@computer_chef. Your point that DVD outsells the major HD formats is correct. At one time, there were more 8-track tapes sold than cassettes too, when cassettes were first introduced. And, at one time, there were more laser discs sold than DVD movies. Now laser discs, cassettes and 8-track formats are as dead as your argument that we should embrace the past rather than define the future.

This Christmas, I debated whether to get a 360 or a PS3. I wanted the PS3 because it had a Blu-Ray player built in to the gaming system and most of the major studios had thrown their weight there (never mind that I don't have an HD TV. Yet.) In the end, I went with the 360 because the CONTENT I wanted to play--Halo 3, Gears of War and Bioshock--were only available for the 360. Turns out that content isn't just king on the web.

This same is true for the two HD formats out there. By having a clear winner, the industry--hardware manufacturers and software developers (the production companies) can shift their resources to growing demand for this category, rather than fighting format wars over which is better. They reduce consumer confusion and hesitancy over whether to invest in an upgrade by simplifying the equation. Once consumers can upgrade without fear they chose poorly, they'll make the move.

btw--you're also wrong about a detail in your Transformers example. It was not released on Blu-Ray. Doesn't change the overall numbers--DVD is still king, for now--but worth correcting.

scotty_g

Hey this is Albert Penello from Xbox. Lots of posts on this topic of course and some confustion. The point I was making was that the Reuters article made it seem like we had some plan in place to launch a BD accessory. When you have a 30min interview and it gets condensed to 4 paragraphs you loose some stuff :)

So I wanted to clarify: I'm not denying what I said - if the war has a definitive winner we'd consider it. But *right now* we have no plans and we support HD DVD. As some have pointed out, Peter Moore was quoted saying the same thing, and I said it when we first launched the player. It's one of the benefits of doing an external drive. Heck, if LaserDisc 2 comes out we could think about that as well.

Not sure that 'clarification' is the same as 'backpedaling', but maybe I'm being sensitive :)

@VAGABUM - what exactly did I backpedal on at EA when I was there 8 years ago and I was in my mid-20's? Did we work together on a project?

Thanks everyone for the comments!

@crycry: What is condescending is you assuming I can't grasp what is going on just because you don't like what I'm saying. The truth remains that neither format has enough traction to claim victory, and studios still have no choice but to do what the public decides. Warner knows, and so should an educated consumer, they could easily flop back over to HD-DVD if they aren't happy with the resulting Blu-ray sales. The fact that studios think they can pick one format at this stage is a huge mistake and the raw number tell the whole story, but for some strange reason sites like Gizmodo and the rest of the PR machine have a hard time reporting that.

And your claim that the titles have been "disposable" is laughable. The biggest selling title for 2007, Transformers, was on all three formats. The DVD sales for one day exceeded both HD format sales combined for the entire year. Anyone who thinks it's the format war alone that's made that significant a difference is fooling themselves. The whole thing is a tempest in a teacup, and the studio execs need to screw their heads on straight and actually make some smart choices.

Computer_Chef

@Computer_Chef: The movies aren't selling because no studio wants to commit to a losing format. There are a lot of resources that go behind releasing classic movies so they haven't bothered to release more than a handful of ground breaking movies. All they've been doing is pumping out the disposable movies like "Click" because it's no big risk. Having 70% support is a big deal. Just wait till real titles like LOTR, Star Wars, Godfather etc come out in one format only, then you'll get why this is a big deal.

It's condescending to call everyone sheeple when you can't wrap your head around the simple fact that when it comes to deciding a new format for movies, the winner will be decided by which side own the most titles. On top of that once the momentum switches the remaining studios will have no choice but to join the winning side.

crycry

MS is indeed missing the boat. I know my brother was planning on getting the HD-DVD drive for his 360. Not anymore. And I know he isn't the only one. Now if Microsoft released a reasonably priced BluRay addon for the 360, he'd jump all over it like a fat kid on a cupcake, as would many other people. Sorry MS and Toshiba, but it looks like Sony won this round. Better luck in the next format war, which should be what, 2 years from now?

