OMG! I know the real story! The bomber is just a decoy! Makes a loud noise while a rogue killer-robot runs over people! Damn those fundamentalist-robots! Hope there's a war on robots soon, at least lable them terrorists or something so they don't get equal rights in courts and stuff. We'll robo-profile them as we walk on the streets and may as well assume that they all run over people. Robots and their running-over people ways...

zarchitect

@quendiljt: What it should come across as is a more critical view of what happens to human bodies after death. And is it really okay to run over a body? to make sure what? it is a random action, what would happen if there was another bomb that detonated because of that act, would more loss of life be validated?

Just use the machine in a slightly different manner instead, and place all suspicious remains into a bomb disposal container.

I can't hate for the person that killed themselves and many others around them, they don't know what they are doing, but I find hate for those that convinced this person to do so. They're still alive, convincing someone else to do the exact same thing.

Is there any information that suggests the places bombed in the past have tried to heal the area? by placing signs everywhere saying that suicide is not the path to heaven, to rest in peace, to letting your family escape poverty?

It seems to follow the same cycle, military action over there, suicide bomb over here, military action over here, suicide bomb over there, ad nauseum, families are broken, hate grows, retaliations, and so on.

To explain a little further about the person committing suicide not knowing what they are doing, they are surrounded by people of their own origins when entering these areas, yet they still end up committing suicide.

skulldriveshaft

I saw the first picture and I thought it was a wee bit disrespectful for the robot to prodding the dead guy. Then I read it was the bomber and was wishing there was a knife at the end of that robot arm and they were just filling him with holes to make sure he was indeed dead. Then I scrolled down to the second photo and burst out laughing so hard diet coke came out my nose! Tell me that wasn't intentional that the Israeli police were driving all over that dead scumbag. Funnies thing I've seen all week. It should be on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me!

Calistograph

if cellphones weren't made to resemble communicators, if people didn't dress up their cars to look like starfighters, if there hadn't been a space shuttle named enterprise, maybe you'd have a point. the visionary quality of a lot of sci-fi drives innovation in the present day. shakespeare and jane austen didn't write about robots. isaac asimov did.

dave the wet sprocket

@Brian Lam: Of course, I disagree. Posting the picture of a dead body on what amounts to the front page amounts to negligence. I understand that you wish to support your friend in this, especially since you posted the same image (albeit much smaller) on this article. However, just like images that contain images of naked people, that NSFW image should have been left for after the jump, with a proper warning (which was not included initially). I'm not advocating the suppression of the picture, I'm merely pointing out that the image could be easily considered NSFW. Perhaps your work environment is more forgiving, but not everyone's.

Secondly, if Annalee is such an absolute amazing pro, then why do her reports frequently contain her own speculation and sensationalism? In some cases, reading her listed source material demonstrates how far she is from the facts of a story. Sorry, but her other accomplishments do not make up for this. I'm not saying that she's a bad person, but her reporting could use some work.

Yes, to you I am "just some commenter on the internet." To me, Annalee is "just some commenter on the internet." As a free thinking person, I have every right to question whatever I please, whether you like it or not. As an objective viewer, I questioned her work, which is also my right. Sure, I think that she can do better. You say that she can do better. So, instead of trying to flame me for pointing out that Annalee's not living up to her potential, why don't you go help her?

Oh, by the way, have you even considered asking what the article had to do with Science Fiction? After all, isn't that supposed to be the focus of io9? I've noticed that many of the articles (hers included) have absolutely nothing to do with sci-fi, and probably belong elsewhere. Maybe Wired?

PantherShade

@Lam:

My point was that words like "worst" and "candy coated" aren't journalistic; they imply subjectivity or value judgments. I suppose you could argue that Gizmodo is a blog and not meant as journalism, but there are moments journalistic standards would benefit, and this is one of them.

I understand why you posted it, and I saw Io9's comments. Some of the comments were disgusting. Some here ("not new," for one) were, as well.

I think posts like this are valuable and belong on Gizmodo every bit as much as computer/gadget technology. But words like "worst" and "candy coated", i.e., value judgments, don't belong in posts like this.

Hope that clarifies my point. Keep up the good work.

willentrekin

So... rather than jostle the body as much as necessary to ensure that there's no unexploded ordinance, we should just have people go in there and hope for the best? Is that really what you're saying, MACPollo?

This is the reality of the Middle East. I don't care what side you're on. This is what all sides have brought themselves to, whether wilfully, through self-defense, trickery... this is not a statement about who's right or who's wrong. This is a statement about what's really happening, and how important it is to see it for what it truly is.

