I have a 720p Epson projector, and it looks just as good (if not better) than my old Panasonic 720p 50" plasma. And yes, I can use it with the lights on. I use it day and night, and can always see the projector just fine. The key is to get a projector with high lumens (like 1500+, preferably 1700). I got my 720p projector for $1000, and figure that in a year the 1080p projectors will come down $1000, and I can get a 1080p then and sell my 720p. Yes, bulbs cost $200 - $300, but last about three years... so in my opinion if you can a room that you can set up a projector in (you need speakers, etc) then do so.

]]> <![CDATA[Holy Crap: First 150-Inch Plasma Photos]]> I love my projector. At home it's 124" HD 1080i. It's an old InFocus X1 and it still looks amazing with my 360. Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Halo 3, Rock Band... it rules.

I bring it to my dorm for a 40ish" screen there. For that size maybe an LCD is cheaper, but for 124" less than a grand isn't so bad!

Projectors are only good if you have a dedicated room. My friends had one in their apartment but with company, and other things to do in the living room it just wasn't useful. Sure it was big but it had to be dark. He likes his new 60" TV, it's very good.

In my case we can leave some lights on in the room and it will still work. Plus I only use it for movies and games, not for TV.

Besides, I don't know how much juice it's using... my projector only uses something like 250 watts. Plus, you can stash your projector, take it on family visits, take it to Halo night at your friends, etc. Sure a projector might not be ideal in bright daylight, but if you're home to watch TV during the day, than you probably can't afford either item.
