O RLY?

My statement:

"And I'll stick with an OS that's actually useful for large scale businesses..."

That's large scale business as in corporate banking, asset trading, manufacturing, etc. Can you please point out where I referred to media design?

Go on, I'm waiting.

Here's a tip: The area of industry you work in is not necessarily representative of the world at large. Drawing erroneous conclusions based on your own personal experience without actually doing any research just makes you look like a clot.

Seriously. I bet you have to wear slip on shoes with a big L and R on the inside.

Sleeper_Service

I've got Vista on my Lenovo X61. I despise it. Freezes up the machine while surfing with Firefox all the time, forcing me to do a forced shutdown. Now, I can accept application crashes. What I can't accept is that there's no way to kill the crashed process leaving me no option save a forced shutdown. A couple of days ago it corrupted the OS and I had to recover from the recovery partition. On the plus side, that did allow me to do wipe the drive clean and do a selective reinstall and discover about 20 gigs of space on my 60 gig HD that Lenovo had cluttered up with God know what crap.

Serolf Divad

Here's the gig. I'm a gamer, so naturally I hate Vista. It's a bloated system hog that just isn't tuned for gaming. XP is. I used Vista so I could enjoy DX10, but the headache wasn't worth it.

Now, if you aren't a gamer I can see why you might enjoy Vista. It's pretty, the search function in the start menu is simple yet comprehensive, and it 'feels' secure.

Bottom line, it isn't much more than a couple upgrades to XP. It is not the completely new OS I was hoping for. For some though, like the 85 year old I tutor every week it works just fine. For more demanding users like me, it's rubbish.

spock11384

No, just proving that you're a delusional fanboy by using these crazy things called 'facts'.

Whether or not it's morally right thing, if you want to work with large scale businesses then you have to conform to their software standards - which would mainly be XP at the moment. You can blub on about OSX being superior - and for home users it actually is, although not massively so and certainly not to the point where you need to change if XP or Vista works for you - but it remains largely untested in large scale business.

Of course, the initial point was that, sure, an upgrade to Leopard is cheaper than an upgrade to Vista, however the hardware it runs on is much more expensive and, in all honesty, not really that much better (I'm talking about comparing like for like - high spec machines, not bargain basement $250 pieces of shit) in terms of build quality.

The there's the issue of lock in. Apple are proprietary - you cannot legally use their OS on anything other than an Apple product (and therefore have no support agreements) which makes them an unattractive proposition for large scale business. Yes, you can use Windows on Apple products but it doesn't make economic sense to do so, especially if you have bundled hardware/software support agreements. Until Apple make OSX available to third parties that will remain the case.

As for qualifications, I have my Bachelors, professional qualifications and am part way through an MBA (not a Macbook Air LOLWTFBBQ!11!!) so I guess that's why I know a bit about economic reality.

Summary: Hush little baby.

Sleeper_Service

1) Look up global PC business sales for the period 2001-2007
2) Note how many of them are made by companies other than Apple (Hint: it's in excess of 95%)
3) Now look up OS usage stats for the same period

Nothing's perfect, but I like Vista way more than XP. I had a lot of problems with Vista x64, but pretty much the only problem with x32 is the network file copy issue. And there are third party apps that can fix that until SP1 comes out.

Multiple monitor support, wireless drivers, office/outlook/explorer search integration, rollback mechanism, and raid drivers are just a few of the things that work far better in Vista than XP.

Most of the haters out there probably 1) haven't used vista, 2) have old hardware with bad drivers, or 3) user error.

reamer

Ok.Heres my take:

When I first installed Vista on my desktop there were problems. Major problems, so of course, I deemed Vista "crap" and re-installed XP. I have had a negative attitude towards Vista ever since.

Moving forward, I have since, purchased a new laptop (Compaq F750US-Turion TK-57, NVidia 7000m shared video, 1GB(upgraded to 2GB) that came with Vista Home Premium(Upgraded to Vista Ult). HP sure doesn't make it easy to downgrade back to XP, but I managed to get it done as a dual boot. I decided to give Vista another try and you know what? I like it. It works great. It was a bit sluggish with the factory installed 1GB, but once I upgraded to 2GB it absolutely flies. With one notable exception....network transfer. Theres definitely something not right there. But I can honestly say that Vista runs wonderful on a LOW END laptop with a measly video card performance of 2.8. Aero is smooth as butter in all accounts(Transparency, Flip 3D, etc).

