I got an iMac and am very happy with it so far. Now I know many of you are thinking "oh, another computer illiterate goes for Mac." I have a PhD from a very well known "institute of technology" and write software for PCs at work. I don't mind XP so much - had gotten very used to it, in fact. But when I go home and all I want to do is manage photos, music, and web-surfing, it would be nice to do all that without spending a full day trying to get simple network backups to work then find out its a fundamental vista bug. No thanks. And for all you who think a mac is nothing but window-dressing, remember it's built on Unix, and I'm looking forward to playing around with its guts when the urge strikes.

There's something elegant in the simple utility of a Mac, just like iPods and iPhones are appealing because they do a few things very, very well. Sometimes you need the full utility pocket-knife, however, and for that, I'll keep using PCs at work - but I won't ever think they're elegantly designed or efficient to use so long as Microsoft keeps bungling its OS design.

Yes Apple could do better, but it doesn't automatically make them the worst offender.

As to Macs vs PCs: who cares, just use what suits you needs and preferences the best. The rest is all interoperability, and this is a very solvable problem, which already has solutions.

The extraordinarily irritating need to continually re-enforce why they own an Apple and the need to try to convince me to get one (except for you x your just a plain ol sensitive fan boy). To me, after dealing with Macs and icrap of all varieties, most apple products come off the same; like an overly simplified "Tonka" version of the norm, stuff built for people who don't need (or cant handle) complexity, or for people who don't want, or need to learn how to do more complex things.
Irrespective of what any of the FBs say, I personally canNOT do everything I need to do on a daily basis with an apple I do with my PC, like the most basic of things. Although its not a daily thing, its a basic need of most true computer nerds: Build it from the ground up with components I PICK.
Yeah, yeah fan boys, don't go on to me about how certain macs can be "easily customized". Yeah. right. Can I pick my own case? Can I pick my own MoBoard? Can I pick my own GPU? What if I don't want to use apples GPU, or RAM? Can I pick..........you get my point.

I really don't care if someone owns a PC or a Mac. I own a high-end mac laptop. I use it as my everyday pc, I use it to play games. It's great. When I bought it I shopped around. A comparable Dell was more expensive at the time, IBM didn't make a comparable model, and I'm biased against Gateways. So, I bought the Mac, installed bootcamp, and boot into Windows when I need to.

It was worth it to me to not have to have 2 machines in the house.

Customization is what I'm all about, I've got a hand built watercooled PC with the best individual parts that I could find, pieced together painstakingly so my system is both fast & beautiful. If you ask for something like that from a manufacturer they will automatically bump the price to the $3000-$5000 range and you might still find value RAM or some crappy part tucked away in it.

For Joe Shmo it will boil down to price point, and since there is more variety in PC configurations it will always win the price war. Computer builders like myself will likely never buy complete systems because assembling custom rigs can hit any price & performance points that neither can match. Apples are more expensive, so you get the snob crowd who assume it's better because they paid more for it.

The only time the hardware savvy are forced to choose between Apple or Dell is when it comes time to buy a laptop.

Even as a designer I'm not sold on the necessity of a mac anymore. All the necessary software (Adobe Creative Suite ever since they gobbled up Macromedia) runs on the pc wonderfully. And with open type fonts there aren't any file compatibility issues anymore. Plus on the pc side we get Audition and Premier as well as more form factors like tablet pc's. I use pc's these days, but could go either way now since I can still run Windows on a mac. It seems to me Apple's just another hardware supplier just like Dell or anyone else. Neat industrial design, but I can take or leave the OS and the secret handshake.

When i did a price comparison my macbook came out cheaper than an equally equipped windows laptop of 13" which is the size I wanted and like to carry(Sony was over 2k). Went to the store liked the screen etc. Bought a macbook and, contrary to popular belief, upgraded it with ram and a hard drive. What sold me on the mac more than anything was bootcamp because in case I didn't like it there was always windows. I still use windows via bootcamp here and there. Mainly for programming. At any rate, I, like 70% of the mac users, am satisfied. I like OS X(and my new master Mr Jobs). It's clean and easy and well organized out of the box(in my opinion). I could set it up like that with windows but don't really feel like spending the time when i have other shit i'd rather do. Owning a macbook has been a great experience. So much so that I got suckered into an Iphone which is inferior to my old blackjack(to do list, video, chat what are those)? As for reliability of a pc, it's true things change. Dell's used to be solid. And western digital was known as western crapital for the sheer number of drives that computer businesses received DOA. As for the stereotypes, I pay more for green things(aside from my apple) because i'm idealistic. I pay for music because I want to be payed for my work. Anywho it's late. I'm done. And you PC Users are cheapskates. Nooch.

