@Sanfam: dude WTF are you rambling about? i could care less about this. i still see the DVD/VHS combos... who gives a shit. i'm just trying to explain that, unless you already have a HUGE HDDVD collection, like that "big baller" robinandtami, then a combo is NOT a good idea simply because for most people itll just be cheaper to replace the 7-10 HDDVD movies (7 of which they got for free with the player) with BD versions. you can do what you want. i only kept responding because bill gates over there kept trying to convince me that the combo player is cheaper and better than just getting a new collection of the few movies MOST people have. and on that subject: if you have the money to go out and buy stuff "just because they were on sale" then why are you crying about a few extra bucks it'll cost you to convert? you either have money or you dont. which is it?......

izim1

@robinandtami: you have my pity for being a fool who cant keep his money in his wallet. "on sale" is NOT a good reason for someone to plunk down $300 on something. if you have the money, more power to ya. if your shitting money, you're the fucking MAN! but just because you have money to burn, it doesnt make it OK to do it. so now you have spent $300 dollars on HDDVDs after you knew toshiba had killed it and you're talking about spending ANOTHER $500 dollars on top of that to get the "combo" player over the chepest BD player. that's $800 you're throwing away just because "you can". must be nice. and you say you have a wife? and she lets you get away with making stupid financial decisions?...dude.... you. are. THE MAN....
i can just picture you grabbing every movie that's in the "$5 bin" at walmart just because they are on sale.
but then again, rich folks, like you, probably dont shop at walmart......

izim1

I have your pity for having a decent movie collection? LOL I bought $300 worth just today because they were 50% off on Amazon. Most of them were only $14. I wouldn't have gotten half the number of BluRay discs for the same $300. Yeah, it's really awful getting to take advatage of all these fire sales. I do hope you will send my wife a sympathy card when owning all these HD-DVD's inevitably results in my horrible and untimely death.

robinandtami

@izim1: I'm probably going to get leaped at for mentioning this but why does the existence of a combo player seem to offend you so deeply? If you don't want it, that's fine. But that doesn't necessarily make it out to be the horrible evil that you make it out to be. I own one whole HDDVD disc, an HD/SD hybrid at that with the intention of maybe buying an HD player down the road, but I would be content staying SD.

Arguments against cost: Prices come down. The longer the combination players are out and the larger their production runs, the cheaper they will get. Remember when single-format players first came out? They carried quite a high cost with them, too.

Spares: It isn't always a horrible idea to have a spare. If someone has an HDDVD collection and a combo HD/BRD player can be had for a price similar enough to that of a single unit, the buyer will probably go for the combination device and simplify their arrangement, reducing the solo HDDVD player to a spare.

My own stance is such that if the purchase of steeply discounted HDDVDs is tempting enough to have me consider it. Combination readers will likely become the defacto long-term mechanism for reading discs simply because of the Chinese adoption of a format similiar enough to HDDVD to make such a product reasonable. If not, I can at least purchase the hybrid releases and get a couple of standard DVDs for dirt cheap.

The most important part of this is that I hate seeing people take trivial choices so personally. Someone buying a combo player is not going to negatively affect you in any way. Worst case scenario, combo players become the affordable standard through mass-production and *GASP* you never even notice the difference. If you can somehow argue against that point, then you need to take a step back and chill for a bit.

Sanfam

I don't know how smart it is to buy an $800 combo player right now, but considering that they use the same type of laser, it'd be insane for everyone to stop making HD DVD-compatible equipment immediately. I would imagine Toshiba would be the best at adding HD DVD compatibility to Blu-ray players at the lowest price (they definitely made the best players at the best prices throughout the war). All the HD DVD movies they've already made aren't going to just disappear, why not support them?

Charles

Some people do shit money.

1. Not everyone has a brand new HDTV. One of my older HDTV's only has one HDMI so that one is relegated to my bedroom where the only thing I need to use HDMI on is the satellite box. My two newer HDTV's have 3 and 4 HDMI's respectively.

