Doesn't that also corrupt the movie? And I'll bet my iPhone screen up close beats the 4:3 bubble screen on the tube TV I grew up with. At least I get the full aspect ratio and not pan and scan. To all the people remarking that David Lynch has never had to wait for a subway...well, first of all, he probably has. He didn't exactly grow up rich, whether or not he is now. But more to the point, if you said that to his face, then he wouldn't care; he'd tell you to do something other than watch a film.

He's an artist, and that holds true whether or not you think his art is trash or passé. Walter from the Big Lebowski said it best; "Say what you will about the tenets of National Socialism Dude, at least it's an ethos."

I totally sympathize, 2 hours on a bus every day would suck. I agree its hard to use a laptop on a commuter bus that's SRO. Thank God the longest SRO bus or metro I ever find myself on is about 20 minutes.

For myself, the only times I find myself stuck for 2 hours or more alone (outside my home) is AMTRAK, AIRPLANE, or GREYHOUND (rarely). I always take my laptop on those, and even with a laptop, I'll choose videogames or surfing over movies, because its hard for me to get immersed in a movie when there's a lot of noise and distraction.

Just like me, you don't have a daily 2 hour block stuck on a train/subway. And you don't watch feature films during your commute. You watch TV episodes.

I was not mocking the "ME" experience of using a PMP. I love "ME" experiences.

I was just saying that most people don't have many 2 hour opportunities of "ME" time to watch a portable feature film on UMD by themselves.

Most 2 hour blocks of free time are at home, where most iphone and psp owners have TVs and DVD players. If they have 2 hour blocks of free time away from home, that time usually contain at least one friend.

Busy people like yourself have a chunk of free "ME" time during their bus or subway commute... but those commutes are usually an hour or less. The target audience with a 2 hour bus/subway commute (to watch a feature film) has got to be pretty tiny.

Anybody who commutes 4 hours a day on public transportation needs to get a new job. Or if the job is really so important to be worth a 2 hour commute, they probably need to get work done while they're commuting, not watch movies.

And I agree HOMICIDE was an incredible show. Love HSB, NYPDB, L&O too. ;P

I really am curious to know though. Where and when are people out there watching feature films regularly on their Iphones? Other than transatlantic flying, iphone owning, solo travelers, who don't carry laptops, like EDGARJ, I mean (just playing, EDGARJ).

An hour-long drama is about 44 minutes. I don't watch Star Wars on the go. But Homicide: Life On The Street is a damn good drama, is 44 minutes long, and in 4:3 format.

Which is why someone needs to come out with a DVD ripper that will convert a disc of episodes in under an hour on a MacBook.

Well said. Ever since I purchased my 1st HDTV, 5 yrs ago, I've found myself staring at 'Sunrise Earth' and a slew of action movies that I never would have been able to stomach five minutes of prior to the shift of focus that you spoke of in your post.

Still, I can't imagine that watching a movie on my iPhone being a less entertaining experience than watching 'Eraserhead' from a completely worn-out VHS tape rendered on a 27" Magnavox CRT. BTW, I had to pay a $100 deposit in order to rent (from Movie Madness, Portland) because it was out of print and the intertubes were still but a movieless trickle at the time. I personally can't wait for an iPhone download of 'Inland Empire' to watch on my transatlantic trip.

I watched "Planet Terror" on my Touch and after about 10 minutes I was engrossed enough, and the resolution was sharp enough, and the iPod was close enough, that it didn't matter what the actual physical size was. But it depends on the film, and one's intentions for watching the film(s).

Maybe I want to review a film I've already seen before, or analyze the story or dialogue. I have several old films on my Touch, from the 30's and 40's, that I'm studying for a screenwriting class.

It's ironic that Mr. Lynch is (or seems to be) so vehement in his disdain for this medium, after running films on his website and shooting a lot of "Inland Empire" in rather low-res video. But I do see his point, although it does require a sacrifice by many to turn their backs on instant-gratification technology.

I'd also like to go back to a simpler time, when films projected large in a grand auditorium were the norm. But I think the genie is out of the bottle. Could this be the start of an anti-small medium movement? Then I suggest we get rid of our televisions, flat-screen displays and use our computers for reading and writing text only. That would be an interesting aesthetic.

1) To enjoy a 2 hour movie, you can't be interrupted every 3 minutes. Imagine trying to enjoy STAR WARS, if you had to leave the theatre for a second or two, 20 times during the movie.

2) When you have a tiny screen you need to watch it close up, and put on some ear buds. Watching a movie with one eye on your friends in the half-pipe, listening to their boombox in the background is pointless. It's like being in a theatre with some idiots in front of you jabbering away the entire time.

3) Watching movies on a tiny screen is a "ME ONLY" experience. Two people can't share it, and movies are only half as enjoyable if you are watching it alone.

So in order to enjoy the iphone or Ipod for watching a movie:

You need 2 hours where you have NOTHING ELSE TO DO, where you are going to PUT ON HEAD PHONES, and NOT have ANY FRIENDS to TALK to... AND not be at somebody's apt or house (where there are DVD players, TV, PS2, PS3 etc.)

When does that situation come up for an adult? I guess if you're a friendless, homeless person, who hangs out at places that lack TV sets.

I can't think of a single time in the past 30 years, where I've had 2 hours to kill, where I could afford to put on headphones & shut out the world, where I didn't have access to a TV, friends to talk to, or laptop with a screen 5x the size of the Iphone or PSP. Bus? Plane? Laptop.

Well too bad! Truth hurts. The man is an artist who makes movies, devotes himself to his craft, the craft of immersing YOU in a whole artistic experience.

Having to know that the thing he loves can be seen in such a cheap, silly way must be horrifying for him. It's like showing Rodin your sticky dashboard versions of his sculptures. Or reading the spark notes version of Hamlet. Just knowing that the spark notes version of Hamlet exists makes me angry. It's ridiculous. Why should Lynch think any differently.

"If I think I experienced something, then I experienced it". This is ludicrous. Just because you think you've experienced Hamlet from the spark notes doesn't make it true. It in fact makes it the most debased artistic lie, because not only are you NOT getting any real truth from it, but you're actually lying to yourself.

Now, as for watching crap on your phone, I think Lynch probably wouldn't care. I think he'd be perfectly happy if you watched 9 seasons of Chobits on your telephone. That's not his art.