So take it from a former Vista hater, those having problems with Vista either never use it(I have a feeling this accounts for more than half of the Vista hating), or are having serious hardware compatibility problems. Vista isn't perfect, but neither was XP at first, and it certainly doesnt deserve the bad press from all the bandwagon haters.

MeNotYou

My .02 cents:
Vista is what it is I use it occasionally I put the Home Premium Version on a pc that my nine year old uses. Its great. I can control how much time he spends on the P.C and what games he can download and play and view a log of his internet activity. XP does this with 3rd party software. My son likes all the aero effects and he finds it easier to use than Ubuntu Gusty thats loaded on my pc so vista does not suck it has many good points but people never look at the good points do they?

Juggrnott

@regnez: AMEN TO YOU for defending Vista or at least defending how ignorant people are who say Vista sucks. I use Vista Ultimate on 2 computers I made and they've given me WAY less problems than XP. I rebuilt my old Pentium D 830 to give as a gift and I remember how bad XP was at supporting Intel's motherboard. I had to always install drivers from a CD or download them from Intel's website, but with Vista it instantly recognized it and I didn't have to deal with all the crap XP gave me. And like someone mentioned before, Vista rarely crashes, unlike XP.

And for all those XP users out there... how do you enjoy downloading probably 3-5 programs just so you can use your computer safely without viruses or trojans? Yea, is XP really that great? Most of you reading this probably and saying Vista sucks probably use a virus-infected XP.

fusiongt

You put the belts on. A message pops up on your windshield. "did you put your belts on".

Yay flame wars!

I use XP cause it's set up exactly how I want, and what works for me. And for those reasons, I won't change. My install is stable as hell and there's no reason to mess with it.

Once an OS rocks my socks, I see a reason to change. Otherwise, no.

That said, I'm looking to do a laptop Hackintosh. Why? To try something different. If it doesn't work, I'll throw XP back on it and be just as happy.

Fellow keyboard jockeys: just stop, seriously...you like OSX yay for you. Vista kicks ass, go you. Linux touches you in a way that if a woman touched you in that way, you'd say "oooh, yeah, that's nice" more power to you.

ry_ry

Long-term user experience is more telling than hype. Even a respected magazine's review should be taken with a grain of salt as their review is generally based on a relatively short term user experience. Once one gets used to where all the different buttons are and learns how to take advantage of built in efficiencies in Vista (like the new Start menu, which is a total time saver), the media-hype becomes more transparent.

berribrand

@HeartBurnKid: Actually, I regularly run XP, Vista, 10.4 and Debian (and I've run Ubuntu and Kubuntu at times as well), and I'd have to stand by the fact that running Linux is almost never a simple affair. When you install, odds are you'll have at least one component that'll take some command-line tweaking to run properly. Not to mention, Linux just isn't a viable option if you need to use it in a professional capacity. OpenOffice is nice, but it doesn't replace MS Office. Firefox is nice, but if you're a web developer you need to run IE as well. Amarok is fine, but makes your iTunes purchases useless. Gimp is not Photoshop. Of course, you can get all these programs to emulate in Linux, but I don't want to worry about emulating them. I just want to run them. Emulating software is a whole 'nother can of worms.

Also, I've never, ever had a Linux install "just work". I've installed it on numerous computers, and every single install has required some sort of cli madness.

I won't claim that Vista is "the next big thing". It isn't. Honestly, it's a very minor step up from XP, and that seems to be to consensus among reviewers. Somehow that's being spun into Vista being the Hindenburg of software.

Ashground

I've been running some MS product on my home machines for over 20 years and 90% of the systems I support are also some form of MS OS. But that doesn't make me an MS Fanboy - when MS releases a turd I admit it.

Does OSX have some nice features - sure, so does Linux - I can't deny that. I can deny that Vista is good although it has some good features - the bulk though are nothing special - and quite a few negatives including - no direct root to controls that were available in XP and Windows 2003, missing shortcuts such as the up folder, incredibly bad network performance (AND YES - THAT INCLUDES VISTA SP1), incredibly bad file copy performance including Vista SP1, general sluggish behaviors and YES - THAT INCLUDES A CORE 2, 3GHz, 2 GIG of memory system - if it requires more horsepower than that it isn't a desktop platform but a supercomputer OS so it wouldn't be a replacement for XP.

