@kodo: Yes. I didn't mean to suggest that Dell would end up donating more than Ben & Jerry. I was just comparing % of gross. Obviously this isn't on everything that Dell sells, only on these particular Red products, so even though it's a high-value product (one XPS system is equivalent to about 400 pints of ice cream) it's probably not going to amount to as much as 1% of all of the ice cream sold all the time.

weatherman

@weatherman: Actually the effectiveness is dependent largely on the product itself. Ben & Jerry's 1% may very well accrue more because the product (ice cream) is something that consumers purchase frequently and repeatedly over time. Even if that percentage amount doesn't initially seem very large, the longevity of the campaign and the wider consumer base will lend considerably larger gains. A computer has a more limited market - proportionally, there are significantly fewer people looking to buy a new computer. I do agree with you in that at least 5% is something.

kodo

@Lavallee017: microsoft really needs to. the RED iPod nano is selling like hotcakes, maybe a RED zune would put the zune back on the map. of course, so would making the zune a better-fit competitor to the iPod, but microsoft has its shortcomings. and im not an apple fanboy before anyone starts flaming, i have a PC and an xbox 360 i'm defintely not all that anti-MS.

and, that XPS one looks mighty good in red. dell just needs to hook us up with a matching multimedia keyboard and mouse, and it'll have the iMac beat in all corners of the ring except for the OS X diehards out there.

rimplestultskin

@kodo: marketing is everything. Running special campaigns boosts awareness and contributions far more than having a long, ongoing campaign. 5% of gross is actually a pretty good percentage - more than Ben and Jerry's donates in their 1% for peace program. And lest you forget, Dell is in the business of making money for shareholders. Sure, everyone could do more, but you have to give credit when someone does something other than criticize.

weatherman

@sisedi: Its entirely marketing. If a company was truly philanthropic they would offer to donate percentages of all products, not just off a special line. Furthermore, while I appreciate the initiative to contribute to such a worthy cause, they could be contributing significantly more than a meager 5% of each sale with this program. This is Dell and Microsoft we're talking about here. Its not like they can't afford 10% or more.

kodo
