@Tommasta - if you knew anything about physics, you'd realize that there is a vacuum formed between the cup and the water.

If you flip the cup, and any air is able to travel, water falls. In an apparatus like this, there is no way it could work b/c someone would just need to bump it and all the water would fall on the floor.

luckyxero

@luckyxero: Grab a cup and a pitcher. fill both with water. Cup your hand over the cup, sealing it. Invert, and insert the open end of the cup into the pitcher full of water (submersing it) and leave the "bottom" of the cup in the air above the water line.Let go of the opening of the cup. VOILA! All of the water stays in the cup, and doesn't spill out even though it's higher up than the water in the tank. No vacuum needed. I learned this in the third grade.

Also, gravity pulls STRAIGHT DOWN. So although that's a lot of water in the bridge, it's not all weighing down on those two small tanks - it's almost all supported by the structure and it's supports. Do you know a damned thing about physics?

Tommasta

@Vagabum: It just bugs me when people who actually make something unusual and ingenious don't get credit for it just because other people don't bother to do proper research. It took me less than two minutes to find the original source yet it's not quoted or referred to in any way by any of the major blogs who have resurrected this story. For instance, did you know that he actually wrote a book about the Fish Highway that explains how to build one? That would be perfect content for the Giz had they bothered to dig a little deeper than simply regurgitate what other bloggers have said before.

@fumunda: A better mod would be to build an air-tight habitrail for hamsters and run several lines of tubes through the fish tanks. That would sort of be the hamster equivalent of the water slide that goes through the shark tank in the Bahamas. I wonder if it would freak out the hamsters or if they would be attracted to the smaller fish.

As for getting fish to swim through the bridge, maybe they need two separate bridge lines and a pump to create a current that the fish can swim down, or against (like salmon).

Vagabum

OK, physics:

There is no such thing as vacuum pulling or sucking water up. There is only atmospheric pressure pushing water into the tanks (and therefore up the tubes).

The size of the tanks is irrelevant, only the height of the 'column' of water in the tubes, whether both tube ends are submerged, and whether the height of water in the tanks is equal (because if its not equal at the start, it will be in about a second).

Altitude at Evanston Illinois is 600 feet above sea level, so the air pressure is close to 1 ATM (I'm sure its in the ballpark of .99 ATM). 1 ATM = 760 Torr = 76 cm Mercury column = column of water 408 inches in height = 34 feet.

So the tunnel system can work up to a height of about 34 FEET above the water level in the tanks (of course I think those crappy looking seals on the tunnel would fail in a tunnel much lower than 34 feet.

Of course, if even a tiny leak develops in their tunnel anywhere , the entire contents of the tubes will fall into the tanks.

dcartist

This is not really something new. I had a set of tubes (much like for hamster cages) designed for an aquarium when I was a kid (about 20 years ago). It worked on the same principle as water being trapped in a glass when pulled upside down from a tank. The water would stay in the tube as long as both ends remained submerged.
It was hard to get re-filled and set after a tank cleaning, and about the only fish to really use it were the algae eaters. So it eventually was tossed out as being not-worth-the-effort.

steven522

There's no way this would work under open conditions (atmospheric temperature and pressure).

An air vacuum, even highly industrial freeze dryer vacuums, do not have enough capacity to suspend water and keep it from falling into the tanks. It would work if it the tanks were sealed, but they aren't. The depth of the water in the fish tanks is not sufficient to balance the pressure of the water in the bridge. If the tanks were about 5 feet tall at their current cross sectional area, it may work. I smell Shananigans!

@Delosworld - the fish tanks in the link you provided are big enough to support the pressure of the water in the bridge, 2 tanks of water to support about 1 tanks worth of bridge water. In this scenario, the bridge looks like it is about 30 tanks worth. 2 small fish tanks cannot support that weight.

luckyxero

When I created mine, I had to put the tunnels on the side of the tank at the most common level at which the fish swam to encourage them to use it. I also ran a 1/8 perforated airhose through it to keep the water curculating otherwise it gets a bit messy. Oh and you do have to keep the tanks and tubes at the same level. It's fun to look at and the Cats love it!

SFCritter

@Cheve: Actually, if you opened the top you'd let air in, which would immediately allow the water in the "bridge" to flow out into the tanks. What's keeping the water there is that there's no air available to displace it.

You'd have to build the bridge, put it in place, and then suck the air out of it while you added water to the tanks. You can test this phenomenon at home by taking a glass, submerging it in the sink, letting it fill with water and then pulling it out of the sink ass-end first. Because there's no air to leak in, the water stays in the glass (until you let the lip break the surface).

AndyDuncan

I am thinking of a piece of *art* that you would put up against a wall and cover the entire wall with these twists and turns for the fishies to swim in. I am 35 now and realize that cleaning somethign like this would suck. Not to mention the water-proofing of a cage designed to have air-holes. Still a neat concept. You go over to somebodies house and they have fish swimming through all these tubes. I think it would be cool to see (not to own).

fumunda