I'm hoping that Windows 7 is everything Vista should have been as I'm ready for a new OS but not ready to go 100% linux at this point as a lot of my software isn't available for linux.

boe

So here's what my experience is vs. XP:
-takes way longer to turn on, shut off, and come out of 'sleep' than XP
-the "Ultimate Extras"...where the hell are they already?!? that feature is clearly NOT worth the extra money you pay
-my IE7 stops responding and needs to be restarted more than it did in XP (a couple/three times a month vs none)

Also, ever since I installed the RC SP1, my VLC player won't play sound the first time I open a movie. I have to close the player, then open the movie again for the sound to work, random and stupid!

@regnez: You know, it's funny, but I have yet to read a single positive review of Vista, whether it's online or on a dead tree. Even Maximum PC, who have wholeheartedly endorsed every Microsoft OS except for Windows ME, can't find too much positive to say about Vista, despite the fact that it's the home of DirectX 10, and they're still recommending XP rigs. You'd think that that might make a dent on the Vista fanboys, make them see that it's not some great and horrible conspiracy against their new favorite OS, but no. That'd require a critical eye and rational thought, and anybody who has that is apparently "a loser who cries on the internet" or what have you.

@Ashground: You've never actually used Linux, have you? On my home machine, on a daily basis, I use OpenOffice, Firefox, Pidgin, MediaMonkey, and 7-Zip. Believe it or not, all but one of those have Linux versions, and I hear Amarok makes a pretty fine replacement for MediaMonkey. And, honestly, though my Linux experience is rather limited, it seems to me that you really don't have to even use the console if you don't want to, if you're using a decent distribution (read: Ubuntu). The only thing keeping me from switching over is the fact that XP is still usable and tolerable; once it gets End-Of-Lifed, I'll probably go over completely. Of course, I do find it ironic that somebody griping about "uninformed" opinions about Vista would toss off a ridiculously uninformed one about Linux, but hey... Internet.

HeartBurnKid, creepy morbid freak

@regnez: "I would guess that people who actually use Vista, on a day to day basis, get annoyed by all the articles about how miserable it is."

* Raises hand

I've used it for a year straight on both my laptop and desktop and it's been great. XP is really starting to bug me now, since I've found faster ways to do things in Vista. What, you need to run Photoshop? That's easy, just click Start > All Programs > Adobe > Photoshop. Or, if you're running Vista, just tap the Start key followed by "ph" and hit enter.

And c'mon, "Vista made me a Linux user"? Really? The changes to the Start menu were so horrible that you decided to chuck out all your software and 95% of your games, format your hard drive, and spend the next three days typing in obscure console commands trying to get your onboard sound working, because in the end this is somehow easier than putting up with the (relatively minor) hiccups in Vista? Or were you actually trying to say "I've been a Linux user, but I tried out Vista and didn't like it, so now I'm like double a Linux user."

Egads, people! Get some perspective!

* Mutters something about "someone being wrong on the internet" and gets back to work

Ashground

I agree people should test for themselves to see what they think. I tested it on many machines and it sucked on all of them - even using all the tweaks on the web, updating all the drivers, using SP1, updating all the post SP patches. Some people say you just need to use it on better equipment. If a Core2 3GHz processor and 2 gigs of ram isn't enough - what does it require to run well on a network? My point of comparison is the same machine running XP (linux is probably faster for some things but I didn't compare since linux doesn't run all the apps we use).

For people that don't have the time to test for themselves I'd recommend just googling Vista XP benchmarks (you can even put in SP1) if you like although SP1 didn't improve speeds as much as MS said it would.

Putting Vista on a super speedy new computer with plenty of memory, a fast hard drive, a fast network card, a fast video card and a very fast processor is like throwing an anchor overboard on your speed boat or deploying a parachute on your race car.

Would I like to see Vista as a viable alternative - that would be great but in my opinion anything that slows down the clients that much isn't a good thing.

