First off, I think this is a great idea and I'm looking forward to buying it.

What I think they need to make this successful is...
1. Licenses for popular songs. Even if they are played be the original artists, at least something that sounds close is good enough.
2. The ability to import your own creations. Whether it's a song you've created or recreated from another artist, the ability to play songs is what will keep interest.
3. Marketing. If this proves to be, not only a fun game but also a great teaching tool, you have more of a market to sell to.
4. A better interface. The interface now seems more like a teaching tool. If I learn a song, I want to rock out in front of a crowd. I think one of the best things about Rock band, other than being able to play with others, is when the crowd seems to get into it when I'm doing well.

BTW: I'm not getting all of you who pan Guitar Hero or Rock band. I play guitar and I love those games, so why would you discount them. Look at your shelf of games. Are you a race car drivers, a pro football players, or WWII veteran? If not, then I suggest you throw out all of those games because it ain't the real experience.
If you're getting grief from ones of these musicians, have them pick up the fisher price special and see how well they do. It's a skill a real guitar player will have to also master. You'll just have to decide if you want to stoop to their level.

Justin_Payne

GH nd Rock band are merely for entertainment. Talk about great family games. For relatively peanuts you can get the whole familt involved.

Self proclaimed purists look down on the guitar hero and rockband style games, for whatever reason.

First as many have said its a game. But Ihave to admit it is a whole lot of fun playing some of my favorite songs when I was a kid against my son.
The songs in these games are refreshing because they are actual music not this computer generated crap with abnoxious bass thumps.
There will be a lot of people that will want to move tothe next step and play a real instrument. This will bring more respect to the Arts in school systems,
I am actually and avid drummer and can't wait to see whats in store for roland in the future.
GH is a game, try it with a group of friends, a little beer and have some fun. As stupid as it may seem with a group of friends it is a lot of fun.
But beware little kids will kick yor butt..

bruinsrme

@salviati_returns: I totally agree. Sometimes it's just having instruments lying around for a kid to mess with. My family is tone deaf, but when I was 3 years old we lived in a rented house that had a piano. When my parents played records I started to pick out the melodies on the piano. Most importantly, there wasn't any pressure & it was always fun. These games would probably have a similar effect.

johnnyabnormal

Honestly, I picked up a guitar at one point. Played for about 6 months and played quite a bit. But I got bored with it, precisely because I hit a limit on what I could play, which was very little and what I couldnt. If something like Rock Band existed when i was a young kid (<10), I'm 32 now, there is no doubt I would be playing drums and be damn good at it. Same is true for Guitar Rising, though we shall see how good the game turns out to be. I think anyone who plays music, particularly rock-based music, should look at these things as great training tools, which they no doubt are. Come 10 years time, there will be a generation of musicians that got their inspiration to pick up instruments from these games. Frankly, I think thats a damn good thing.

salviati_returns

@salviati_returns: Well, I've been playing guitar for 23 years of 33. Have I ever played guitar hero? Nope. I'd try given the opportunity though! F@*k it. Looks fun. I'd never piss on anyone for having fun playing a game like that. I saved up for college in high school teaching guitar, bass and drums...that probably made me very sympathetic to anyone aspiring to have fun through music. At one point, I had about 16 students a week...it was nuts. Age was a big factor. The younger the student the more adaptable they seemed. I had a 40 year old guy who spent a whole year trying to play one Led Zep song and a 8 year old who picked up jazz standards easier than most people pick their nose.

@spaceman7: Beck is my hero, for sure. I did an Adidas spot a little while back that was very influenced by Ode-lay and the soundtrack from "Repo Man":

One of the things I have always found frustrating about learning an instrument is the social grouping of people who play instruments. By and large they are pretentious pricks. If a simple Math game was developed, there would not be a single mathematician who would be disappointed because the game didn't use epsilon, sigma proofs. When was the last time you heard a physicist complain about the lack of realism in the physics of gaming. In no other field of interest would there be so much outrage from such mediocre circles. Only musicians, and its strictly a function of the status of rock music in popular culture, which thankfully is dying. Good riddance.
As for me, Guitar Hero/Rock Band has gotten me interested in learning how to play both guitar and drums. It has also opened the doors for games like Guitar Rising which will undoubtedly expand the community of musicians beyond this obnoxious class of douchebags.

salviati_returns

@johnnyabnormal: I'm also a musician.

