BT 2.0 has more to do with data rates and range then it does with... Let's say included stacks or profiles. Its like buying a 1st gen 802.11n router (back when it was draft) then when time passes and IEEE agrees on a standard, your shit is up to standard but lacks some new agreed on function to be included in the final product (I know this didn't happen but its example). Except A2DP is an extra and not the standard. But an extra than can be added later. How many phone manufacters even think to update the features like that? Just like with OS X, A2DP will come just when apple stops dragging their asses.

thechansen

@thechansen: Your right, I did know that the Bluetooth was hobbled when I bought the phone. But that doesn't make it any less slimy by trumpeting that it comes with Bluetooth 2.0, all the while being very quiet that it's a very hobbled version. It's too bad that Bluetooth 2.0 isn't a standard that requires a certain minimum of profiles to guarantee performance. Imagine if CD's were labeled "CD's" but didn't play in certain CD Players depending upon who manufactured the player. It's the same with the Bluetooth. If they advertise BT 2.0, we should have a certain expectation of what it's capabilities will be. Apple hasn't broken any laws by not doing this, but it would be nice if they tried to get by without only offering the "minimum".

newgalactic

Getting it right is key. And Apple is getting it right. With phones there are precedents: RIM, BREW, Symbian. All with positives and negatives.

The iPhone has the most solid set of tools and it is the most advanced operating system and already has a successful end-to-end connectivity infrastructure used by hundreds of millions of iPod and iPhone users every day. That's the tough part that nobody else has. Pretty exciting!

altus

@werk: If it continues to capture a significant portion of the smartphone market it will. And if Google, Yahoo and IBM are on board to provide an open service that competes with Exchange + Blackberry on phones beyond the iPhone, then we could finally see some real competition in this space.

By virtue of there being, effectively, one model of iPhone (the storage sizes are irrelevant from a software perspective), Apple is in a unique position to be the instigator of this type of change, and you can bet that G/Y/IBM would jump at the opportunity to take down the exchange monopoly.

AndyDuncan

For instance, to make a PS3 game you have to have your game approved by Sony who then allows you to sell the game and takes a cut of however much sell it for.
In this case all apps will be sold through itunes.
