I don't know what's up with all the hate around here ... this IS the thinnest laptop on the planet and runs faster than any other laptop with a comparable formfactor. It has 5 hours battery lifetime and looks nuttily stylish. Business consultatants or marketing folks with buy this thing like there is no tomorrow. For students they got the macbook, for pro's / devs / freaks they got the macbook pro and for the people who need portability and style the got the macbook air. filled that gap! and yeah, a porsch does have a puny little trunk and a an mpg rate that crashes by bank account, but hey ... if you want something pratical, get a Prius (greetings to Jeff Dunham, you rock!)

Solid state is a new technology in the CONSUMER computer market. Yes it's pricey as fuck, true. But once this starts to become widely accepted as the norm and becomes a mainstream product the price will drop and there will be more manufacturers developing 'solid state drives' that they may even make a super micro drive that can fit in my dickhole without ripping open my cock's vien.

ps. what this means is... if you can afford it buy it you rich useless dumbfuck. If not... chill the fuck out enjoy your Mackbook non-air or Dell or whaterver the fuck you've got and wait till shit is on like the break of dawn on that ass.

gary_slamson.

For those of us that have millions and love bleeding edge, lightweight, sleek laptop designs above some 6+ lbs full desktop replacement, price is never an issue. Since when has $1,700-$3,000 for an ultra-light with these one-of-a-kind features been considered pricey anyway? My iPhones cost $800 apiece... Ultra-light laptops by definition won't meet a large segment of the market's needs as a primary computer. Anyway, remember when Apple ditched the floppy drive first? How about canning the modem first as well? So who needs gigabit ethernet on a made-for-the-business-CEO road warrior ultra-light? I am happy Apple has finally thought of us at the other end of life's spectrum - been thinking they had forgotten us in favour of the k-12 thru college kids again. So Apple, I applaud you and urge you to, every now and then, make a super visionary, super expensive, super niched tech toy for us.

TGaylord

Of course it's stupid expensive relative to what people are used to paying for flash memory, but christ... in a couple of years, SSDs will be the norm.
Also bet they could have combined the video and audio outputs to HDMI and saved some real-estate, made it easier to connect to many TVs, and add digital audio out. Could have popped them out of the AppleTVs they haven't sold.

skittlesum

I agree, I'm having a hard time seeing what target audience they're going for here. I have the blackbook and it's plenty light and portable. This is obviously for extensive travelers. But how frustrating will it be the first time you need to put a CD in and can't?

Also, will someone please tell me the price break down between the two systems on the front page. Specifically, how much the SSD costs and how much the processor costs. No one's pointed that out yet. Nope. Not a single person.

sablesma

@Husher: Realistically this is not a gaming machine (I probably don't need to tell you that). The shared memory to video and relatively low CPU speed effectively kills anything with serious graphics.

Though this is typically Apple with the SSD. They go out on these limbs to slowly push the industry forward. I remember when everyone made hay about Apple dropping floppy drives years ago. Now there isn't a laptop with a floppy and by default Dell doesn't give you one (I'm not sure how other manufactures work in regards to this). With Apple pushing it like this (despite the price) SSD will probably be quickly adopted and the prices will be halved before we know it.

EmptyRepublic

Its funny how every time apple comes out with something new, people assume its marketed for everyone. The SSD is an option to those who don't want the drive, and like with all better and newer technology its going to cost more until its been out for a while. As others have stated the $1,300 is for both the processor and SSD. Don't complain about a luxury you aren't being forced to buy to begin with. This is why they have other options.

It's like complaining that a Porsche sucks because it costs too much. Its probably not going to do great on gas like your Honda will, but its a Porsche.

Brown_Noise

It's a little before it's time. I am all for no moving parts. The SSD model is pretty bullet proof, and likely it will be extremely reliable- perhaps the most reliable and durable Mac product since the 12" PowerBook (Or the eMate).

64Gb is enough. I don't need my entire iTunes library, a bunch of movies, etc..

I also think the removal of the optical drive makes sense. I wish they would offer a second HD in place of an optical drive. I have been happily running my MB with two HD and no optical drives.

People should stop whining about the SSD price. As several have pointed out, even $1000-$1300 is a good price for a 64GB 1.8" SSD right now. Apple doesn't set the price for this type of thing...they've got to buy it from somebody else. Apple isn't the Jebus.

Plus, IT'S AN OPTION. On a computer that YOU DON'T HAVE TO BUY ANYWAY. The form-factor, battery life, etc. will be worth it to some, not to all.

Anyway, give it a few months and the price may just fall like a rock (like the iPhone did). Then half of you will be back whining because it's too cheap and not fair since you bought it right when it came out at full price.

EQC
