I got this guy to review ( a lot later than you guys!) but it is awesome and I am loving it.

The websharing options, the revision system and the easy backup make this thing gold to the inexperienced user.

And how about gaining root on it and making it do your evil bidding for the nix gurus out there?

But can it play doom?

AskTheAdmin

I gave the mediasmart server (the larger 4 drive one) as a Christmas gift for my father. It worked fine as he copied his entire mp3 collection to it, and then it crashed less than 24 hours later, leaving nothing but a blinking red light which according to the manual means a bios failure. So I returned it and got him something else.

OtterKing

This thing looks like a 4-drive system, which is nice, but with linux software-RAID I prefer using RAID 6 (dual parity) instead of RAID 5 (single parity). I've seen too many cases where a linux software RAID 5 volume dies due to a single drive failure and then a second drive fails before the volume can be rebuilt, especially with the rapidly growing capacity of hard drives. To that end, I got a Thecus N5200, which holds 5 drives and supports RAID 6. The Thecus also supports the installation of custom modules and there's an active hacking community that offers all sorts of add-ons like rsync, ftp server, ssh/scp server, etc.

IphtashuFitz