but i have tons of friends that use pcs WAY more than macs. i tell them they should do themselves a favor and get a mac - because all of them want something in the media-realm... that's hardly anything close to spreadsheets, programming, coding, etc etc.

that doesn't make them bad people at all, etc etc. i'm a mac user, but i don't yell at people that they're stupid. i'm just a designer that needs this type of machine.

I'll stick with PC's simply for the ability to customize and build the machine I want, despite the OS. That, and I'd rather not be forced to buy hardware to get an OS that is suppose to be so great but yet still is nowhere near touching Microsoft's market share. As for Linux, it may have come a long ways but it still has a ways to go. Sorry OS X & Linux, but its still a Windows world.

I was comparing the difference between a newly release revision and PC counterpart.

Though your comparison is just as fair, I don't believe the spread of $200 sin software really justifies the liable spread against Apple today. Jump back 5-8 years and Apple was grossly overpriced. The arguments just don't hold much weight anymore, unless you are purchasing bottom end PCs. Then Apple has nothing to touch Dell.

My mac works fine, I'm not an idiot, in fact I spent a number of years building and repairing pcs. It's one of the main reasons I switched to a mac, I was totally frustrated by the fact that every time I turned around there was a blue screen error, or some other crap because the "Cheap" pc makers used cut rate hardware to build the machines. I would personally rather be able to have a computer and use it for what I need it for than dink around with figuring out why it keeps crashing every 5 minutes. Or why I have to constantly reboot it.

I'm not saying that they aren't without their problems, I've had my share of software glitches over the years. I'm just saying Since I've been using a mac I've experienced far fewer problems than when i was using pcs. I also experience a hell of alot fewer problems than my roommate and my friend who are both using pcs.

I'm going to take your opinion with a grain of salt since you work for a school district and your inventory rarely changes much over the years. Computers these days are built up to the same standards as everyone else. In the past, yes PC's were a pile of crap (1995 and below), but they've been reliable for quite some time.

Anywho, Most of the people posting here are young and jobless, in IT, or veterans (though most of those lurk on slashdot) My first job out of college netted me 76,000 dollars and I've been working in a Data Center 2 years and do desktop support for both platforms. I could buy a macpro every month but for the most part, I believe that Apple is a waste of money that panders to the hipsters and people who think their computer solidifies an image. What people don't understand is that Apple sells a lifestyle of elitism and ignorance (which no one who's serious about going in IT should specifically embrace). They don't make bad computers, half my computers are apple's, but some of the most ignorant stuck up people use Mac's in general.

Buying a mac isn't going to get you a hot girl, 76,000 dollars, or give you success. Being open-minded and having dedication will. Ignorance and group think ultimately turn people off and close doors. I believe this is what Apple sells in their marketing and why snobby users have more a vested interest in Apple.

There's ignorance from the Windows camp, but they call it the cult of mac for a reason.

Keep buying those macs like it's 1990 all over again friend.

Like I said, we have 10 year old 1st gen trayload iMac 233mhz machines running major software packages for the elementary level. We dont have ONE PC purchased from that time period left... not because they where cheaper to replace, but because they were SURPLUSED and yeah we eventually bought new cheaper PC's.

Co-worker of mine was discussing how he had to roll-back to tiger because several of his devices wouldnt work at all under Leopard (namely his HD camera, 2/5 firewire drives, and his printer). He also experienced some other weirdness. Along comes the ellow mac-nut, upon hearing his situation u know what his FIRST respond was.."Well you need to buy a new printer and firewire drive"..WTH. And he went on to explain, with a straight face, that if they didnt work they had to be broken or to old to be supported. That he should just buy a new one. When my co-worker explained that they all work fine under Tiger (Imac C2D mind you), he then decided that the upgrade wasn't done properly and that the machine should be wiped.

My co-worker had already done the wipe/reload, mac nutz respond..."We'll you didn't do something right, you need to reload it again or check your devices.."