I know exactly what you mean about allowing your hands to lead your head, and fight against it as well. While sometimes I'll use a keyboard as a keyboard, sometimes I'll use it the way other people use the matrix editor, solely for inputting notes and manipulating data (and sometimes in conjunction with my computer keyboard). It's like I switch from mindset to mindset depending on what I'm doing - thinking of the keyboard as a keyboard, using it to input traditional notation if it's for other instruments, using it to trigger virtual instruments, or using it to translate abstract ideas in my head into computery goodness.
I might use the now cheesily-named "piano roll" mode in Logic more if I was better at it, but since I can input notes so quickly with a keyboard, I can never get into it except for editing note lengths and things like that.

frigg

I composed almost a album's worth of stuff in that style back then...one song was pretty aggressive and I cracked a thumbnail the whole length of the nail bed. That wasn't very fun. I did see Michael perform once and it was really nice to see that I got most of his songs right. I was very curious, because we all know you can play the same thing so many different ways.

@frigg: Yeah, I've always loved when cellists do a descending line like that and crescendo on the low note. I couldn't resist ripping that style. Yes, I was using Logic Pro 8 in the matrix window...I hate that they call it "piano roll" now. Sounds so cheesy. I'm a pretty decent keyboardist too, but honestly, it's sometimes better for me not to use it. Why? I'd rather hear it my head first than let my keyboard influence things. I know that probably sounds weird, but sometimes I feel it gets in the way. You guessed right on the hermitdom, but it can have a price. Insomnia can be one.

@johnnyabnormal: Nice ditty! I like your toying with the lowest note on the cello. Because cellists are so wierdly fond of playing that note, it gives it added realism.

Are you using the matrix editor in Logic?
I'm always amazed at how people can master visual representations of music like the matrix editor for entering notes. It's like otherwise chill musicians become fierce terminators of discipline when it comes to mousing in notes with visual representations.
Because I'm fluent on keyboard, I use that as my input mode of choice, and only use something like the matrix for editing.
Anyway, congrats on your hermitdom, in the music world, a sign of being in demand and successful!

frigg

@HeartBurnKid: I'm not surprised. While a lot of the physical skills are similar, if I actually knew how to play, that would completely distract me. Its why I struggle at karaoke revolution. I want to SING the song, rather than play the game. While that's not a major problem there, I totally know the feeling of wanting to take a song a little differently and struggling with performing it the "right" way. I can only imagine that gets worse when what you are doing is only a representation of playing.

My girlfriend is a flutist, though, and the fast fingering poses her no problems as a result. Her only problem is picking up the guitar part since its very different from flute parts, oddly enough. Getting into the groove seems easier for me as a singer, though I have a hard time with the physical techniques that she mastered quickly.

BStu

@MilktruckHeist: "@frigg: you realize there are like 20 frets on the guitar with only six strings right?"
Yes! But limiting 20 frets to 6 strings simplifies the gaming aspect of it and makes it easier to link a flashing light on a fret on a string to a musical note. It's like built in organization. Players grasp the concept physically and musically, so it's easier to link the flashing lights with a note and a physical action. It also seems easier to ramp up from the game to a real guitar than the same system on a keyboard.
On a keyboard where there's 88 notes not subdivided into subsets (I wouldn't consider black and white notes subsets), it seems harder from a gaming and musical perspective to make sense out of a bunch of flashing lights.

I know Yamaha has some keyboards that include lights that flash under the keys to drag you along prerecorded songs (in MIDI), but it doesn't seems as visceral or fun as the guitar equivalents.
Maybe a minority report style glove would be the answer for a decent keyboard gaming system and one that could similarly act as a gateway drug to a full blown instrument.

frigg

Its just a game. If it makes you feel better, its an AIR GUITAR simulator, not a guitar simulator. Even if it was, its just a video game. Playing video games doesn't mean that you ought to be out doing whatever it is in the video game. I don't want to race cars. I don't want to fly planes. I don't want to fight in World War II. I don't want to be a professional wrestler. I don't want to roll up the planet Earth so I can make a new star. I just want to play a game without having people constantly nitpick about why I'm not doing the real thing.

The real thing is cool. Guitar Hero has made me appreciate guitar rock MUCH more than I used to. I'd like to learn guitar, but I have neither the time, use, or finger length to dedicate myself to the effort. That's okay, too. I'm sure this program is very cool for people who are learning guitar, just stop bemoaning the fact that people playing a video game aren't among them.

@GUNNK: doesn't your amp have an effects loop or a tuner output? Either of those should be sufficient for running your guitar through your amp first and then into the game interface. I'd say you probably don't want an amplified signal going into the game, so I wouldn't use the direct out that's used for recording, but both the effects loop and tuner output should be un-amplified signal essentially straight from your guitar.

Anyway, this thing looks awesome...I hope they'll have some stuff beyond what guitar hero does. I'd like to see a scales drill at the very least...if you're learning guitar, you need to learn scales :)

phreack

There's obviously a large number of people who think like Jesus.

What I don't understand is why so many people think that a game should be turned into an effort to learn to master an instrument.

You can pick up GH or RB and get rocking day 1 with absolutely no musical background. The fans go wild, the game makes you feel like you are creating some great music. It's a game, and it's fun.

