The problem with M$ is really that it's too many cooks in the oven, too many speaking different languages, and by the time they all get on the same page, they are years behind. Most anything they release is a knee-jerk reaction to stuff in the market, and typically 5 years behind by the time it comes out. As a result, 2009 is an "early" prediction.

WM:Have to dig through 1,000,000,000 menus to find anything,not so great browser,etc....... please don't take my word for it i have limited experience with both but from what i can tell it's about that way.MS also likes to attempt to make there software 'pretty' instead of practical (as mentioned in previous comments) but it would be a good idea if instead of always trying to 1up the competition they just come up with original design (did i hear someone say nintendo?) for once but Micro$oft being who they are i don't think they ever will.

And to be honest you can't really compare Microsoft to Apple because Microsoft are OS developers and programs developers, so unless Apple release Mac OS X to the wider world they will never kill Microsoft

Tomorrow's paper tiger is always nicer than today's shipping tiger, and given Microsoft's history of muffing ship dates and removing functionality, this is likely, again, to be way too little, way too late.

I'm sure Microsoft wants to make good products. Pretty much everyone does. But if Vista is any indication, they don't know how. (The last Microsoft program that really impressed me was MASM, their Z80 assembler for CP/M.) Wherever did they get the idea to use multitouch? Why, it's revolutionary.

They should put a stop to making products with a lot of modifiability and options to tweak and customize. Customers want something simple. They should also stop making products that don't have power options and many options, because power users want more to their device.

Another thing they need to do is make something brand new, so we can finally break from the mold of me-too products. They also need to finally make products that are familiar, and are just improvements to what they have done before.

WM7 is two years behind 2007. Can't imagine what it will be going up against years from now with a 3rd Generation iPhone, touchscreen BlackBerries, Android and I'm betting a heavier US presence of Symbian care of Nokia.

Microsoft desperately needs to leap ahead of the game.

Bad enough that this leaked (if it's legit) -- iPhone's UI didn't leak, after all) -- but to leak now for 2009? Crazy.

Also, Microsoft, could we please get some dang brand leverage going? Notice: iPhone, iPod, iMac, iLife, etc.? Xbox is at least moderately popular and accepted. Rename your Zune and WinMob to tie into that brand, and unify the Marketplace to service the unified brand as a whole.

Then hire some next gen designer to make decent hardware.

Please, the competition is needed.

Cluttered, throwing a bunch of iPhoneish gestures on Windows mobile with a Vista skin.

Even before they worry about eye candy and gestures, they should be worrying about performance. How about some decent memory management? Optimization? Why does Windows Mobile crawl on my Dell Axim X51(520mhz or so processor).

Instead of trying to imitate the iPhone, WM should be going after the downfalls. What would be killer is to have it more reasonable and accessible to upgrade OS's. Don't make it a choice of the OEMs. I'm stuck on WM5 because Dell abandoned the Axims. How nice would it be if I could pay to upgrade if I wanted. That would really make the iPhone a bit more of a traget with Apple's history of upgrading (Limited on majority of Macs, no firmware upgrades like the Zune did with iPods, etc)

But hey, just trying to imitate Apple's previous product is just Microsoft being Microsoft.

Assuming these are even true, i would say that from those photographs, this type of interface would be the LEAST like the iPhone, compared to the other ones ive seen, and i would give them credit if they made a decent, nice looking and functional interface that didnt use the same gridded icons that the iPhone uses.

could it be that instead of creating a Zune phone that instead they come out with a Zune platform for Windows Mobile phones?
