Meet the future. We call it a n-e-t-w-o-r-k.

This version had too many ports and that anchient throwback, the physical keyboard, but the one that came two models later got it right.

@x23: You must live in a MacWorld then with these millions of businessmen who rock older Mac notebooks despite the fact that Apple, even with their recent surge, only account for 2% of the market. Lenovo alone is responsible for more overall computers than Apple and dominate the business market. That is not even counting the big guns, HP and Dell.

The vast majority of Mac users are not professionals, just because you might work in an industry where they are popular doesnt change the fact that they are simply a blip on the radar and a non-issue in the business market.

Of course, it couldnt have been built for the business market. If it was then it was the stupidest execution ever. Not including a built-in ethernet. No real enterprise allows Wifi and relying on someone elses wifi when traveling is horrendously unsecure and usually unreliable too. So no WWAN kills it too.

Not having the built-in VGA is a big sign it wasnt targeted to professionals. I know most people on Giz dont see the point but anyone who is in sales or consulting will know immediately.

Then there is the built-in battery. Not being able to carry a backup is strike 3.

archercc

Apple just made some weird choices with the air, non-replaceable (without voiding your warranty) battery and no cd-r/dvd drive are bad enough. But 1 usb port? It should have at least 2 (how much weight could that really add?). It's like all other Apple products to me, pretty and shiny, but brings nothing new to the table (with exception of multi-touch) and severely overpriced.

And before all the fanbots point out the obvious, you're right, the air is defiantly not meant for me. I like to use more than one usb device and load software off a disc. I guess I'm just old-school.

RobotVampire

The location of the iPod is in the wrong place. It should be on the right side of the track pad so you can accidentally hit random buttons on it when you type. Also. the iPhone pad should be on the left side so you can use up minutes on it while your typing and listening to random songs. With the space between the USB and floppy, there should be an HDMI in and an HDMI out. The super drive should be either with a Blu-ray or HD DVD writer so that the other format can be on the other side next to the S-video, composite video, and a cable TV connector, phone (RJ-11) connector and all the card slots. As AMISHJOHN said, you could put in a scanner on the bottom so you could drag it over reports, and this could double as a punch card reader.

ManoaHI

Ok so now i have to carry around an extra Hub, and batteries for my fancy blue tooth mouse. Or is it the type of mouse with a charger, even better. Now i don't know much about USB hubs but suppose i want to run an external hard drive, does that mean i now need a powered hub? Awesome, I love carrying power bricks around.

It's not a ridiculous scenario. Some people like to have ports. Some people don't. Thats cool do what works for you.

Now I'm going to go add a USB expansion card or two to my PC so that i can run my mouse, 2 keyboards,3 mp3 players, an external hard drive, and my usb sex toy collection all at the same time. A hub would just be to damn convenient.

luciusad2004

here we go again with the MBA bitching again, after reading all these reviews i can't find one where they compare it to a subnotebook. People the MBA is not a laptop its a freaking subnotebook a entire different market. if your a laptop user it won't appeal to you, but if you just pay $2800 for a subnotebook from sony which comes with no optical drive ether, you will find the MBA to be a bargain and thats what apple is aiming at. and for the super drive to just cost $99 its really not that bad, try getting a USB drive for a subnotebook and you will see what am talking about, also the MBA has a 1.8Ghz core 2 duo chip, while most of the SNB have a 1.2Ghz chip

snitch29

4 USB ports on a laptop is just ridiculous (and I mean in real life, not in the Aircraft joke). It is a COMPLETE waste of space. The amount of people plugging more than 4 things in on the go has got to be exactly 27... the whole world has 27 of you.

Even if you can somehow think of some crazy "would never actually happen in real life" scenario where you need that many USB gizmos at once, why the hell wouldn't you be using a USB hub? Even if my computer had 22 USB ports, I would still be using a hub so I wasn't plugging things in and out one by one all the time like a moron.... I'd keep them all pre-plugged into the hub and just plug in the hub.

I'd also like to point out that the Macbook Air is the Xbox 360 of laptops it can do pretty much whatever you want as long as you are willing to pay for an extra, dongle, adapter, or online service. Oh the irony...

Padriac

Its 1"x11.6"x8.5". Its actaully smaller than the air and has a swappable battery (with 4, 6, and 9 cell options no less), PC card slot, SD reader, VGA out, 3 USB, gigabit ethernet, modem, firewire, and IR.

It also drops into a dock and in just a couple seconds recognizes all the ports and devices connected, including two 22" external monitors (yep, dock has one DVI-D and a VGA) and a drive.

All for only .24" thicker but still smaller footprint and same weight (if I dont put the giant 7 hour battery in).

I guess the one thing he Air has that might justify the extra couple hundred bucks is the LED display. I wish I had that but only really for battery life. Ive never felt my laptop to be too thick.

archercc
