Considering the music industries stance on anything digital I find the whole affair unbelievable but even at that downloaded the client to mess around.
No downloads worked and the client was less than impressive. Will be fun to see how this flushes out in the coming days.

This makes for very interesting news, considering Xtrax was basically promoted through a country-wide prime-time news report here in Australia over the weekend, again saying it was signed with the four major studios with 25m songs.

Either they're trying to generate a spike in traffic to get a month's pay off the few ad views users will get trying to see what they can download or they're trying to force record labels' hands and pressure them to join up because the consumers have been told it'd be there.

For legal, free downloads; there's always SpiralFrog. Yeah... it's a HUGE pain in the ass to navigate and use. Yeah... they nag you to sign back into the website at least once a month so that your stuff will still work. Sure the selections are not everwhelming. But it does have good quality mp3's and videos that are both free and legal. Hooray to SpriralFrog for trying something new!

Not huge news, but I've been following this pretty closely, and it seems that a few people claim to have downloaded the client. (Some say through an email link they signed up for.) But apparently, the software just says downloads are coming soon. Has anyone actually downloaded the software? Because thats a big step in proving that this may actually happen...

If the only DRM embedded in each song is just a way to tally how many times it was played so the artists can be compensated, then it sounds like a pretty cool deal.

Provided, of course, if the files are encoded above 128k (I'm a snob and can tell the difference!) and we aren't locked into any particular hardware or software for playback.
