I'm so stoked Samsung is looking at the 80" market - not sure what price they want for that though. I had stopped at Pioneer, Panasonic and even LG to ask them if they had an 80" unit. I know a LOT of people looking to upgrade their old 65" screens to something 1080p and LARGER. Only one is considering a projector but he has crazy money I'll never have in my lifetime. Most cheaper projectors just don't look that good in my opinion although I think there is surely a big market for cheap projectors.

All the reps from Pioneer, Panasonic and LG basically said the same thing - we are getting a lot of requests for that size range but can't currently comment on units of that size being released at this time. Hopefully that means they are developinng them or of course it just could mean a. they didn't want to just say no or b. they get a lot of requests but no one is listening (I find a lot of that in all industries - auto, computer, HT, cell phones, etc.)

boe

Wow!! OOH! AAAH! But with our computers we cannot even see the damn pictures in ultra high def so they look damn just regular def to me.

Hey I just want 2 really nice 1080p in my Hizzouse. 40 in the bedroom and 60 in the entertainment room and I will be fine. Hell I still have my projection screen 1080i that I am still McLovin from 6 years ago. People still are amazed with the damn picture. I cannot wait until this technology comes into play just so the prices come back into reality. I remember when a very good TV that sat in the living room cost between $400-$800. Now is $2500+. Once this technology comes out at least it will be bringing the cost of the current technology down. Higher resolution, thinner, lower cost = better chance I will get those 2 TV's this or next year.

Grifter

@dave-o: Of course, you could plug 4 networked PS3's/360's into it...and play multiplayer with each guy getting full control of his own machine and a 1080p viewable area. Or, better yet, put 4 people on each of those machines, and have each 1080p split 4 ways -- 16 people trying to look at one (big) TV.

Or, you know, save some money (and logic) and get 4 HDTV's.

EQC

@halopower67: If you're talking about the NHK demo, that's double this again. NHK was doing 7680 x 4320, wheras this 'UHDTV' is only half the resolution of that demo. NHK said they were working on (or maybe already have) doing live transmission, though I'm not sure (at least uncompressed) that it can be done wirelessly. The cameras used 16 HD-SDI connections, which run at a bitrate of 1.485 Gbit/s.

TVGenius

If you told them about 1080p they would have laughed in disbelief at the time.

Nobody ever sits closer than 14' from an 82" screen...and everybody knows that at 14' away, you can't tell the difference between 1080p and 2160p on anything smaller than 100"!!!! OMG, this is stupid!

On a serious note: if upscaled DVD's look so great on HDTV's, wouldn't it be worthwhile to have a 2160p TV before broadcasts/disks are available in that resolution? Of course, you'd have to have a video scaler that worked well at that resolution, which could take a while (IIRC, the first 30" 1600p computer monitors would only run at native resolution because there weren't video scalers available to handle so many pixels.)

EQC

I remember i saw ultra high definion on the NAB convention also there in LV last year and i tried to take pictures with the best camera i had there and its just not possible to completly see all the detail the image of the screen produces, its absolutley amazing. Too bad that broadcasting it is extremely hard to do, whenever they start broadcasting 2160p i will definately buy an UHDTV.

halopower67