2. Flawed logic on that one. The hd-dvd's you currently own are not obsolete just because they won't be making more in the future.

3. You might want an extra one because you DO have a large library of HD-DVD's and are concerned because you will NOT be able to buy a player in the future if your current one fails.

A combo player is a good solution for people like me who adopted early and unfortunately chose the wrong format. I knew the risks and jumped in anyway because the add-on for the 360 was cheaper than dinner for four, or a nice pair of shoes; and I could easily move it to either of my 360's to easily watch HD-DVD's in any room I chose. If XBox doesn't come out with a Blu-Ray add-on shortly, I'll definitely be looking for a combo player; and I'll bet there are others who will too. And yeah.... it would cost me way more than $500 to replace all of my hd-dvd's.

robinandtami

1. no respectable TV brand puts only one HDMI input on their TVs and if you have a lower-end brand then it stands to reason that you're not gonna spend on an extra HDDVD player
2. if you wanted to do that you'd get rid of anything that isnt being produced any more i.e HDDVD
3.WHY THE FUCK would you want an extra of something that is gonna be worthless in a few months? you cant possibly have a full collection of HDDVDs already for it to warrant you going out and buying an extra "just in case" player. i'm sure you have a ton of "extra" VCRs just waiting in your garage because you cant seem to give up your VHS copy of "The Running Man" and go out and get the DVD version..... and by your "logic"(and, believe me, i use that term loosely) you dont have ANY HDDVDs because you're still hanging on to your DVDs....

However, my HD-DVD player is going to croak some day, and that's the only thing I fear. If some company... any company continues to make hybrid players for a while, then they can count on at least one customer to buy their product in the near future.

Dearhaw

Way to go LG. Irrespective of the current people with HD DVD players, IMO this is just extending the inevitable. No one should be buying a new HD DVD anything. If you already have a player, fine, I'm sure there are still plenty of places that you can go to get the HD DVDs themselves (for a little while anyway), but if you DONT have an HD DVD player why would you invest in one now? Or even a combo, as the people who already have HD-DVDs are obviously going to already have a player as well, and those that don't, they most likely don't own any HD DVDs anyway; why would they.

FFS LG, take a clue from Toshiba and end this shit with no long drawn out continued confusion as to what format should be focused on. All this is going to lead to is more confusion, and if some corporate goober sees an opportunity for some extra cash by also putting out a new HD DVD or HD DVD combo player, the continued hanging-on of a dead format, with the increasing inability to purchase titles in HD DVD leading to all sorts of disgruntled and confused people.

Out2gtcha

@izim1: Well, a lot of people do have their own library of VHS' built up over years, including home videos and their own old recordings off the tee vee.

That being said, there is usually room for on player to make something that plays a dead technology. Like CruJones said, they will sell some, and as long as they don't waste too much time and energy on developing it further, they might as well make some and sell some.

92BuickLeSabre

@izim1: Easy: my HD-DVD player takes up one of my two HDMI ports, with the sat box using the other. By replacing it with a combo player I only have one device to worry about and don't have to abandon my HD-DVD collection. Maybe it costs a bit more, but it's less than rebuying the movies.

JonnyO

We posted at the same time IZIM1, if they have a HD DVD and want Blu Ray, then they can get the combo and get rid of the first on and have just 1 device, less clutter. :)

sandmanfvr

@IZM1: Well as long as VHS is sold, then it will be needed. I hope VHS dies soon, takes up room in stores. BUT, selling combo players like this means you are serving a niche market and more income.

sandmanfvr

@sandmanfvr: but..... if you're already an HDDVD user who "bought into it early" wouldnt you already HAVE an HDDVD player? why in the world would you pay for a combo drive when all you would need is a BD player? and if you DIDNT buy into it before, why would you buy into it now that it's dead and instead of just buying a BD player pay twice as much for the "combo" player?.......

izim1

They didn't miss the memo, they are smart and making a dual format drive will get more HD-DVD users, especially those that bought into it early, to buy their players. Good business move.

sandmanfvr
