So the reporters didn't understand everything Forest was saying well enough to condense it into an accurate 30 second sound bite. If they could understand the science, they would be doing something other than holding a microphone. Also, there were multiple reporters interviewing him at the same time adding to the media confusion. He answered the questions they asked. And he shared the fun with the whole world, just because the whole world asked to look over his fence.

He never said he invented the snow machine or the air compressor, or the pressure washer, or the internet.

He asked a scientific question and kept working till he got an answer. He learned a lot about vapor clouds,copper pipe, teflon tape, and the media. I'm proud of him.

And finally, life IS like an molecular process. This media minute caused a lot of enery and excitement. Our family got to see how the human element reacted. Looks like most of you atoms are positively charged. Thanks for the kind comments. For you few negative atoms...sorry for you.

We supported this venture because we live in an area where you have to pay hundreds of dollars to the local public school for "enrichment" classes if you want your child educated in science. And frankly the "enrichment" classes aren't a lot of bang for your buck when you have a child who really loves science. How many times can you "make slime" and find it exciting? For goodness sake, in China the kids are memorizing Pi in kindergarten!

And yes, life is like a molecular process. This story initiated a lot of energy and motion. And the coverage has given our family a glimpse into the human element and how it reacts. Some of you atoms are definately negatively charged. Sorry for you.

Just an FYI, the West side of Oregon(west of the cascades) has very awkward weather. We typically see rain or cold weather, rarely do both combine to dump much snow. Last year was a "huge" year and i think we only got a foot or two that lasted for like 3 days before it melted.

We do usually have very cold winters though such as this year where a machine like this would work perfectly. The cold air usually comes from up north in Canada/Alaska, usually keeping the rain clouds from the ocean away.

Now YOU sound retarded. The earth is not a closed system. Take a look at the WP article on Venus - it clearly states that water had disassociated and the hydrogen had escaped into space. Or check the USGS page on where water is located, and it states a theory that water was collected on earth over billions of years by comets. A UC study describes hydrogen as escaping the earth as a supersonic planetary wind. Not to mention NASA has a news article on sun spots, which states that the sun bombards the earth with hydrogen atoms. Best info is from this forum post:

"I did find many references stating that hydrogen does escape, most assuming this starts with the solar radiation separation of hydrogen from largely water vapor and methane in the stratosphere; with the separated Oxygen and Carbon combining into CO2."

So it sounds pretty clear that hydrogen (which makes up 0.000055% of the earth's atmosphere) regularly comes in and out. Since hydrogen is a necessary part of water, and sources indicate water gets broken up into hydrogen/oxygen regularly, it stands to reason that there has not "been the same amount of water on the earth or in it's atmosphere since the dawn of time".

That's pretty presumptuous. There has been the same amount of water on the earth or in it's atmosphere since the dawn of time. The only difference is how much is clean and accessible. If this kid lives in one of those places in the mid-west that draws their water from underground aquifers that take eons to refill, you might have a valid arguement. Or he could have a water supply like mine. I have a well that draws from a high water table and is close to multiple fresh water supplies. Any water I put in my yard goes right back to the water table in very short time. As long as I don't add pollutants back into the ground water, I have no need for guilt over using as much water as I please. I can reuse the same water next year.

Where I live, if it snows, it's not much, and then it melts. Whenever it's cold for a long stretch, it doesn't snow.

True snowmakers at ski resorts use the exact same principle on a much larger scale. Reservoir ponds hold water that is pumped into a pumphouse where industrial compressors force the water into an infrastructure of pipe laid out across the mountain. Sprayers are connected to the standpipes and mix the compressed water with air and spray it onto the trails. Some resorts use an additive in the water to help make snow at higher temperatures. Some of the new equipment being used also allows the spray heads to be mounted on a snowcat or groomer to specifically direct the snow, such as in the case of developing a terrain park's various features. Nay-sayers: he's a kid and what he did is fantastic. Hell, most adults couldn't pull this off. So mom ain't the brightest bulb in the chandelier, she's smart enough to know she's got a smart kid and let's him use his brains and play. That makes her a winner. (On the other hand, I do hope she keeps an active eye on him when he's being creative. He could get into dangerous stuff.)

I work on a ski hill. The only difference between what this kid did and a "real" snow machine is the lack of a fan.

This is exactly how an on-hill snow machine works. The dirrence is that on the hill, they blow th mist through a fan so it will cover a huge area

This, however, is much cheaper. But it does seem kind of silly, since it will only work in places it's likely to snow anyways. BUT mad props to the kid.

And for the record, I was walking a mile and a half through the woods to the neighbors house daily to shovel their horse shit for peanuts when I was 10 so i could buy fireworks, disassemble them and make things that really blew shit up.

I think it's pretty cool that a 10-yo kid gets to play with this kind of gear and builds this. I don't care if it's water droplets frozen by outside temperature. It works and he did it in his backyard. He may not end at the MIT, but sure he has more possibilities than his fellow 10-yo playing WOW all day long or watching Cartman playing WOW all day long.
