Monkeyboy, your channel changing speed is your box, it's not your cable. I have yet to see a HD box that changes channels very fast. (TWC, Direct TV, or DishNet, Panasonic plasma running OTA) They all lag on HD channels.

Yes, digital is digital, and therefore any conductor works, but packing all your signals into one cable is the stupidest idea the industry has devised yet.

HDMI cables require internal shielding to prevent the audio signals from interfering with the video -- cheap cables don't have this, and expensive cables overcharge you for it.

I wish DVI were still the one and only digital video interface. No signal bleed-through problems, secure connections, and impeccable quality without the need for expensive cable shielding. Unfortunately, much HD equipment does not offer DVI connectors these days, so I always use HDMI/DVI adapters on DVI cable. This allows you to use the cheapest DVI cable with no quality issues whatsoever (as long as you don't zip-tie your audio cables in parallel to the DVI cable).

For my upscaling DVD player, it works great...but for my HD cable box, there is a real lag (as much as 5-10 seconds) when changing channels, or going from live TV to recorded shows. I seem to remember reading that this lag can be expected from the ultra-cheap cables...but not necessarily for regular mid-range cables. But I can't back that up at the moment.

You also get the consistency of ordering from a known place. The Amazon stuff seems to be random collections of third-party vendor's stuff, so who knows what it is or how long it will last. There may be no need for fancy cables, but you do want something that will be durable enough to last through several plug/unplug cycles, especially if you have limited HDMI ports and are constantly swapping.

I spent hours pre-Super Bowl trying to hook up projector/cable box... only to discover that it was the HDMI cables not allowing a signal, just absolutely no picture (3 foot cable!). Trial and error and using better cables fixed my no-picture problems. I was sort of shocked. Maybe I just got a bad batch, but still.
