In the UK the emphasis on alarms and other passive defence measures encourages theives to visit when the house is occupied, as the alarm is more likely to be turned off. The US really has a low property crime rate compared to a lot of other western countries. Anecdotally, when I moved to NJ I was shocked at how rare things like having a car window broken to steal the stereo are compared to my home town of Vancouver.

Of course, the US does have by far the highes murder rate in the western world, but it is pretty much stable whereas the rate in the UK and Canada is increasing. That said, the vast bulk of US murders are connected to the drug trade - your chances of being murdered are vastly higher if you participate in that sub-culture - otherwise they are pretty comparable to other countries.
