@PEREC: i would have to totally agree with you, since when does no optical drive mean useless? or inferior, to me its ahead of the game with wireless optical drives, using older more obsolete machines to do its bidding. (except for the MP, which is the beast of them all) this laptop is the epitome of the basic college students needs in the apple realm. it has leopard, and all that OS's great features plus a bit extra.

Apple has made what any college student would need. the ability to do school work with internet, music videos all wrapped into a laptop,(when you wirelessly install word ofcourse. if it weren't for the fact that im blowing major money on the new mac pro... i would get one to replace this crappy vista laptop im on. or atleast get one for my gf. its a beautiful machine for people who don't care to upgrade.

quicksilver8478

Just utterly amazing. Just goes to show you that no matter what you put into text, people will read what they will :)

How about I try it again?
1) I think the MBA is too expensive
2) I don't think it's stupidly overpriced, just a bit overpriced.
3) yes, I know about the m1330. I was putting together one during the keynote just for such a spec comparison
4) I like apple. I would not call myself a fanboy, but for my particular work (network security in a heterogeneous environment), it seems to work the best. I still use windows, linux, and solaris pretty much on a daily basis.

I'm sure someone will read this and immediately think "riled up" or "a fanboi".

raleel

It's for the next version carbon-fiber "Code Name = Mircrotube Radar" that doesn't use an external disk drive but merely lets you hold up to four DVDs to the screen which after two seconds of parallel burning, releases the vacuum enough that you can lift the disk back off the screen. When you are not doing that, you use it to unglue your forehead from the screen to view the translucent 3D scan of your brain, in which tumors show up red, which is Apple's plan to get huge cuts from from the insurance industry and family planning clinics in China. That it sees through walls and dresses too, anywhere in a wirelessly interconnected city, well, that's more of a feature than a bug, eh? That iHealth will actually cure most diseases too, at a molecular scale will be announced next year. That the screen also acts as a solar panel, a 12 gigapixel camera in any wavelength, or a focused laser projector (or self-defense weapon) means that Apple will start to have some of it's patents classified by DARPA and we have to start waiting about 50 years for new feature to appear on the consumer market.

NikFromNYC

WOW! That's SO much cheaper! Just like you said!

The Dell M1330 doesn't come with any software for free, you have to buy it, so you should probably include that in your cost estimate. With Vista ultimate and anti spam protection, with a photo management program, a movie maker, music creation software... etc. It all adds up to a LOT more that 500$ less than the top end MBA, which comes with iLife '08.

The MBA is LESS expensive that a windows subnotebook after you buy all the extra software that is already bundled with the MBA.

@newgalactic: I don't know if it was quite riled up as much as it appears you think, but I am getting tired of the inappropriate comparisons to the MBA. Not that you said it, but the number of "I can get half a dozen EEE PCs!!" is amazing. Yes, you can... it's not even half the machine. It's more like 1/6th the machine :)

I just wish that folks would use accurate info on the thing. It's expensive, definitely. It's an ultraportable, and many don't have internal cd/dvd drives. Some do. There are totally valid comparisons to the MBA that are in the same class (13", 1.6-2.0Ghz dual processor, 64GB SSD or 80GB HDD, wifi) and make it look a little expensive.

As for the SSD, apple's are actually a bit overpriced compared to the ones you can put into a Dell, but no more than the normal apple premium ($1000 for apple, $900 for Dell). That might be in just how good a deal Apple can pull compared to Dell

I won't argue that the MBA is too much (I think it is, but not grossly so), and I think it's missing an exact niche. It's kind of for the business traveler, but not Apple's normal market. It's not a bad second computer for around the house, but very expensive for that. It's not a powerful graphics design workstation, so that's out. I was considering getting one myself, but I have a 15" MacBook Pro, and it's pretty decent... the only reason I would get one is that it's small and would fit better in coach :) But despite it's light weight, I'd end up with a usb ethernet dongle and the superdrive in a bag. The superdrive, you guessed it, weighs a near pound, and thus it's now in the realm of the cheaper 4 pounders that have built in drives, 3g, removable batteries and everything else just as good.

Hooray for the longest comment on giz ever

raleel

It's right now a question of scarcity, low yeilds and ramping up of manufacturing capacity. We'll see in a few months that the prices come down a fair bit -- thanks to Moore's law affecting all transistor-based devices. And that will make me very happy. In the meantime, as we've seen with the iPhone, being an early adopter comes with a steep price. I'm willing to wait.

Mandatory_Field

Side note, I truly believe that the Air is ahead of it's time. Apple removed floppy drives from it's computers long before the rest of the industry gave up on them but eventually everyone did and eventually, perhaps in 3-5 years, the majority of computers or at least laptops will be optical driveless.
I can definitely imagine having a home setup where all my computers share one wireless HD and data and all my media is digital.

perec

Thin + Wide = easy to break. I might prefer a laptop with a little more "junk in the trunk" to take the abuse that I may dish out.
