I currently have a 3 year old Netgear router. I bought a MacBook Pro in June last year, and it supports Wireless N. Whats the main benefit of buying an Airport Extreme (which is included in the Time Capsule) versus buying a Netgear (or other manuf router) that supports Wireless N? I also like the fact that Time Capsule can be a wireless print server, since I currently use my Windows desktop for Mac printing. Last, I currently use SuperDuper to backup my Mac to a 500GB external drive. SuperDuper creates a bootable backup. Does Time Machine do this also? If not, would SuperDuper take advantage of the Time Capsule if I keep using that to backup?

monkeyboy

I called apple today and they said time capsule would not recognize external hard drives. Sounded funny to me, but that's what they said. I called because I want to hook up an external for all of my storage and use the time capsule for all backup. Can you confirm that the time capsule does in fact recognize external hard drives?

Besides this sounding like an advertisement i actually enjoyed reading this thread. And this motivates me even more to buy a Mac and a timecapsule too.
Or i can just go buy 2 western digital 500GB drives for the price of the 500GB timecapsule version and store all of my information on those two drives.
Then I'm right back to the beginning of setup with an error message saying "No backup volume has been selected" even though I did select Time Capsule previously in the setup process. What am I doing wrong? Does the volume need to be mounted? I don't know how to do that. Any ideas?

enufced

I've been using the hack to allow Time Machine to back up to a network drive. I'm wondering if Time Capsule automatically mounts/unmounts when my laptop joins/leaves the network (since it's physically attached to the network) or if I need to click in the Finder sidebar and mount/unmount manually. If it handles this automatically, I will buy one. If not, my current setup works fine. Can any TC users clue me in? Thanks!

stevecott

Printer

Yes according to Apple right on their website you can use a USB hub to attach multiple devices.

If this unit works like the order Airport Extreme Router then no you cannot use a scanner or fax part of a multifunction printer just the printer.

As for it not working I believe what you need to do is delete the printer in your system prefs and then add it again. It will see it with Bonjour. If you previously set the printer up with a direct USB connection to the computer it will not work until you do the delete and re-add procedure.

MacBandit

@brooklynbound25: Good point. Loud and usually hot (require significant cooling). I am looking to put the WD 1tb GP drives in my NAS to cut heat, power, drive noise and fan noise (due to temps).

What's the warranty on the Time Capsule? Usually you would get 3-5 years on a OEM or retail drive if you bought it bare.

getz76

@Wilson Rothman:
Functionality wise that sounds exactly like what I want. Keep the iTunes content on my Time Capsule, then have it available on my desktop and laptop. Then I can keep my iMac in sleep and just take my laptop downstairs with me to stream from Time Capsule to Macbook to Apple TV. And since it's all wireless N it should be more efficient then my current setup. I was mostly concerned with keeping my iMac on all the time, not in sleep mode, wasting power and potentially lowering its overall lifespan. I'm usually on my laptop when I'm downstairs watching TV anyway so this will work.

thechansen

Maybe someone can answer a question for me. I just loaded up a WHS store my online backup, but I'm not sure what is the best software to run on my Mac Pro. I tried using something like Deja Vu, but since I have a lot of data (1.2TB), it spans multiple drives in WHS, and in the finder, it shows some of the files as being 0KB, but if I open them, copy them back, etc, it all works fine. Deja Vu thinks that all the files need to be re-synced every time and it takes FOREVER. Is there a better solution, short of copying my data over by hand to the WHS??

jrog

@frigg: I still think it's steep. If you have no idea how to set up a network drive, then this could be ideal.

The 1tb is $500. I am guessing they are referring to RAID specified drives when they say "server-grade" storage. If you were serious about failsafing your backup, it would be a RAID configuration, so spending more on a "server-grade" drive is kind of silly. In that case, you can pick up a WD 1tb GP drive for less than $240 shipped. The performance of those WD is not as good as other drives, but the network will be the bottleneck in these cases anyway. Pick your 802.11N router of choice and either a network drive enclosure or a USB enclosure (if your router will allow one to be mounted) and you effectively have the same product.

You could likely spend $350-400, and maybe less, for a different but similar solution. Heck, the WD MyBook World Edition 1tb network drive is sold for under $300, and you can get a decent 802.11N router for under $100 these days.

Just saying, there are alternatives. I would be happy if I was still an Apple shareholder, because they are going to sell a bunch of these things in Apple Stores to people buying iMacs, and at these pricing, their gross profit should be healthy.

@bobdobbs: Network speeds are slow for this type of activity. For most consumer devices, anything about 25 megabytes/second is considered fast.

getz76

The latter method is ok, but having it go directly to the console would be awesome and open up some sweet HT setup ideas.

@thechansen: I should maybe have mentioned that above, though it's really more of an Apple TV review topic: you can't stream from Time Capsule to Apple TV. You can use TC as storage for your Mac, which can stream to Apple TV, but nothing direct at this point.

@Hiphopopotamus: It's my understanding that you have to wire the two together, as opposed to some kind of a wireless-mesh setup. You may want to buy HD-grade powerline adapters to use as an Ethernet bridge.

Wilson Rothman

This sounds like a great way to tie together storage and backup for my desktop PC and macbook air. I have an external HD now (i don't use time machine), but it is a hassle to unplug from my pc, plug into my MBA, and repeat especially when the drive is not centrally located.

Plus now i would have wireless access to my entire music collection from my air with the added speed of n wireless

MrBlahBlah

If I'm extending my existing network by tethering two Extremes to each other with an ethernet cable, that just gives me half a house with AMAZING signal and still half a house with no signal.

Hiphopopotamus

I would like to see some test done streaming content from the Time Capsule to an AppleTV just to be 100% sure before buying. I know it would be straight forward like using a USB or firewire hard drive hooked up to your mac, but that isn't ideal for video streaming over a network. Just being able to free up the internal drive on my iMac would be awesome, and I wouldn't have to leave it on 24/7.

thechansen

But just to be clear -- we still can't just plug our existing USB drive into our existing AirPort Extreme and have Time Machine recognize it without doing a bunch of stuff that Apple doesn't support, right? I guess now that these Time Capsules are shipping, they'll never get wireless Time Machine working without 'em. Oh well.

No, no, no
