greenhornetc13 makes an interesting point. Disks aren't just useful for movies - I rarely watch DVDs, but I use them to install software, backup data, and transfer large files. What do I do?

When I start needing 15-50gb disks, will I buy a cheaper HD-DVD burner (if such things ever come into being) or a Blu-Ray burner?

Will writeable HD-DVDs keep being produced, or will the format actually die? Tell me, Gizmodo, I need to know!

Flamsmark

I'm still baffled at the blogs decrying the death of HDDVD like it was a better format or that there might have been any other conclusion to this so called format war.

The media has been hping the format war, but for all intents and purposes, did you really think HDDVD was anything but a placeholder/caryover tech?

It was an attempt by Toshiba to not loose it's huge licensing fee stranglehold in the DVD format as the consumer goes HD.

Recomending people wait a year to buy BD content or players won't drive down prices, but PS3 is the most futureproof BD player out now. Go ask Moriarty and Nordling over at AICN, they both recently went Blu.

Also, for anyone considering loading up on HDDVD, be aware that any of the online content may at some point in the near future become inaccessible or that there won't be nigh another firmware update in case any playback issues arise. So don't go loading up on HDDVDs just yet unless you like to continue throwing money into the funeral pyre of HDDVD...

PSN: kingpsyz

@Barion: Additionally, if you buy just a few big ticket items and get free shipping, you've practically paid for your Prime membership right there. There have been several bigger items I bought where normal shipping charges would have been dozens of dollars, but it came via free two-day shipping. Again, if you rarely shop online, this isn't for you. But Amazon sells so much great stuff, and so much of it is eligible for Prime, that I do almost all of my shopping online via Amazon.

Barion

As I recall, DVD movies cost way more than they do now when the technology was new. When I bought my first player in 2000, I was paying $25 or more per movie. Rest assured, Blu-ray movies will also drop in price over time.

I'm a heavy Amazon shopper and I'm a member of Amazon Prime. For $79 a year, I get free two-day shipping and $3.99 overnight shipping on all Prime-eligible items (basically anything sold by Amazon and not third-party vendors). This isn't worth it for people who rarely shop online, but it works great for me, because items I order arrive quickly and free of shipping costs, so this is a great way to load up on movies, CDs, and other items, taking full advantage of Amazon's lower prices.

Barion

The most interesting question, though, is how this war's victor will fare in the upcoming battle against digital downloads. With Apple and others now offering quasi-HD content for rental it seems more and more that the great Red v. Blu saga was a mere warm-up for Disks v. Downloads. The ultimate winner may seem obvious, but the route by which we get there will give us all something to write about for the next few years.

TomScrace

DVDs are only $15 during its first week out "on sale" and then after it's been out about 5yrs. other than that they go for $19.99. that's only $5 bucks cheaper than the blu-ray. (i was at walmart yesterday and with all this going on i decided to compare :P ). but nice try in trying to make it seem like a bigger leap between the 2.......

izim1
