No, no, no. The Macbook Air isn't a fast sports car.

It's a roadster.

Small trunk, not huge power, style, "notice-me" top-down action, light on not-quite-every-day features that you still commonly want, and relatively high price.

It, like a roadster, is really only good if you have something else, like a hatchback, when you need to get real and do more than have basic fun.

I'd say that it's a match for that type of person (roadster owners, like me), but it's not small enough (thin isn't everything) for me, and it's not powerful enough to replace any of my other machines (can't burn blu-ray, slower proc, light on ports, etc.).

That is to say that, while this machine is not for me, Apple will sell buckets, and the first version will, as always, have hardware problems.

chaboud

Been waiting ages for a replacement for my 12" PBG4. Unfortunately, this isn't it. Can't even migrate directly from the 12"PBG4 because the MAX HD capacity is less than what's already in my PBG4. Couldn't even really keep my iPhoto and iTunes libraries on it and also find space for Parallels and Vista. This is a very cool iPod posing as a laptop. Heck, even iPods have more HDD space. I need a small, elegant but powerful laptop for real work.

There's still room in the MBP lineup for something like the MBA, but with dual drive bays (2x64GB SDD or even 80GB HDD for data + 64GB SDD for OS and apps would be do-able and cool), a graphics processor, swappable batteries and 3G modem. The 15" MBP is just too big to really use on the road comfortably. The MBP's are due for a redo soon anyway.

whibeyben

It is thin, and the screen looks nice, but I'm dubious about battery life with a battery that small. Also not being able to swap out a fresh one? Yikes... Also they do wear out and not being able to replace something which by it's size you should be able to mount on the case just doesn't add up.

Hello_Newman

Thanks for the photos and the vid. Now I really appreciate how thin this computer is. Some amazing engineering went into this. Unfortunately, the foot print is still too big for me. This thing will be difficult to use on the go in cramped spaces (in a car or on a plane). If only they made it with a 10" or 11" screen...

Been holding off my laptop upgrade waiting for a Mac Ultraportable. 13" is not ultraportable not matter how thin it is. It is a thin and light. Looks like I'm going with the Fujitsu P1620.

BTW, ultraportables are NOT desktop replacements. Many of you are comparing completely different categories of laptops. I use an ultraportable so I can travel fast and light. If you travel a lot you'll appreciate the weight savings and the flexibility to stuff your computer in any bag you want. When I want a big screen or to play games, I have a Quad core Shuttle XPC with a 8800GT sitting at home.

durian

This is for specific people.

If I was still in college I would love having something like this that I could take with me and take notes on, and check the internet. It could easily slip in a regular bag, be light, great.

I think it makes a great extra computer for people (richer ones) with desktops or just want something "simple" for class/coffee houses etc. It wouldn't cut it for storage/gaming/editing media...but people know that.

Daveed

OK OK, I think I finally get the purpose of the MBA. I didn't agree with the car analogies at first but I get it now. The MBA is a status symbol just like the fancy sports cars. Yes the cars go very very fast but will never really be driven as fast as they can go. They are just for show. The MBA is for show and will be bought by CEOs much like the ones I have worked for that use it only to get their email and check stock quotes. That is all it is good for but hey...you will always look super cool with your fancy and very thin email checker.

rednecktech

But you're not getting the point of my post. Most of the "different complaints" you see are mutually exclusive, hence there's no way you can satisfy all of them. Take that together with the fact that some people actually see the MBA as worthy of their money. What you should take away from that are two things:

(1) There is a market for this machine;
(2) You're not in it.

and leave it at that. Why continue to bitch and moan because of point #2? Do you do that for every machine that Apple releases?

The MacBook Air is not a desktop replacement. It's not for playing the latest video games or video editing. It's not for "l33t h4x0r5."

The MBA is targeted for the kind of person who already has a Mac Pro at home and makes $100 an hour. The international finance guy who lives on Long Island and takes the train to Manhattan every morning will buy this. The pharma executive who takes the BART to San Francisco will buy this. Japanese salarymen and chaps who work in The City will buy this.

They can work on business reports, spreadsheets, check e-mail, etc. while on the train. Then slip the MBA into their briefcase and walk wherever. When you're hauling it around all day, being light and able to fit in a manilla envelope (and thus a briefcase) is paramount.

Read the article again. I find Akiko's perspective fascinating myself. A Japanese PC user who is in love with the Panasonic Let's Note R3 (a TINY computer) and now is completely charmed by the Air. Her instinct -which I guess was a result of her own experience and the comments at the presentation- is that MacBook Air will become "the iPod" of portables, which already has become a noun in Japan.