It's called perspective, and hearing 10 second sound bites while watching Palestinians shout angry slogans in a language the majority of us can't understand will never deliver the same impact as those pictures. The same people angry at this are the same people who would have been angry at the image of Phan Thị Kim Phúc. That's real, and something like that will drive the horrors of reality home like no amount of words ever can.

If all you can do is scream, shout, and belittle people who try to show you what real life is... shame on you for being so willing to keep your blinders on.

Sqube

Annalee @ io9 has major issues when it comes to actual reporting. She has the annoying tendencey to sensationalize headlines and report her own speculation as if it were fact. When one actually reads the links she includes, her erroneous inclusions of personal speculation become overly apparent. It is obvious to many readers that she does not know her subject matter and does not bother to read the actual stories on which she reports. :(

Furthermore, posting the picture of a human corpse on the front page (even worse than the addition pictures with no warning) demonstrates a lack of empathy as well as negligence of journalistic integrity. >:(

PantherShade

I think the most upsetting thing about her report was how blatantly wrong she was in her facts. The Bomber was the second Bomber in a suicide team. The first bomber killed himself and this guy was knocked unconscious. When the rescue personnel arrived this guy then tried to detonate his bomb repeatedly. He was then shot by a quick thinking policeman who risked his own life because if the bomb had gone off he would have been killed. The Report called him an "alleged bomber" she never mentioned that he was the second of two bombers, or that he had tried to kill the rescue personnel who were there to save lives. The Bomb disposal squad was not concerned about respecting his corpse, especially since he was not concerned with killing innocent women and children. If you have a political agenda leave it at the door. She is supposed to be a reporter. Reporters report the news. They don't need to spin it to display their own personal biases. She stopped being a reporter when she stopped being objective and at that point became an ally of the bomber.

BrianLocke

Before this degenerates into a pro/anti Iraq flame war, I'd like to say a few things.

1. However loosely related to gagetry, it is still related and I am glad to have seen the links to a story I likely would have otherwise missed.

2. The main difference between Terrorists (rebels, freedom fighters or whatever the current PC term is) and the military forces of most of the world is that Terrorists intentionally target innocent civilians. The military attacks targets of war and occasionally there is collateral damage.

3. Because of this dedication to keeping civilians as safe as possible most military forces world-wide are creating and inventing more accurate and safe weapons (the Gauss gun reported about last week is a good example of this)

4. People who villify the robot's handler of not being respectful to a dead body need to be reminded that booby-trapping is not a new idea. As just one example, in Vietnam, some Vietnamese soldiers would attach their weapon to a grenade's pin and then run directly at the enemy. that way when their weapon was pulled from their dead hands, they'd take out more of their enemy. These same tactics are being used. One bomber walks into a coffee shop. when a crowd of hundreds gathers, a second bomber comes along and bats cleanup.

5. These tactics (suicide bombing) have been going on for decades in the middle east and the presence of a military force is not the cause, but simply the currently convenient reason.

Don't take #5 to mean that I support or do not support the US being in Iraq, it's simply stating a fact.

Magiksreal

Hey Brian - maybe your life is Candy-Assed, I mean Coated, but there are lots of Americans in Iraq, as well as Americans, Brits, Canadians and Dutch is Afghanistan dealing with this sort of thing on a daily basis. Most of those troops are younger than the bulk of the commenters on this Blog and they go out every day facing danger and making split-second, life or death decisions.

Anyway, great video - it is interesting to see the use of the robot in saving lives, and to me the would-be bomber gave up any claim to hummanity the day he strapped on that bonb with the intent of blowing up women and children. It would only have been better if they had smeared bacon fat on the treads first.

Canoehead

There are two sides to the whole "terrorist suicide bomber as coward" aspect. On the one hand, it's an enormously brave act to knowingly detonate explosives strapped to your body, willingly sacrificing your life in the name of your cause. Sure, you can say that these fanatics fervently believe they will get their reward in the afterlife (promises of virgins, for example), and so they aren't really all that brave...but in the moment of truth, most people quail at the notion of extinguishing their life, and to overcome their self-preservation instinct is never an easy task.

On the other hand, while it may be personally brave to do such a thing, it is an overall cowardly act because they're engaging in a militaristic campaign against people who are not directly involved in their cause, and who are not given a chance to defend themselves. I find it dishonorable.

Barion

I think the story is that there were 2 bombers and the first one blew himself up and happened to almost take out the 2nd bomber. The paramedics were working on him when the realized he was actually another bomber and they all cleared out. Then he started fumbling for the switch and they had to put him down basically.

No, seriously, why are these here? As an Israeli, I can tell you those robots aren't really new(there are constant revisions, and very specific bots for specific tasks) and niether is their use, or frequence of use. So if nothing really changed, why now? Because some blogger posted pics? okay, understandable, but as a gadget blog, can we atlast focus on the bot a bit? Something more than "blah blah blah drama, blah blah blah Americans suck. Oh, and there a robot".