And no one needs to feel old over the Pearl Harbor thing. I'm only 21 and immediately knew where that quote was from the second I saw it. So unless 21 is now considered old and I didn't get the memo, you don't have anything to fear.....and if you can't figure out which movie the "didn't get the memo" references, you fail at life.

yg17

What's even funnier is that everyone is acting like, oh, Paramount and Microsoft could switch at any time, yet it's just as likely that someone could announce HD-DVD exclusivity. I'll keep laughing, too, if all you sheeple get amazed when that happens and suddenly think that, whoa, it's on again!

Computer_Chef

Man I got timed out before I could post a novel on Sony's trojan strategy working and how HD DVD could have benefited from a similar situation. Long story short there is about 1 million combined HD DVD players (stand alone and 360 addon) and there is about 3.7 million Blu Ray players (PS3 and stand alone) in the US. Plus this other really big tech blog named In Gadgets (or something like that, the whole operation over there seemed a little shady) is reporting Universal, the only tangible company keeping HD DVD alive may be switching teams.

thechansen

Um, I seriously doubt that Microsoft is going to admit ANY plans to go Blu at this point in time. The closest we will come to any suggestion of that is Pennello's vague comment. But the media ran way too far with that and now they have to backpedal, partly because they have agreements and relationships with Toshiba, and partly because they simply haven't had time to figure anything out yet.

I do believe that, once the dust settles and the winner is clear, they will start thinking more about it because they HAVE to. But I don't expect them to rush into it at all. We'll know once they know for certain, and that's gonna be a while.

redman042

Most likely they'll announce that they will ship all their movies in both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray for the foreseable future. Meanwhile, stores like best buy will stop carrying HD-DVD movies and players (they want a single winner probably more than anyone else), Toshiba and the rest of the HD-DVD-only player Mfg. will announce "Dual format Machines" quickly followed by blu-ray only machines, and the format will slide into obscurity.

AndyDuncan

Boy, this type of stuff gets me ANGRY. Butm maybe that's because I'm looking at a picture of the Hulk, and Hulk #1 just shipped today from Marvel. --Anywho... Microsoft said this a LOOOOOONG time ago. People started to make a big deal out of it then too, and they had to issue something that said, "No, no... you misconstrued what we said!" It's like the media is a pack of hyena's disparately trying to TRICK their "prey" into providing them with some "food", even if its FAKE food. It's really LAME. The so-called "confirmations" above are entirely unnecessary... but they *almost* go too far in the other direction too. Microsoft originally said, (paraphrasing) that IF consumer demand was there, they *could* always do a Blu-Ray player add-on. But, they NEVER, EVER EVER said that they "would", "are", "might", or "intend to". The comments above say the same thing.

The REAL question would have been to honor what they really said, and ask them for clarification AFTER showing you've understood them in the first place. Basically, IF a Blu-Ray drive is a theoretical possibility, THEN what kind of market trigger would Microsoft look for before they would begin to consider DOING one? From the questions/answers above, aside from horror for forcing someone to repeat themselves in multiple ways... one NEW thing, seems to be the implication that such a move would ONLY happen AFTER Toshiba has decided to END support for their HD DVD initiative.

Step back from a moment, and you'll realize the BOTTOM LINE of what Microsoft has intended to say since the beginning. Namely, "DON'T STOP BUYING XBOX 360's, because the hardware you buy TODAY could be made to work with ANYTHING." That is the ONLY... ONLY... I say, ONLY thing they've ever meant to imply.

Cleverboy

Well it wasn't really failing at the time the introduced it, but if you look at the proliferation of DVD PS2 did play a major role in it. Microsoft shat the bed when they made it a $200 add on. PS3 has bluray built in. Needless to say, that is giving BluRay a huge boost in total number of players on the market. Hell I forget the one survey but most 360 owners didn't even know they could play regular DVDs on the system.

@simpsons-movie-ruled:
No worries, but it's a cult classic. Even if you choose to never actively seek it out to watch it, in your lifetime you will some how see it, at some point. Kinda like the Christmas Story.

thechansen

I think if MS wants to get an edge in on PS3, dual support of Blu-Ray and HD DVD would certainly give them an advantage. Then again 360 has poor video playback in terms of DVD and HD DVD (which in turn could be fixed with a software update) and sales of the HD DVD addon haven't been all that great if you compare the number of xbox 360 HD DVD drives sold compared to the number of PS3s.
