I'm surprised that no one has said this yet but the probable reason for running out of space, they are putting all languages on the same disc. They did this with Resistance, if I recall correctly. 25GB should be WAY more than enough for any game even with large textures. Unless, of course, they don't know how to properly code.

MGS3 was about 10 hours at an average pace, or 30 hours if you're slower or want to do everything there is to do in the game. I believe the back cover also said it had about 3 hours of cut scenes totaled across the whole game. Don't get be wrong, three hours is a lot, but it isn't as excessive as you make it sound. Besides, not all of them come during the course of normal gameplay - you have to do different things to unlock some of them.
Oh, and you can say that line to me all day long and I'll still be getting this game. We don't even know the entire context of that line yet - it could be sarcastic or jokingly said.

@ripfire4:
MGS has never, and will never, use pre-rendered or FMV videos in cutscenes. Kojima already confirmed that this trend would continue in MGS4. All the cutscenes are run off of the in-game engine and in-game character models.

Now, do I think it's a bit excessive for Kojima to be saying that he's filling up a 50GB disk to the max for one game? Yes, of course. I'm just hoping that the quality will show through and give this game a reason to be so massive in file size.

Methinks some of you commenting on "FMV" have never played MGS, ever. From Metal Gear: Solid on the PS1 on up, MGS never used FMV. Kojima and Co. always used in-game graphic cut scenes. So, this notion that the disc will be filled with FMV is baseless.

As was stated before, it's quite possible he was referring to the single layer BR discs, which even though they are 25GB, that might not have been enough for all the textures, etc. he wanted to put in.

So, I repeat, because it's been beaten to death in this post, FMV is not an issue here.

In other new, I can't wait for MGS4! Yes, I'm a fanboy, but that just means I know more about the game than you!

Just read (I think) EGM yesterday, and it had a crazy-ass graph, tying in all the characters together. It's worse than a ritalin kid trying to focus on quantum physics.

And I love it.

It's kind of like, "All your base are belong to us." So bad, it's delicious. Have you seen the trailer for MG Online? At the end, a Soldier gets launched in the air by some damn machine, and he salutes the screen. Makes NO sense.

Last I checked Microsoft made more than just OS's. They make games as well (including the a well-received squad-based World War II game whose name escapes me at the moment) and, yes, there was whining about bloat when they put out newer iterations of those same games. Microsoft Flight Simulator is still considered a game by many, but there are always complaints of bloat.

This is definately Hideo Kojima BS. He's got a bit of a habit for hyperbole (he keeps harping on about how the PS3 is the only console with the power for MGS4, when clearly it doesn't look a million times better than what's being done with the xbox 360 atm).

If what he says is true, then he should sack the entire MGS development team, as the game clearly must be in horrendous shape programing wise. MGS doesn't even have any FMV!

Now that I think about it, this would be very much to Sony's advantage. There was talk a while back of how much of a blow it would be to PS3 sales if MGS4 came out on XB-360. With a cut-scene heavy +15GB game, MS would be effectively removed from the possibility getting the game on the 360. Not that the game has to be +50GB for Sony to receive this benefit, just as long as it's too big for a DVD. I'd personally love to play this game on a 360 ...after I buy one that is.

1080 video will take 4x as much space as sd video. For the comparison SD video was compressed on dvd.

40gb of space will be comparable to a 10gb dvd.

That leaves an extra 10 gb for more game and high res textures and so on.

Once you make games in HD there is only a little more space than SD games had on DVD.

This should play similar to a 2 disk dvd game. It's completely reasonable the he ran out of space, even with compression.

From what I have read, they were duplicating the texture files on different parts of the disc since they were having problems with disc read speed. If they really knew what they were doing, then 50GB would be more than enough.

Solution: Installation. It worked for DMC4 and would save space on the disc for commonly used resources. Imagine, compressing 5GB into 1GB then when installed, you'll do wonders. Of course, you can just add an extra DVD to install this stuff instead of a Blu-Ray Disc just for additional resources.

Back to the discussion though, I can only really think of two games or studios that would fill up a Blu Ray disc. Konami with MGS4 and Squaresoft with Final Fantasy. And they will be filled with High Def FMV and cut scenes like they ALWAYS have been. Disc capacity has nothing to do with game play length or graphics.

MGS4 will be 6-7 hours long, mark my words. The games are always really short with about 10+ hours of cut scenes mixed in. I have no idea why people actually like Metal Gear Solid. Not only are the cut scenes annoying and oh so long, but the story is unbelievably terrible. I had a slight hope this game would be different when I heard it was adopting some modern game design philosophy, but that was all shattered when I heard "Call me momma... Big Momma". I just need to say that one line to any Metal Gear fan to destroy their entire argument for why MGS4 will be good. It's like playing a game of rock paper shotgun. I can't lose.

I enjoyed the actual gameplay of the MG series, but taken as a whole, the games make me want to throw my controller through a wall. Every cut scene left me wondering "how long before I get to play again?"

When I read this I couldn't believe it either, but apparently this interview is really old, and that Kojima was referring to the 25gb single layer BD, and not the 50gb dual layer BD. I think it was said in a Famitsu issue last year. So I don't think that storage for MGS4 isn't a problem anymore. But then again I don't have any sources so..........take it how you want it.

Sounds fishy. BD is pretty big, and should hold pretty much anything they throw at it. However, we can't know just yet. Maybe Kojema is about to pull a truly "industry first" and release the first +200 hour action adventure game. That'd be fricken amazing and would peak my interest, whatever my origional thoughts on the MGS series were. Personally, I've often thought the series contained too much drama, but that may be a Japan/American cultural thing. And the cutscenes mentioned earlier were annoying to me too. But the games were always entertaining.

Thank you. I couldn't stand the fact that I would play for 2 minutes only to watch a 10 minute cut-scene and another 2 minutes to watch another big-ass cutscene. This is what they call "gameplay"? It's pretty pathetic if you ask me. If I wanted a movie, I'd buy a F'n movie.

Re: Video compression... what type of stsems do they expect the game to run on if it's exceeding 50 GB's who the fuck are they making for?

It's not really that cool, that they're exceeding current format standards, it just means they're slowing development by not finding an adequate solution.

This gives me a bad feeling. IF all the textures are uncompressed, IF all the audio is uncompressed, and IF the gameplay hits 40+ hours I can understand filling the disc. I figure it's mostly uncompressed video, and that leaves little room for, oh, I dunno, A GAME!

Of course, Kojima could photograph wang-shaped cookies, title it "Metal Gear 4 Plus Alpha Sneak Peek", and sell it to MG fanboys for a handsome profit.

This is why the Metal Gear series is the greatest ever. They are pushing everything as far as it can possible be pushed. I remember when MGS2 came out. That was the most incredible thing that I had ever seen on the PS2. Now this might actually be enough to force me out to buy a PS3. I would definitively need an HDTV first, though, but other than that, there's nothing to really stop me. I just hope they don't let it die with this one; it should definitely continue for as long as the storylines can take it.

Good lord. If they don't have the space on a Blu-Ray, my guess is that it means yet another MG title over-bloated with cinematic cutscenes that make up most of the "gameplay." That's why I haven't enjoyed a MG title since the original.
