count me in. and while you're at it, make an adapter that can control my car's heat/AC because to put in a navi screen, i'd need to pull out my heat/AC controls and my stereo, and pop-out screens are too ricey for me. veilside body kit, fine, but a pop-out screen in my car's center console would scream "unclean design".

rimplestultskin

I understand the need to help install, but that is really true with anything over 37". As I found, "level" is not level, it looked awkward with the door frame so close, which isn't exactly plumb. Maybe my foundation started sinking, who knows?

Lizard_King

In those bigger sizes, the weight is a huge issue since it means the difference between paying someone to set it up or doing it yourself. Also, having extra weight sitting in one spot in the house is not good for the foundation. I live in a concrete and steel glass high rise in NYC and even here I can see sinking in some parts of the concrete floor. I think people don't realize how damaging standing weight is overtime.

I own a 42" Panny Plasma purchased about 4 years ago. I've enjoyed it. It has a great PQ. In fact, it looks closer to a CRT than a LCD. However, If the plasma manufacturers don't do more to address the weight and power issue, I will be buying a 52"+ Sony XBR LCD in the coming year. The LCD manufacturers have step up their attack in releasing the new super thin panels that will dramatically cut down on the weight. I hope plasmas can keep up.

Noobs-R-Us

Honestly, LCD is better in many ways, but more expensive. I will not pay more than $1K on a TV (a projector is another issue), so for the size I wanted, when I wanted to buy, LCD was (and still is) out. I have high hopes for a Kuro LCD, though.

Lizard_King

The "average clueless consumer"? This high standard bull. You my friend are as clueless as most others, real fact is that there are only a few who are knowledgeable enough to make a statement like that. Keep in mind that that is true regarding most things in life.

Plasmas do burn in, have a shorter life time and consume more electricity, this is something must of us have seen. Maybe not pioneer's well developed and more expensive than average tvs, but more likely the models that sell more, the cheaper ones.

And more on those who really know, those are the ones who work for companies like Pioneer and Sony, who decide to drop the plasma tech and focus on LCD, obviously for reasons conducted through thorough research and high level decision making with really expensive consultants. But maybe you are one of those? ;)

bjortan

Now that panasonci produces 150" from 103" who do you think would buy now sharp 108" lcd? so till now & in the forseable future plasma would still sits on the roost.

mavrick1368

Wow, so much to comment on that I don't know where to start.
As much as I loved plasmas, LCD technology (not to mention LED and OLED) have been nipping at the technology heel. Aside from poor viewing angles (and weight), plasma had the upper hand. However wasn't hard for LCD's to improve over time. This leads into my next point.
Another aspect to consider is manufacturing costs. Plasma, in no way, have been more cost effective than LCD technology. Lower costs of materials and assembly definitely go to the LCD market. Additionally, increasing the lumen output for LCD tvs was much easier than pushing the limits of a plasma.
So even though plasmas are the bees knees, it just can't compare to lcd development (in regards to cost as well as rate of progression).

I do agree, though, that its a real bummer if not a shame when the top plasma manufacturer breaks in and begins to market LCDs. Especially when they are re-branded.
Its just another day when we bow our heads to another great technology.

Phishy

Can someone tell me why people continue to mention the fact that plasmas weigh more than LCDs? Is this really an issue? My 42" Pioneer plasma weighs 66 lbs and a 40" Sony XBR LCD weighs 69 lbs...So much for that. What does this matter anyway? Are you lugging your TV around from room to room?
I am also in disgust with the whole HD-DVD thing and dont understand that either. I bought two players, the most expensive being $179 (my Xbox add-on), then they stop making HD-DVD, and here it is a over a year later, and all the Blu-Ray players are over - $350-$400???? Thats insane! How did they win?

I totally agree that the burn-in myth continues to perpetuate among the average consumer. The worst thing to happen to plasma producers was the use of the 1st gen panels in airports where the Delta logo was terribly burned into every panel in use. Low quality, poorly calibrated, bargain CRT rear projectors pretty much sealed the fate of the high-end 9" CRT gun models, which were much better than the class leading offerings in flat panels until recently. It must suck to be an engineer of a superior technology that gets snuffed by consumer misconception, but despite the stellar reviews of Pioneers plasma line, price point and historical performance wins again. I just hope the 60" Kuro hits the $2K mark for b-stock before change occurs.

edgarj
