Bonus: How many people know the origin of the term "album" in the record context? They used to package 45s and 78s in albums [like photo albums] back in the days before the "long playing" 33 1/3 records [LPs]. [Whaddaya mean, what's a photo album?!?]

I've run into more problems with HDDVD, but I use the 360 drive to play em. I actually had to take "The Bourne Ultimatum" out of my 360 hddvd drive and flip it to the dvd side and watch it on my PS3 so I could finish the movie without it locking up every 35 seconds.

I think if you look at the money that changed hands ($150 million was reportedly given to Universal to go BR exclusive), this is a drop in the bucket when looking at the total income of these studios. In fact, there was an article here on Gizmodo saying about hte same thing (I think, maybe Wired). Not to mention, HD DVD did the same with Paramount (though not such a large amount).

I think all this arguing over which is the better format is a little ridiculous. The largest format was going to win. Period. No other factor was going to decide this (unless BR couldn't prove that the price could and would be dropped signifigantly, which it has). Our "society" if that's what you call it, is storage hungry. And the 15 GB per layer on HD DVD was not going to cut it for future media use. No, it might have been enough, I can not argue that. But if given the choice between a 15GB tech that cost $150 and a 50GB tech that cost $300-400 now, but $150 next year, there's no choice. Esspecially, when you consider that these companies are looking for a format that can last a decade into the future. HD DVD is not that format.

But seriously. if anyone thinks this was about payoffs, they're absolutely insane. This was about market momentum and security.

$500mm ain't much to a studio in comparison with home video royalties. Even the CHANCE of a more secure format is a huge draw. That BD+ can be changed over time and future titles possibly rendered more secure is very very attractive and is another layer of 'protection' that HD-DVD didn't offer.

Since the BD+ 'layer' is part of the disc and not the machine, it can be updated at any time. The studios KNOW the content won't stay protected forever, but even a 6 month 'window' extension is huge for them.

Combine that with the PS3 uptake and you have a de-facto winner.

@ferment78: Sarcasm detected, and agreed. If the best thing about HD-DVD is its name (which in the comparison here, is arguably true), then its no wonder it lost.

Here is what I don't get about all the people who claim that Blu-Ray is confusing because it does not contain "DVD" in the name. They didn't call DVD players "Digital-VHS" but people still understood the concept (although D-VHS did eventually come out and some people predicted it spelled doom for DVDs based on name alone . . . sound familiar?) Blu-Ray requires a completely different player, so distinguishing the name only enhances this material difference.

With regard to the people who think they need to buy a new "Blu-Ray TV", did these people also think they needed to replace their stereo receivers in order to add a CD component (although the Blu-Ray issue is closer to reality, because as Jesus said earlier, why get a Blu-Ray player if you don't have an HDTV).

Regardless, I don't fault the consumer for being confused, but I think it's too early to criticize the format based on the confusion. The public will adapt, within four months everyone will know what Blu-Ray is and a new generation of kids will be born thinking DVDs are things you read about in history class.

@Franklin Comes Alive!: The reason is not the drive itself, but the 360 hardware. It was ranked one of the lowest in HD video quality when compared to the other stand alone HD-DVD players.

The same is the case with the 360's ability to function as an up-converting dvd player. The quality of the image pales in comparison to stand-alone dvd players (and, sadly, the PS3). These of course are done with professional image tests. The PS3 seems now to have been primarily a push for this format, as it handles blu-ray beautifully. Microsoft didnt care that much with movie playback, so thats the quality of the image didnt get the attention that Sony put into theirs. They still have games, though, and an online system unlike any other.

Microsoft might release a blu-ray player, but i find it highly unlikely at this point. They would have to add the capability to handle Java in their system, and something tells me they wont do that.

At least they can still sell VC-1 authoring software to studios for blu-ray recodes.

Every physical media has some hint at what the media is (tape, compact disc, record, HD dvd), but blu ray doesnt tell me jack, unless i ask what its read with, and THEN follow that up with, what the hell is a blue laser and why does that matter? What color are my lasers now? Can i just put a little food dye on there and make it blue? Why are you walking away from me?

@impreza: 1 word: money. couple of hundred million bucks for Warner to switch over to Blu-Ray. Much in the same way HD-DVD paid $120million to Paramount to stay exclusive. In the end, Sony had deeper pockets.

@Y2KGTP: Why would you want an add-on player. Unless the player was built in to the system like the ps3, standalone players are usually much better.
