1) The Standard Model already unifies the weak, strong, and electromagnetic forces. The Higgs is the missing piece of the SM. The Higgs field causes the particle to have mass, which we know they do. The force that is missing for a GUT is gravity.

2) ninjamurf really pointed out some of the usefulness of basic research. He did leave out some of the biggies. The study of naturally occurring radiation led to nuclear medicine, and to nuclear power. Early material science led to semiconductors. Early particle physics (like that being explored at CERN) led to PET scans. none of this research was done expecting what finally came to be. the world we live in would not be possible without "pure" research. do you think when si was first characterized the guy thought this will lead to a microprocessors? no he was just interested in si. but can you imagine a world today without the applications of si that came from his work?

3) there are also ancillary benefits of pure research. The most obvious coming from CERN itself. The www was created at CERN so physicist around the world could better collaborate. If this had not happened what would have created the "economy 2.0". i would venture there wouldn't be one. there are also less obvious advances. RF cavities (and detector tech) used in medical scans is directly derived from high energy physics. larger scale r&d in the production of superconductors is driven by high energy physics. with such focus on energy policy, in 10-20 years this might be really important. The LHC will also be the largest single source of information in the world year to year. this means they will also have to develop a computing farm (we call it the GRID) that is unlike anything else in the world.

4) The most important thing of all. IS IT NOT IMPORTANT TO MAKE MANKIND SMARTER THAN IT WAS YESTERDAY!

Safety concerns have been expressed by many in various scientific journals, mainly pertaining to:

1. Micro blackholes, according to the 'standard calculations' these are harmless because they would quickly decay by Hawking radiation, the problem is that Hawking radiation (which is still debated) is not yet an experimentally-tested phenomenon, and so micro black holes might not decay as rapidly as calculated, and accumulate inside the earth and eventually devour it.

2. If the hypothetical Strangelets exist, and produced at LHC, they could initiate a uncontrolable fusion where the nuclei in the planet were converted to strange matter.

So if it all goes pop then $6 billion+ spent on this project means your worth less than a $

My understanding is that a GUT would be the theory that unifies the Strong, Weak and Electromagnetic forces (comparable to each other in strength). Despite the "Grand" in its name, it's not quite a theory of everything.
There's very little hope in the near future of unifying gravity with these three, producing a theory of everything, since gravity is by far the weakest force (about 41 orders of magnitude weaker than EM). This is why gravitons, while believed to exist, are not considered part of the Standard Model. It would take an immense amount of energy to observe them. Their contributions to particle interactions are essentially negligible.

@JustThisGuy: I was talking to my high-energy physics professor about this, and he seemed to be more excited about the possibility that we fail to observe a Higgs Boson. It would be like a Kuhnian crisis or something. If you could ignore the billions of dollars "wasted", it would be very exciting for particle physics.

Altho - Higgs and Bose lives both [Higgs still living?] overlapped for about 45 years - I could not find any info that says they worked together on anything_ Bose 'invented'/ discovered the boson and Higgs theorized about a type of boson called the Higgs Boson_

So Higgs 'assistant' had not much to do with the Higgs Boson other than 'assisting' Higgs with the grunt work [like I said before] as all good assistants do_ Otherwise those folks would not be assistants and they would be doing their own theororetical work_

As for the money aspect of it, think about the TRILLIONS of dollars spent on "frivolous" things like entertainment- movies, organized sports, the arts, etc... All valid pursuits, but whose ultimate goal could never hope to be on the scale of the implications of this research. And when you think about, say ABC's advertising budget- probably comparable to the funding of this project- look at what humanity is getting out of the deal, vs. probing the origins of the universe.

In terms of the potential payoff vs. the amount of money put in - The only thing which comes close is the original katamari damacy for PS2- that was the best 30 bucks i ever spent!
