THESE PEOPLE EXIST !!! Just because they are not us and don't care about tech specs, ram, processor performance, battery life, screen resolution and so on doesn't mean they don't exist.

In most cases, a CEO is a pin-man setup to take blame for under-delivering numbers and threatening rivals gaining headway in the marketplace. Steve Jobs runs the company with a "hands-on" approach that a Fine French Chef has to his cuisine. You can use a flash drive OR an external hard disk OR an optical drive OR a wired ethernet connection OR a mouse OR ... no thanks.

So if I want to burn a DVD image from my external HD, I can't, because the internal drive is already full (and not upgradeable).

When shopping for a new laptop, the second most important item on the list (after screen size/resolution) is number of USB ports. Anything under four (preferrably two per side) gets crossed off the list.

Perhaps it's too much to expect, but I wish that this type of discussion would just die. You hate it, you love it. No one cares about your opinion as an individual. The internet may give you an outlet to express it, but remember that everyone reading it regards your comment with the same weight that you regarded the 300+ comments that you scrolled past to get to the posting box.

As for the merits of the MacBook Air, it was designed by one of the most successful corporations in the world today. Like it or hate it, wish it had X or didn;'t have Y, you can rest assured that this product has been well researched by people smarter than you. They are designing another while you post on the interwebs.

My personal. useless opinion is that it is a beautiful thing. It has limits and it has capabilities. It is not all things to all people. This is pretty much a requirement in making actual things. I think it would make a wonderful travel tool for me, and using Remote Desktop to access my Mac Pro would give my unbelivable horsepower while sitting aon my couch should I need it. I don't know if I'll purchase one or not, but I do like it.

That said : Apple fucked up the price point BIG TIME. $1800 is too much money for this machine. $1900 if you get the optical with it. At $1100-$1200 this would be a hit... at $1900 I'll get a slightly thicker Macbook Pro (once they update it) for $99 more and have alot more computing power to boot.

Now, that having been said - how about multitouch for the macbook and macbook pro? Its a nice feature, but not enough to warrant purchasing an at best mediocre piece of hardware (yes, the case and shape and size are well above mediocre, but look at what the thing is packing!). I mean seriously, when was the last time anyone here used a PATA harddrive? And a thousand bucks to upgrade to SSD? So just to be clear, my options are either the slowest harddrive I've seen in recent memory in a high ender, or the fastest, but only by pushing this thing into an astronomical price range.

Let me put it into perspective for you. Macbook air with 1.8ghz duo, 2gb memory, and the 64GB solid state = 3090 bucks. Now I know its not a laptop, but...
Macpro with 2 2.8ghz quad core xeons, 2GB of ram, a fuckload better vid card,and a 320gb 7200RPM drive = 2799...and thats with an optical drive.

As further comparison...for about 1500 bucks you can get a 17", 2.3 AMD2, 2GB of ram, lightscribe drive, and dual 120GB 7200rpm drives. Yes, it weighs more and doesn't have the 'sexy look'...but its a shitload more machine for your money.

Where is the tablet? Where is the upgrade for existing macbooks? I didn't want a computer designed for moms with too much money on their hands: I wanted a hardcore notebook dammit!!!!!!!

When people say optical drive, they mean DVD or CD, so that you can install software, or read/write stuff on commonly available disks...

For a computer more suited to the mobile professional lifestyle than what I've got now I won't blink at 2500-3500. The MBA isn't it. Here's why:

Total carry weight and size are a big deal but the MBA has the same footprint (13" screen plus) and with a couple accessories (USB hub, WWAN, charger) you're at about the same size and 2 lb under carrying a plastic MacBook. Moreover the USB WWAN won't fit in the recessed USB port requiring an additional component.

I think this will sell to status-oriented casual users but for me to bite I need some of the following:

- Onboard WWAN (saves the USB dongle)
- Smaller footprint (10-12 could work, allows a smaller bag)
- Extended battery life (8-12 hours, saves the power brick)

That said it's still a work of art and the $1800 version might eventually replace my plastic MacBook.

My (rapidly depreciating) $.02.

BESIDES, what does it do that a eee doesn't? have a big hard drive...essential in teh world of checking email and browsing the web. Meh, yeah the hard drive sucks for a laptop, but it's not actually a laptop. Oh and the eee happens to have a full keyboard also...amazing on something that is the size of a hard cover book. I will sit on my hands until the eee2 decides to hit the market in which we will see a laptop affordable to everyone that has enough juice to run commercial grade games (not crysis you morons) and is slimmer and has a nice large ssd hard drive. All of this without breaking the bank.

And who likes OSX anyway? Even if you do Hackintosh it onto something else. (which btw is against apples BS user agreement for OSX that states that you can only install OSX on an APPLE branded machine). The eee ships with a flavor of LINUX! talk about super user worthy!

The air may fit in an envelope but its still a 13" laptop, so it's not super mobile. The ssd option is way to pricey at this point in time, and if it uses the ipod hard drive where's the 160gb option? If I can't replace my hd and I have to use a slow 1.8" drive I want at least over 100gb.

So what does the MBA have going for it? multitouch, which already exists at a lower level in mb and mbps, but now you can pinch zoom and rotate photos with a rotate motion(. Also the zooming in safari just increases the text size, no where near the robustness of zooming in safari on the iphone/touch.

This thing is pure gimmick, apple should have updated the mbp's casing, added multitouch and introduced a 12" model with dedicated graphics like everyone actually wants.

What pisses me off is that Apple - who despite their bad adverts and unpleasantly smug fans still do make great products and innovate brilliantly, e.g. the iPhone - got side-tracked into wasting time and space on something like this instead of focussing on the more interesting products they showed this year...

The last time I've used my optical drive was for importing a CD, not listening to it. I've also used it for ripping DVDs, not viewing them. The optical drive pretty much serves as a way to move media, not use it.

The world is slowly going digital for all content delivery. Apple has seen it and is pushing for it. This is shown not only with MacBook Air, but also with Time Capsule, which is a wireless backup solution.
