I designed this system and I love your comments. It was shown on Mythbusters and the Military Channel. It was a fun design project for the government. Not an easy one to solve. This system is at the limit of safe recoil so to shoot any higher you will need to mount the system to a fixed object or use a lighter line. If you guys have any questions I would be happy to answer them…

Sure, this thing will launch a grappling hook and string a rope for you very easily. But you've still got to haul your Cheetos-laden arse up the wall by hand.

And if it's built on the same business model as the inkjet printer companies, they'll give away the launchers and charge a fortune for the rope-and-gas cartridges.

I dare you to carry one of these around in daylight without a bullet-proof vest on. Maybe if they could squeeze it inside an umbrella.

@rimplestultskin: The fishing implications of this are quite exciting. Maybe combining this with an underwater version of the crazy vomit-speaker posted earlier, to incapacitate the fish so they float to the surface?

Poles and hooks are so 20th century.

just imagine putting this on a houseboat....you'd never have to drop anchor or go harpooning the regular old way again!

and @nutbastard: that would workdamn good too! except when the 350 psi shot pushes the electromagnet through the car you're aiming at, hits the driver in the head and knocks him out cold or kills him. lol

for that kind of winching, you need a pretty hefty motor and a capacitor that can push out a lot of juice very quickly. i think if i hooked something with this, i'd be so jazzed i wouldn't even mind having to climb the rope manually

I'm pretty sure this just fires a grappling hook.

But on mythbusters they did build a device which could fire a grappling hook, and a handheld winch with a small but super-powerful motor. Jamie attached it to his arm with some steel pipe, and used it to raise himself up to the rafters of a warehouse, but when he got to the top he realised he'd forgottem to create a way to release the rope, and he had to cut it and in the process, smashed his nose with the device when it flew back at his face and was bleeding a bit.

I wonder how difficult it is to successfully hook something that's 100 feet above you. If you miss, you pretty much look like a big dumbass. A dumbass with a cool grappling gun that you don't know how to use.

I've tried to build something like this, and it's always hindered by the weight of the rope - and that was sans grappling hook, just using a potato for R & D purposes. if this thing can do 100 feet straight up, it would be an effective close range knocker-downer too - the kinetic energy required to launch something like this is pretty amazing.

Of course, im not sure if that quick connect hose fitting on the gun above means it has to be plugged into a compressor, (which would make it tactically useless) or if it gets charged up via compressed air.

I saw something similar on the Discovery channel many moons ago, on one of their "Beyond 2000" shows. But it was a small hand held bag that just shot 100 feet of floating rope, for use rescuing people in a river or in water. I wanted one of those. This seems just big.
