Flippin hot. A105-S4384 Toshiba Satelite. I'm talking barbeque your
juevos, sunnyside up, or scrambled. Any way you want 'em. If you grab the
power adapter it defies the Kelvin scale with its heat. I just can't get
over how hot it gets. I bought a USB cooler with twin fans that I use
underneath it, and it does help. So here are my actual temps, because
yes.I've gotten all scientific on this bad boy because when things are this
hot.you just get the temp checker out because you're in awe. (I even wrote
my first temp checker app in VB.NET because I wanted it to start alerting me
when it hit certain temps. Yeah I know there are programs out there, but I
had fun writing it). Record High - 86 F. Average - 75-80 F. Record Low -
50 F. I've had my laptop for 1.5 years. Love the laptop. Hate the heat.

I've got Toshiba Satellite A100-192, It's almost 2 years old. In 2006 I ended up in hospital with few black marks on my skin all over my legs. [it's 2GHz Yonah with X1600 radeon] I was playing something for couple of hours with my notebook on my legs [i was wearing pants! - tho very thin].

It's freaking hot! Now I've got a Zahlman NB cooler and it is fine.

Krystian Sz.

My ex-Dell Inspiron 5150 ran about uncomfortably-hot hot-tub temperature (hence the couple class action suits), so I'm guessing maybe 115+°F at the case bottom? Hot enough to melt the feet off the bottom. And that was with the fan spooled up to Rolls Royce Pegasus Engine speed and sound levels. The replacement Dell Inspiron 1520 runs like an ice cube, but also runs Vista glacially slow, and came with no tech support and no warranty, and no say in configuration since it replaced the old one (thanks for being there for me Dell!).

Back in may I bought an HP dv6000z (AMD 1.8 Athlon X2) and whenever I did anything more strenuous to the vid card than surfing the web or doing word processing the bottom area right above the family jewels would heat up to lava hot temperatures. I eventually stuck a thermometer under there to see just how low my sperm count was and on 3 occasions it broke 100 degrees F and once hit 102. Eventually this caused the mainboard to fail and I ripped HP off for a totally new laptop (dv6500t Intel Centrino Duo 2.0) and I've never had it get over 70 degrees. My nads and wife thank me ;)

wbemus

My CPU temperature readings hover around 65 degrees Celsius under a medium load in Vista (10-12 windows with mixed Word documents, PDFs, Firefox, Media Player, etc.). Under gaming conditions it climbs a bit, but it's never scorching. Ambient temps are lower, too, so it's pretty nice.

I definitely don't want to keep it on my lap for five hours, though - the heat, while never overwhelming, definitely makes for some unpleasant groin sweat. Yep, groin sweat - that terrible foe.

Daliminator

I don't know how I would get an accurate measurement of the actual temp, but figuring average body temp in the 95 degree range- Most of the time my MacBook with it's 2Ghz Intel Core Duo is just fine (meaning cooler than me). Sometimes it's so hot I have to remove it from my lap or put something between me an my thigh. My late 2001 iBook never even got warm. This MacBook's fan is noisy as hell when it kicks in, luckily that isn't often, but it does seem like the Intel processors create the heat.

No balls to burn though. Even if I did, it's usually sitting on my thigh, not my lap. The heat comes from the back, near the hinge. The front doesn't get close enough to my tender parts to matter.

rsquared

But, I also have a Thinkpad T60p and it's stupidly NOT warm. I can keep it in my lap and it's never warm; I almost think it's not doing anything. These Thinkpads are stupid good in terms of engineering, and look quite good to boot. Macbook what?

fuzzycuffs

My Macbook Pro (2.33 GHz) can rest comfortably on my lap when I'm just surfing the web or typing notes in a class or something, but when I get into photoshop rendering I have to spread my legs a bit (I'm male. thank you.) so as not to touch the area under the CPU. When I play UT3 in windows with graphics as high as I can get them, my CPU core temp goes over 95C and my case bottom gets well over 110 F and will burn me if I'm stupid enough to leave it on my lap

I used to be really afraid of my laptop's thermal issues, them I took out the motherboard and reapplied thermal paste to the CPU, GPU, and Northbridge(?) and saw about a 20C drop in normal usage and shutdown under intensive gaming.

BOINC distributed computing projects turn it into a nice space heater in the winter though.

BenjaminD

I have a 15" MBP and it runs extremely hot. Before I got the rubber pillars that iSkin makes that elevates the laptop higher the standard rubber pillars just wouldnt cut it and it would run really hot even on my desk. So these elevate the laptop a little higher allowing more air and heat to flow through the bottom. But if i lay on my bed and rest it on my lap i definitely need the comforter in between the computer and my lap.

Apple_Inc.

Disclaimer: I didn't read any comments on this post. (Sorry it's late and I'm getting over the flu and there's like 60 comments at this point)

But I win this post. I had a Sager 9860 for a whole year. Desktop Pentium 3.8, ran at about 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Blue screened 4 times in an average day and gave me hand callouses. Would boot maybe 50% of the time if it wasn't plugged in. Literally was a space heater first, a laptop second. I hate Sager. It was fast as anything in it's day, but had it's own corona.
I'm pretty sure it will turn into a neutron star at some point. Have I mentioned I hate Sager? Very hot laptop. Made me sterile I think.

SchruteBuck

The are "portable computers" and Apple states they should always be operated on a hard, flat, unobstructed surface for optimal air flow. Just had to correct the terminology...

And yeah, my MBP Core Duo gets pretty warm when I'm working in Aperture and running a few other apps at the same time.

I have a Toshiba R15-s829 TabletPC. It gets semi hot. Not hot enough to burn but hot enough to make you sweat. The fan runs a lot and that can kick out some pretty hot air. There are a lot of vent holes on the bottom too. In my experience this laptop is a lot better than my old HP that only had a small hole for the fan. As well as my old 12" ibook that would get burning hot and led to the graphics card failing and having the main board replaced 3 times.

I think it is obvious but the more vents and larger the fan it seems to run cooler.

gregh2000

ive got the dell xps m1330, and its hot whenever the video card is doing anything intensive. Running just word and firefox in vista, however, i can use it on my lap for hours.

There is a major problem with cooling in this computer, however, and if it gets too hot when watching a movie or playing a game (it did for me), a connection on the motherboard gets fried and the video card stops working. I had to send it into dell 2 weeks ago to get my motherboard replaced, and checking on forums like notebookreview and dell forums, i can see that the problem is very common.

danishh