For those that think it is super secure, I think (just my opinion) security is probably related to market percentage - I think if Vista had 50% or even 25% of the market hackers would spend more of their evil time working on hacks for Vista - but it is like a grafiti tagger writing on a park bench - do they tag the underside of the seat that no one sees or the back - the most visible part? I think OSX would be "less secure" if it owned more market share - I'm not saying OSX is not secure, I'm saying the number of hacks would go up if it had more market share.

I'd also highly recommend people read the comments about Vista by MS employees that were released because of the new Vista class action suit - one of my favorites questions whether they should do the right thing as fixing the bad vista code would be too expensive. :)

boe

The general consensus is to not upgrade for a while yet till Vista works out it's issues. I can't claim to have used Vista extensively but the 2 days that I had to were possibly the most painful experience I've had with a new OS to date. It felt like I was more or less boxing with Windows instead of just using it to do work.

TheCyberBob

Vista is just bad business. I am not buying any branded laptop right now because of Vista. The latest laptop market is made silly with Vista. For most branded Laptop if you have Vista Business you can downgrade to XP Pro. Why not for Vista Basic and Vista Home Premium to XP Home? Once again it proofs my point that MS really do not care about individuals (the small guys) or the consumer market. For corporates (the big guys) they need to buy new laptop yearly have been complaining for a while now that they want XP pro rather than Vista. So that is the reason why Vista Business and Ultimate can downgrade to XP.

hkicedude

just to put my opinion in this debate above,
having had to get used to using vista(preinstalled) on my friends and relatives computers, I have to say vista is a mess.
It's not any more secure IMO than XP and the constant warning messagesare a pain.
It doesn't offer any actual added fuctionality compared to XP apart from flash, which slows down the system furthur.
Even wifi enabling using the default drivers is a pain compared to XP.
IMO, XP may be more rough looking, but it's more mature and has everything that people actually require from Vista. Plus I can get things done in XP much faster. Vista slows me down as a user

DagMX

I built a new rig with an Opteron 165 at 2.7ghz, 2gb of ram, and a GeForce 8800gt. I opted to try Vista Ultimate x64 because I wanted the best and DX10. Everything was great at first.
Then all of my folders changed to picture folders. Then I started getting BSODs. Then my computer just refused to behave, ever. I had a ton of malware despite those ridiculous confirmation messages that popped up when anything was installed.
Not to mention, I wasn't a true administrator. I had to activate the real admin account from the command line and even then I was still limited in what I could do.

I reformatted and installed XP. Crysis runs on high without issue, I don't have to deal with those awful confirmation messages, and life is good again. Say what you will, but as far as I'm concerned Vista is ME v2. I won't touch it for a very, very long time.

spock11384

i still use xp, mainly avoiding vista because of the extra bloat, which causes more system lag, especially when you're using a computer like mine that has any old parts shoved into it. some of my RAM is PC2100 (half a GB) and some of it is PC3200 (1 GB), none of it is really low latency, my processor is single core with a low clockspeed and a small L2 cache, and i'd probably suffer to death with any bulkier of an OS than i already have.

although i will admit that the aero UI is a great improvement over any pervious UI in any previous version of windows (albiet even more resource-hogging).

rimplestultskin

@jcy:

I read all the articles I posted a day or two after they were published, which was sometime ago.

And the cnet review actually does the best job of proving the point I am trying to get across: Vista is "very good", as the reviewer/review of cnet (and all the other sites I linked) declares, but the user review for Vista is low.

This means that intelligent, rational people are hard to come by online, but they do exist. Idiots and trolls, on the other hand, wait around every corner and lap up the chance to spew garbage about Microsoft products.

If you are not having trouble with a product, you simply continue to use and enjoy it. If you do encounter problems, however, what is the first thing many people do? Take it straight to the web.

It is easy to find people who hate Vista; I am just speaking on behalf of those of us who enjoy it and the benefits/pleasantries it provides.

...apologies if this is a double post. Giz just crapped out on me for a second.

regnez

Seems to be more Vista-hate than usual around here lately.

I would guess that people who actually use Vista, on a day to day basis, get annoyed by all the articles about how miserable it is.

Then again, it is very unlike the internet to rationally discuss a product, particularly something from MS. It is much easier to just say it sucks, spout some bullshit about what an awful experience you or "your friend" had with it, and move on.

Never before has a price-drop been portrayed in such an awful tone.

regnez
