There are still movies being released on DVD, and the Toshiba HD-DVD players are great upscaling DVD players at a nice low price, too.

You know, the DVD Forum can call HD-DVD dead, and integrate all the HD-DVD technologies into Blu-Ray 2.0 spec - after all, it works in HD-DVD, so hijacking Blu-Ray 2.0 would be a natural (why bother with untested technology when the HD-DVD guys already did all the R&D already).

Of course, a killer feature would be to be able to use an "obsolete HD_DVD" player, swap the drive for a Blu-Ray one, and get instant 2.0 support, too.

I have both hddvd/bluray (currently 67HD / 54blu)..

and there are still loads of great movies being released for HDDVD .. for example: American Gangster

I'm glad Toshiba is still supporting these affordable players, which offer excellent value both in upscaling dvd's and playing HD-DVD media.

There's more to these players than just HD. I've been watching the wars intently for a while waiting for the HD lemmings to start tossing their toys. I just picked up the Toshiba XA2 for dirt cheap. It is quite simply the best DVD player on the planet with it Silicon Optix Reon HQV video processor.

Since every conceivable movie is out on DVD (as opposed to 600-700 HD or BR titles) and will be for years to come it seems to be a no brainer. The fact that it plays HD-DVD is merely a bonus.

There are ways to upgrade players even though there aren't any Ethernet ports. If it has a USB port you can install updates like that and for those that read CDs you can install the firmware upgrade, burn it on a CD and put it in the player.

I think they're more pissed in the fact that their format lost and not that they lost to Sony. Don't forget they are working with Sony on the Cell Broadband Engine and researching ways to bring the 45 nm chipset down to 32.
