30 gig iPod.

My mom bought a Dell WebPC back in 2000. Dell pulled the plug on it like 6 months later. I then upgraded it to XP and half the hardware stopped working due to lack of drivers. Dell refused to support me running XP on it. I will never buy another all in one Dell. Dell does not know how to make a good one. Apple's quality and support are lightyears ahead of Dell.

I use both PC's and Mac's and find that the best designed PC's (think Sony Viaos or the Samsung/LG PC's sold in the Korean market) still pale in comparison with Mac. The reason is that the PC manufacturers seem to think that by adding on a bit of whiz-bang, such as using a piano finish or some futuristic looking lights, makes for good design but nevertheless, design remains an afterthought. Macs by comparison would not look out of place displayed at the MOMA. Remember, Leonardo DaVinci said that "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication".

I really dont know how to react to this. There are things that I like about the XPS one, but I think, and for the same reasons apple WONT do it; that if they made OSX for whitebox PCs, I'd be all over the XPS one. It has nice hardware, granted, but the software is what does it for me. I own the baseline iMac, with an upgraded HDD to 500GB and 4GB of ram, and it still cost me less than the baseline XPS would have. And seeing as the CPU in the base imac is the T7300, and the XPS has the e4500(sic), That is another blow to Dell.

Leopard People...I was having a bit of the same sluggishness problems as y'all...
loading was fast, but then with a few programs open, everything starts to freeze up.
However, I only had 1GB RAM.
After a little bump to 2GB, everything was much faster than tiger, even when running 10 or so programs.
I think this has to do with Leopard's more efficient use of RAM.
Do y'alls have 1GB or more?

However, I mostly run the Pro Apps, and I've noticed a dramatic speed increase with Final Cut, Motion, Soundtrack and the Adobe Creative Suite. I figured Mail would have many problems considering the drastic overhaul they did, but I can live with that, as long as the programs I use 95% of the time work properly. And they do...

I don't think that on the software side, Windows should be compared to Apple's OS. Why? Despite what others say, there really isn't a "better" OS - it all boils down to preference between these two systems. Now, what you CAN bring up on the software side is the inclusion of Craplets and trial software - that is a legit criticism.

I'm curious as to why you didn't state who wrote that review. Could it have been a random review you found from a public forum...or worse yet, you? And you put quotation marks around it to make it look professional. Correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like in the paragraph about the price that since Dell is running a sale, that both machines cost the same (sure, when you add a wireless mouse and keyboard to the Mac...but you should add it when comparing it to a Dell that has the same thing). I'm not bashing the iMac, just don't know what the big fuss is...Both will fulfill your needs, just depends on what your needs are.

i was checking out the options for building the dell xps one...am i correct that you can't upgrage the video card or RAM? because it wasn't an option other than what they've set up already

After years of helping friends with their NASTY PC machines infested with God knows what, I will never go back to a windows based machine or recommend one to a friend or family. I even tell them, if you buy a PC do not call me for help.

Before all you Windows/PC drones wet yourselves, please read the review before commenting. The iMac still is the chosen one.

"I still recommend the iMac over the XPS One for several reasons other than hardware design. First, there's the software. I believe Apple's operating system, Leopard, is superior to the new Windows Vista operating system, the only choice on the XPS One. In my tests, a reboot of the XPS One took more than twice as long as a reboot of the iMac.

And I regard Apple's built-in software, especially the iLife multimedia suite, as superior to the Dell's built-in software, which includes a group of Adobe multimedia programs that are less well integrated and more complex.

The XPS One, unlike the iMac, also came with a bunch of craplets - trial software like Yahoo Music and come-ons for online services like NetZero.

Second, the iMac, unlike the Dell, is immune to the vast majority of malicious software floating around, so you don't have to run annoying, memory-hogging security programs. The first time I turned on the beautiful Dell I was met with a warning that I had "multiple security problems," and was led to install a security suite in a complex and tedious process.

Third, defying popular perception, the iMac costs less than the XPS One. The base, 20-inch iMac costs $1,199 - about $300 less. And even if you double the memory, and add a wireless keyboard and mouse to match the Dell, it's still $1,399 - $100 less than the base XPS One (though Dell is currently running a sale that wipes out the $100 gap). Even the cheapest iMac has a dedicated video card with its own memory, something the base XPS One lacks.

Plus, while Dell offers only 20-inch screens on the XPS One, Apple has higher-end iMacs with huge 24-inch screens for the same price, or less, than the higher-end Dells.

Still, if you want a stylish Windows Vista machine that runs well and won't cost a fortune, the XPS One fits the bill, despite its unlikely heritage."

I would have to agree with the guy this time. As much as the Apple gang would like to believe they are the hardware gods, Apple is, and always will be, about the combination of hardware & software. If you took windows or linux, and tied it to a specific set of hardware, I have no doubt you could make it just as good.

That being said, on the hardware front alone, the Apple lineup is just OK. It's very pleasing to the eye, or sexy as some would say, but they have just as many QA issues as any other manufacturer. Take the XPS ONE and slap OSX on it, and put it beside an iMac....I would take the XPS one hands down every time.

Having used leopard for awhile on a friends machines I was customizing, I would have to agree with you. Jaguar and Tiger felt progressively leaner & meaning that previous releases..Leopard seems to be all glitz, and just feels a bit sluggish in comparison to Tiger in it's later releases. By 10.5.7 it could be all good, but I think they pulled it out of the oven a tad bit early.

I hate their big silver dell logo and the big silver-triangular stand neck. It shouldn't come with that retarded default wallpaper either. Sony is the closest in the PC world to figure it out.

I dunno what to think. I run OS X Leopard and I have more problems with applications closing uexpectantly. I never had the isuess with OS X Tiger. The application with the most problems is iPhoto and Mail.

Also, I run Windows Vista and it runs much better than Leopard.

I think Apple needs to release a major update to fix alot of problems.

i half agree with him on the hardware, imac may not be as pretty with all kinds of extra connectors on it, but the extra connectors are nice. and os x is fantastic, so i have to agree with that part.
