Well it doesn't matter what chip it depends how much you can overclock it for the cheapest price. Then get the same performance as the higher ends or better. I'm glad AMD has warmed up to overclockers. Being a cheap bastard I enjoy the price war because I know I can bleed performance without sacrificing stability and save cash for other cool things. Another point-- with quad cores tri-cores- duo cores don't benefit gaming but apps in XP. Jebus-- don't even think about Vista.

jozzo22

@Frizzaper: last time I checked, the G0 version of the Q6600 (2.4GHz) out-performed the Phenom range up to the 9900 (2.6GHz).
And, price-wise, it's closest rival was the 9600 (2.3GHz).

So, the equivalent speed of Phenom is (was, at least) more expensive and doesn't perform as well, the closest in terms of performance is a fair chunk more expensive and still doesn't match the Q6600 and the closest in terms of price is nowhere near it in terms of performance.

I'll admit though, it has been a little while since I looked into all this in any depth and, obviously, prices will have changed. That will favour AMD more than Intel, as their prices will have dropped more than Intel's but I honestly can't imagine things have changed enough to have tipped the balance into AMD's favour in any great way.
Yes, right at the bottom end of the market they may be a bit stronger but the people who spend lots of money repeatedly are gamers and the like who always want the best that's available and, in that area of the market, AMD may as well just show a white flag.

Step666

I still think AMD has better processor designs but they have been way behind on Manufacturing. Their Laptop chip are bad though.
In the last round Intil was able to crank up 65nm way before AMD and even with the advantage AMD was slightly better. It wasn't until core 2 duo redesign and the ability to produce mass quantities of 65nm that Intel started to pull ahead. Now with 45nm their chips are totally better but if you took a X2 AMD and die shrunk it to 45nm you could crank up the clock 20% and still lower heat and power.
Intel is moving to the integrated memory controller near the end of the year and if AMD can't ramp up 45nm very fat they are going to have very big problems.

fastm3driver

It's all well and good saying they're going to produce 'em but given how their attempts at producing quads have gone so far, it's a little hard to get excited.
And, as Matt has pointed out, even without any delays these 45nm quads could well be a full year behind Intel's and (if current trends continue) they'll be more expensive and worse-performing too.

Step666
