This is the best system ever!My 3 year old knows every letter, what sound it makes and can give a word that starts with that letter from this system, and he learned it in a week and a half.It also got my 5 y/o nephew reading at a grade 6 level. If you have kids this is awesome!

2legit

The DS has almost no educational games for 4-6 year olds while the leapfrog has over 20. It's not a matter of can these kids handle a ds, it's whether they should. mindless game play vs. educational games that kids will find fun. most pre-school parents would choose the latter, there is plenty of time later for the former.

leapsters biggest drawback is really crappy graphics though, no excuse for this.

bridonohue

I am a parent of a 4 y/o girl and an 8 y/o boy...

I have all 3 "Next-Gen" Consoles and both Handhelds...

My son loves his DS, but he also loves his Leapster.

HIRED_GEEK I am guessing you do not have kids because the Leapster has been one of the more popular toys for kids for about 6 years now...

My daughter has a DS and she is more interested in playing with her Leapster, because unlike the DS these games are designed for kids ONLY, they do not have to worry about the 10 y/o+ crowd...

This things "Prints Money" maybe not to the same scale as the DS but these things sell like crazy!

trevscofield

The Didj totally reminds me on the N-Gage, which is no good thing. Considering the fact that the DS is so popular, why not stick these kinds of budget edu-games and cheesy franchise games that kids supposedly like on the DS as save the cost of launching a pretty useless handheld that will probably only have 2 years max life span in it....

hired_geek

P.S. It would be great if these companies followed Apple's lead on how to use their web site for marketing/selling. Here you have a great announcement about some upcoming stuff - too far off to be of any real value to consumers (if it was a Christmas release, maybe it would be different). If you go to LeapFrog now and look for "Didj", what do you think you'll find? Anyone?

huygir

The difference will be what it always is - the games. There is a dearth of truly educational games on the mainstream gaming platforms - they don't sell to the "older" gamers. The Leapsters et al are a value-added entry in the gaming space for that sole reason.

My 4-yr-old daughter plays almost everything on a regular basis - leapster, VSmile, GBA, DS, Wii, GameCube, 360, PC and a bunch of those single game joysticks you plug right into the TV - anything that's fun. She can have as much fun on her "educational preschool" games as on the more difficult puzzle, action, party games (she doesn't do FPS yet :-).

Frankly, I think my kid has learned as much from the "right" games as from any other venue. Preschool kind of takes it slow (if you have kids, you know what I mean), but kids can learn some things much faster with the right motivation. My kid loves games, so I'll get her anything that provides good games - ESPECIALLY if they are fun games that will actually help her learn.

huygir

My kids are 11, 7, and damn near 4. I would jump on these things, but only because I know Leapfrog is generally cheaper than xbox games. BUT....I'd have to tear my kids away from COD4 and RockBand, so it looks like this is another good edu-taining toy that will stay on the shelf at the store.

faabshaam

I think the target market is parents who don't want their kids to be able to play PSP/DS games (ie only educational games), but don't want them to feel like complete dorks either.

My son, who is 4, has taken my PSP and plays it daily. I am not certain I understand the need for a different platform for educational games, especially since this looks so similar in design to the PSP anyway. They really should be focusing on making more education-oriented titles for the Nintendo DS and PSP.

Monty
