@labrats5: There are only three input modalities - stylus-based, menu-based (either with the standard two-button softkeys, or the RIM style click-and back, with both conventions approaching each other these days), and the now the iPhone, which is really the future of stylus-based.

Designing for various screen sizes and input modes is a hell of a lot easier than than rewriting *everything* for the half-dozen operating systems in use today. A commodity operating system such as Android taking over would be the best thing to ever happen to the industry.

0xdeadbeef

Also tried the piching zoom, and dislike that as well. Tried the gestures on a MacBook Air at BB, and I dislike the gestures even more than on the iPhone/touch. The gestures impress the coffee shop crowd, but not very productive. I take a real, or virtual page down button any day.

jimtravis

yeah, RIM will be fine, they make great products and are entrenched in the business sector for the foreseeable future.

All the other players are screwed. Symbian never took off in America, and with the market getting even more competitive, I doubt it ever will. Palm has been slowly dying for some time. Windows mobile made it by as the only US 3rd party smartphone OS for some time, but it sucks and will continue to suck for at least two more years. By that time Android will enter the market and become the 3rd party OS of choice, but this won't help either samsung or motorola gain share over apple and rim, because 3rd party os's don't really belong in the phone market. Unlike the pc industry, where all imput devices are essentially standardized, the phone market is hopelessly unstandardized. Having a unified os doesn't help developers very much when they still need to rewrite their apps to accommodate the hugely different hardware features of every major phone. By tying the hardware and software together in as a single platform, RIM and Apple have an unbeatable advantage over everyone else.

labrats5