If you want to learn to play a guitar, by all means go do it. If you want to turn learning a muscial instrument into a long and grueling "game" then by all means enjoy, sounds like a great way for folks to get started.

But is it really so hard to understand that not all gamers want to be real guitar players?

OldSchoolGadgetLover

@ludwigk: It doesn't work for piano like it works for guitar since the guitar is limited to 6 strings (or sets) to be targets for individual fingers/notes, while the piano has 1 set of 88 "strings"/notes to be targets. From a game perspective, targeting flashing lights on a piano is more like shooting fish in a lake vs. the guitar's shooting fish in a barrel. I'm not sure what the model would be for gaming on a piano keyboard, but this isn't it.

frigg

I knew guitar hero was going to drastically inflate the (already staggering) number of guitarists in our generation, and I'm ecstatic to see this next step in that process. I disagree with those who say that gh doesn't help you learn guitar; for one thing it clearly helps develop the strength, coordination, and timing of your fingers. But most importantly, it gives you the confidence to continue, which is really the only factor that matters in the end. You can do whatever you do do; many in our generation don't understand this because our schools and talk shows have spent so much time saying idiotic things like "what do you want to be when you grow up" or "are you a musician?" to which the simplest, safest response is often "no". The truth is that words like musician and artist are synonyms for human, and everyone should be encouraged to spend time every day developing these skills.

schwabsauce

It is not, nor ever was a trainer, a simulator, or any other type of tool. It is a game. I play it and enjoy it. I don't get all bent out of shape because the scale of the guitar is right, or that my fake Les Paul has a tremelo.

I have no false aspirations about being a rock god, or think that my skill (or lack therof) in the game has anything to do with musical talent.

Sometimes I think I'm the only person that feels this way.

Lizard_King

The other advantage of learning guitar this way is that you can pick out the easiest combination of notes to muddle through a song, like easy in guitar hero. That way, you feel like you're accomplishing something (even though the song would be unrecognizable to anyone listening to only your guitar)

Then, you can slowly build up to playing 50%, 80%, whatever of the notes in the song as you progress. It doesn't make learning any easier, but it can make it a little more gratifying. Which, for a lot of people, is a big barrier to entry.

m4ximusprim3

Guitar hero is fun because I can play things that are outside of my ability, with all the pay off of playing it right with a real band (well, not all...but it's fun anyway)

Rock Band is fun because it turns my non-musician family into a band. It's always fun to play music with people, this gives them the opportunity to be able to participate in that.

@dqkennard: true, those "gadgets" have been around for years. If you are at all serious about learning guitar, you will dig into books, take lessons from a master, or simply just practice. The only gadgets I have ever really needed were Mel Bay/Hal Leonard books, guitar and a transistor radio. And above everything, developing your ear is the most fundamental piece to music. Average hobbiests will never develop this with silly video games, but its a start, a small start that is.

cjpnyc

Slap multi-colored stickers on the first five frets of a guitar, and number the dots coming down the screen in Guitar Hero, and you've got a learning tool. Yes, it takes a little more technique because you've got to get used to holding your fingers for correct intonation instead of slapping down buttons, and yes, you have six "flippers" instead of one, but by the time you're up to "Hard" on Guitar Hero, surely you're competent enough to work patterns vertically as well as horizontally.

Learning those first five frets gives you multiple scales and all the chords in first position. You won't be a guitar expert, but you'd be competent enough to fake through most tunes.

So, maybe it's six times as hard, but I'll contest that it's 100 times more likely to get you laid.

jetexas

I hadn't touched my guitar for about a year (with special thanks to moving/getting married/etc etc etc... hooray for growing up! :p) but i had gotten some GH time in during that time. I snagged my axe and realized my fingers were moving faster. Twas a fun realization :) (it was really sad though that i hadn't touched my fender in a year... and i've been playing since 1990. Luckily, after that much playing and a short break, its just like riding a bike :)

I will buy this if it comes out but I have my doubts. First of all I think it will be insanely hard, what kind of notation/tab will they use? Trying to keep up will be a problem of it's own and playing without looking at your left hand is far from easy (or even advisable) for a beginner.

So I think the difficulty and the need for A. a guitar and B. a way to plug it into your PC will limit the potential sales of this which in turn will limit the songs they can license and the effort they can put into producing them to the standard that we're used to from Guitar Hero.

So I think it's likely to be "On Top of Old Smokey" and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" but I still want it.

BCThunderthud

Which is why I predict that this product will be no more (or less) successful than the usual crop of "new way to make learning an instrument easy and fun!" products. That is to say, it'll pick up a small market. It misses the entire point of GH's popularity- accessibility. Anyone can pick up a GH guitar and play the game; from there it's all timing.
With solid state amps you could just go headphone out to USB to get the tone into the computer. Don't know if your tube amp has that option.