What I find interesting about this is that, while we all westerners theorize about what's good, big, small and whatever, these guys in Japan have been chasing the portable Holy Grail for ages, with an obsession with light, thin and small. They know what's too small, too frail, too underpowered, too big or too heavy. And judging from the ooohs and aaahs in the video and her opinions, it seems to me like the Air may become a huge hit in Japan.

Now, I don't know if this will translate to the rest of the world. But for sure, it seems very interesting to me.

Jesus Diaz

@dearhaw: Normally, I wouldn't really care for changing batteries myself. I haven't even done this in my Macbook, and really, I probably never will until it's time to hand it down to someone else. What does concern me is one of those rare occasions when a laptop's battery goes kaput prematurely. My sister's Macbook has a dead battery (as indicated by the little X in the tool bar) and none of the emergency operations work. Since she'll still have to pay for the battery, since the warranty period is up, she's better off swapping it herself than handing it over and waiting for them to do it.

Kaiser-Machead's Chips Ahoy!

Then we agree regarding the optical drive (which some people just won't let go of ;-). I agree with you on RAM, don't agree with you on removable batteries. I've written this elsewhere, but in the past 10 years I've owned around 10 laptops, both Wintel and Apple. Never have I bought an extra battery, and never had I wanted one, knowing that I'd have to lug it around at all times because the only time I'd need it is in an emergency, and one thing about emergencies is that you can't predict when they'll happen.

Dearhaw

What some of you need to do is this. There are plenty of people complaining about this, that, or the other aspect of the MBA. But if you look at all the complaints, they're all different.

Some people say the CPU is underpowered, while other people, apparently, are OK with ULV 1.2GHz, so long as it's lighter. Some people say it could be another 1lb heavier, so long as it has an optical drive. Some people don't care about how crappy the keyboard is, so long as the footprint is the size of a paperback.

If Apple had chosen to go with any one of those, the rest of you still would be bitching about it to no end, because it doesn't suit your needs.

It's the same deal here. Yes, Apple sacrificed a lot of things to make the MBA. They had to in order to get it a certain way (weight, thickness, horse-power, battery life, etc.). They made choices based on market research and design philosophy. If it doesn't suit you, move on, and let the market decide if this is a winner or a loser. I would bet my money on it being a winner, but that's just me.

Dearhaw

True, the 8400 is not as big a step up as I'd like. But more than enough to play many games, i.e. WoW, Everquest 2, and others that I play regularly on my box. That's not really an option on the MBA. So no, it's no real comparison. And add the fact that the CPU on my SZ is much faster than the MBA, even the 3k .2GHz upgrade, and its more able to game than the MBA. That's not my primary purpose of this box, but that it's able to handle it is definitely a plus.

wraith808

They would have been able to maintain the same price, extend the battery life by at least an hour and taken some weight and height off it as well, which is unnecessary because it weighs 5 lbs and is 1.08" thick. What were they THINKING? And don't even think about comparing a Vaio SZ to the Air because the SZ is ten times the laptop the Air ever can be, despite its cosmetic design and size difference.

daftrok

In those places, you prob won't be watching movies but even if you wanted to, the no dvd/drive built in is not that big of a deal, you know you bittorrent/rip videos onto your laptop anyway. Also Apple's SSD price isn't that bad, it's $899 with the educational discount. A 64GB SSD from dell costs $950. If you don't want it, don't buy it.

Seriously, Macs never cease to impress me, but then, I never really stress a machine. To Huygir (sorry, not meaning to pick but), have you ever replaced or upgraded memory on a Mac? Compared to the same operation on a PC, it's a doddle. I turned to look at a Mac promo on a PC screen today while at my web designer's office. After watching for less than 30 seconds I turned back to a colleague who, in that time, had the keyboard from a 7 year old Mac notebook out and could well have upgraded or replaced the memory in that time, and had the keyboard back in place after doing so. I stand corrected if the current Mac Air doesn't have this ability too - I've not known Mac to make too many backward development steps.

random1970

It just drives me nuts that I have to choose between a $350 Eee or a $1800 MBA or other high-end ultra-portable, Where the hell are the $800-$1000 "mainstream" ultra-portables? I love the MBA. Everything on it is perfect except the price and maybe the screen resolution.

BadBoyNDSU

Aside from being thin, there is absolutely nothing compelling about the Air. And considering some of the serious quality issues in past MacBook releases I have to wonder if people plonking money down on the Air are suffering from some kind of memory impairment.

DrXym

At least they could've use a Vaio SZ Premium and not a Standard. The Premium series(and I have one) have the best of two worlds, they're fast and light and they're not so fat like the Standard model.

In my opinion the VAIO beats the Air in 80% of the features.

AC3
