still all I hear is that this laptop is sexy. I'm not sure about you guys, but it can't be sexy without breasts, nice legs and well I won't go there. The damn machine is too crippled and too expensive. it's target market is people who don't know what they're doing and have too much money. The first part there is in extreme excess these days, but those with too much money are hard to come by. appletv failed, their cube failed and i predict this will be their next failure.

dhaberer

@pomophobe: I know exactly what you mean. Form over function is just stupid.

I mean, you buy your trousers based on how waterproof they are, right? and your sneakers have a decent coefficient of friction?

Your choice of ideal Apple laptop is very sensible, but is 'sensible' how you want to be seen every time you get your laptop out in public? Why is everyone happy to base their choice of clothes/phone/watch/MP3 player on fashion, then purchase a tank of a laptop with no regard for image at all?

Well I don't mind admitting that when I purchase a laptop that will be seen by joe public every time I get it out, I base a big chunk of that decision on how it looks. When I need performance I use my desktop, but when I'm on a plane or a train or wherever, I'm grateful not to look like a nerd with a GHz fetish.

scuba_steve

the easiest Apple notebook to diassemble IMHO was the Pismo. Just pull the two little handles in the keyboard and you are looking right at the harddisk and the RAM. Pulling out the battery was just pulling a lever, pulling the disk module pulling the other lever.

And the 5300 and 190 had 5 screws. I know, I had both of them falling down and made one machine out of two, because everything except the motherboard was the same and one of the screens had cracked and the other's case also. And then a bit later I had to solder a fuse back on to the motherboard like 3 times a week. Ah - those were the times...

My PB 12", apart from its really nice specs and size, is a complete nightmare to work on. A friend of mine, a certified Apple technician, and a good one at that, needed about half an hour to swap out the HD and the stock disc drive. A-bloody-mazing. It's something in the vicinity of 30 screws and tabs and whatever.

yogibimbi

@aratuk: .. and maybe a firewire port, and a miniDVI on the side, and voila, you've got a MacBook! And magically, it costs $700 less and it's been available for quite some time. Apple already made that machine.

@yoyi2k: Now that you've even seen the inside, if you can't figure out why the battery is bolted in, I don't know how to get through to you.

@oudemia: 128GB SSD? Try almost $5000. People are in cognitive dissonance over how much solid state storage costs. They refuse to admit the shit is expensive and just whinge that Apple has a 64 GB option they can't afford.

To go from a 40GB 2.5" drive, Dell charges $600 to go to 32GB SSD, and $999 to go to a 64GB SSD. Dell actually charges MORE THAN APPLE for the part. Boom.

ludwigk

Man that thing is all battery! How come you guys didnt take out the system board? Come on you guys got it for free. lets see it all.

only 10 screws to take of the botton case. That is less screws than what it takes to take off the top cover on a MacBook pro, they have 17(15") 19(17") screws if you count the memory cover ones. But 9 screws to take out the battery?!? thats a little much. im glad its easy to get to the battery tho. not quite where the rest of the industry is, but for apple thats not bad.

j4sk868