I have to agree with the point that many Mac zealots are pretentious snobs. But in the same breath, Debian linux users/devels are notorious for having a similar attitude about GNU/Linux

I've been a PC user my whole life, but I've switched over to a Mac in the past few months. I'm an engineering grad student, so I still run XP on VMWare to do things in Windows that are easier/faster than on a mac (for example, image processing with Matlab).

There are people who don't know anything about computers who are PC users, as well as Mac users. I think the "Mac people know shit about computers" stereotype is a dying one.

There are aspects I like about both systems, but I chose Mac because I wanted to experience something different. However, I dislike the "Mac is a fashion item" mindset, and I don't believe in the whole "get a new mac/ipod every year". I wish I could build Macs like I used to build PCs in high school.

Anyone who is too arrogant to see pluses and minuses on both sides is the true douchebag. Maybe PC and Mac users should unite and embrace diversity, instead of being platform racist...

Also, I'm a computer science major and it's nice to have a UNIX terminal whenever I want one without having to worry about emulators. Finally, I like not having to worry about viruses. Yes, I know there aren't viruses because the Mac isn't targeted. That doesn't change the fact that there aren't viruses. One more thing: I like the more app-centric metaphor of OS X versus the (obviously) window-oriented Windows.
And I don't mind the eye candy. Overall I just like the design of the user interface.

I would say that the economies of scale in the pc world are high which justifies the reason why you see PC's get replaced so often because it is insanely cheap to obtain replacement parts or get another computer (Core 2 Duo)
You can say the same for Apple these days on all but the very cheapest of machines. A decent Dell still runs 1200-1500 which is the same cost for a similarly equipped iMac.

Because unless your building it, you cant. The general public doesn't build computers sorry to burst your bubble. And in contrast why buy a 300 POS you need to dump in 6 months, when you can buy a iMac that will last you 3-5 years for anything except games.

Anybody who points out how reliable Apple is versus anyone else is only spreading bs. Apple uses the same parts as Dell, HP and Compaq these days. Hell Apple uses foxconn motherboards. The point is moot these days. All hardware lasts just as long because they're all using the same/similar parts.

Just because they use the same chips, doesn't mean they are not manufactured better. Except for the processors Apples have used the same chips as PCs for over 20 years. Yet year after year tests by major IT magazines have proven support and upkeep for Apple machines is significantly less, and Apple machines have a much longer useable life than PCs. The fact is, Apple doesnt compete with Dell, HP and Compaq because they know that quality trumps cheap. And slowly but surely people are realizing this fact.

I build my PCs, because I know Dells, and HPs are completely built like shit. But I haave no issues paying the price I do for a Apple, because I have been inside them and I know how put together they are. In 10 years of working in a school district I have never sent 1 Apple back for repair because it was shipped damaged. We have send hundreds of Dells at this point within their first 6 months of usage.

In total I maybe have sent back 10 Apples for repair within their first 3 years. Our Dells never make 2 before catastrophic failure and replacement. Like I said, we have 10 year old 1st gen trayload iMac 233mhz machines running major software packages for the elementary level. We dont have ONE PC purchased from that time period left... not because they where cheaper to replace, but because they DIED.

And what is this "justifying our purchase" stuff? Mac users know what they are getting into, and I have yet to meet any who regret the switch once they use it. I'd say the assholes are the ones who will buy anything new and cheap (and certainly not green), such as the Asus Eee and then tell you your a douchebag for not thinking they are awesome for wasting their money. Cheapskates only in the short run.

P.S I own a PC too for gaming. It's great except for the spyware/virus thing. And I prefer local coffee shops, drive a 10 year old sedan, only own 3 pair of shoes, and use paper plates and plastic cups all the time. thank you very much.

I would say that the economies of scale in the pc world are high which justifies the reason why you see PC's get replaced so often because it is insanely cheap to obtain replacement parts or get another computer (Core 2 Duo).

Why would I buy an imac for company use when I can get a faster machine for $300 6 months later?

Anybody who points out how reliable Apple is versus anyone else is only spreading bs. Apple uses the same parts as Dell, HP and Compaq these days. Hell Apple uses foxconn motherboards. The point is moot these days. All hardware lasts just as long because they're all using the same/similar parts.

Back when I was using Windows/Linux I had about $3000+ on credit cards (closer to $8000 counting all outstanding loans).
I'm not sure what outcome you're expecting, but when I was heavily in debt I was pinching pennies. Now that the financial pressure is off, I can spend a little more on the things I want.
