The PS3 and to a much greater extent the Xbox 360 both make far too much noise for a home theater component. The 5500 will be a welcome addition at this price point.

confab

I don't get it...buy a PS3 ($400), buy a HD-DVD player ($200) or an XBOX360 ($300), get both, and and get a SHITLOAD of free HD-DVD/BLU-RAY dvd's for free, and still get out on top of this stupid war with BOTH gaming titles on top; minus maybe $100, which saves the hours you spend reading on which format is better.

Wish I hadn't just bought the Toshiba HD-D3 at Costco. It was so cheap though. Oh well, I needed an old fashioned upscaling DVD player anyway, so I guess im only out about a hundred bucks if you consider what I would have spent anyway.

Let me know when this hits 399. I think that will be the sweet spot. Sub 200 for the stand alone BluRay players.

brandon208402

The BP-5000 indeed has a few missing features, but they appear to be solvable. The rest of the unit is stone-axe reliable in my book.

FOr those that need both formats and cannot use a two-system solution (e.g. port shortages), this price beats BD + HD + new AVR handily. The UP5000 at $750 is also a good deal right now, assuming those updates happen. This announcement seems to indicate Samsung is still in the game.

kcmurphy88

I'm not too up to date on prices...but is this finally a combo player that doesn't cost more than the sum of a stand-alone BluRay and (1080p) HD-DVD player?

Technologically, I never saw any reason for a combo player to cost more than two individual players...worst case scenario, you've got two complete distinct systems in there that read from the same optical drive and output to the same outputs -- where's the extra cost come from?

EQC