I do appreciate the fact that a huge flame war was not dragged out because Israel was mentioned, which is what usually happens...

Metacore

This must be the second bomber, who was shot by the quick-thinking police officer before he was able to detonate his bomb. Bottom line here is that the real act of inhumanity is the terrorist's decision that their warped political cause is more important than the lives of random innocent people who are out shopping for groceries. How anyone could criticise the important work of making sure there are no live explosives is really beyond me. You are upset by the work of the safety robot? Why aren't people outraged by the acts of terror, the daily child abuse by people who teach their children nothing but hatred, and then send them on suicide missions as teenagers. Or those who send mentally disabled, Downs-Syndrome women into markets with bomb vests rigged to explode remotely. I'm utterly astounded at how numb we are to real acts of depravity and how incensed we can become at really trivial, silly issue. (For example, the turning off of some screens at CES.) People really have no perspective at all anymore.

bandit

I was with you right up until you used the phrase "candy-coated American lives" (though you forgot the necessary hyphen).

Look, I like Gizmodo. I check in every day in the early evening because I like how the blog is run. I appreciate compleat coverage of CES along with a good prank played thereon, and I completely loved the Halo3 thing.

And I understand when adjectives and subjective characterizations are necessary to describe, say, Apple's doubling of the iPhone's capacity, to make it appear as though it's necessary information to one's life.

There's a fine line here. You skirt it daily, and I appreciate that. I think it's necessary. But when you're posting a let's-call-it-serious post, why not let it stand for itself? This sort of post is a service to the world; why call it a "worst" shot? What's "worst" about it? That it clearly depicts something frightening and perhaps disturbing to oh-so-delicate sensibilities?

My ultimate point, Gizmodo, is that you're better than "worst" and "candy-coated."

willentrekin

@skulldriveshaft: I'm not exactly sure what you were saying, as your syntax was hard to follow. However, it seemed to me you were suggesting that we should have sympathy for the bomber, because his body is being treated so disrespectfully. If I misunderstood, forgive me. If I did understand, however, I must condemn your response. This man walked into a snack shop and detonated a bomb attached to his body, with the express intention of killing innocent civilians. Even if you don't believe that his actions against others preclude his deserving our respect, you must concede that, in using his body as a tool to harm innocents, and (essentially) destroying it in the process, this man has already shown far greater disrespect to his own body and life than any bomb squad could in having their robot roll over his corpse as part of an effort to protect the living. Our sympathy should be reserved for this man's victims, and for the family he leaves behind; he is unworthy of it.

quendiljt

@soulman: Well, you have to realize that there views on death are different than Americans. Look up sepikku on Google and read about how the Japanese don't see this as a problem. They will commit suicide because they feel its right, just like we feel its ok to have a bunch of obese people and not do a lot about it.

--Tito--

As gruesome as these pictures might be, they remind us of the disturbed view of reality that terrorists have as well as the bravery of those few who risk their lives daily to stop the madness.

If I never saw a photo or video of something how could I ever know it happened?

I didn't hear about anywhere else.

People need to see this, first to show how low of a value on human life, in all it's stages, no matter what faction, country, religion, belief, and second to create a void for discussion, someone who is the relative, sibling, parent, caregiver, of this person, to maybe stop, if not at least make think, about what they are being asked to do.

Whatever was promised to this person, if anything was promised at all, could they even comprehend it?

To vilify the photographer for showing us the inhumanity being shown by all parties involved in the last moments of this person's life, and the moments following the end, is the same as denying that this event even happened.

Whatever the article(s) say surrounding the photos, or even the comments underneath, the pictures say enough already.

skulldriveshaft

I concur. These pictures are graphic, but that's real life. These are robots doing extremely dangerous work that no sane human would be willing to do. Those bomb squad robots are saving lives.

If they want to be appalled and shocked by something, how about being appalled and shocked by the behavior of their fellow human beings BEFORE the bomb squad got there, when several innocent lives were obliterated by a misguided individual carrying a fistfull of explosives.

Oh, wait, they didn't see pictures of that. Out of sight out of mind, right? Yeah. Go find a vet who's just gotten back from Iraq, and tell them all bout how inhumane this kind of inspection is. They'll tell you all kinds of stories about the real inhumanity that gives these 'bots a purpose. I didn't go there, but from the things I've heard from vets, I don't think I'd be able to hack that kinda thing. They see the WHOLE picture; before, during, and after. There's a reason they go through so much de-briefing and counseling before getting out nowadays.

DirkusMaximus
