They're more efficient and generate less heat, but they don't offer some sort of magic bullet in lighting. They're both just light sources. All that matters is the lens and to a lesser degree the color rendition. A 55w incandescent H4 or H1 in the right light can produce a beam that will blow your mind.

High quality E-code 5.75" round reflectors will embarrass these things. They will also kill any aftermarket HID retrofit and most of the stock OEM units on the market. Bust out something like the Cibie CSR and the difference is even more extreme.

HID retrofits are not safe. The optical systems required for HIDs are different from incans and so retrofits don't work. They throw out a lot of light, but not in the right places, giving the impression of better light, but actually reducing your ability to see. See: [www.danielsternlighting.com]

People have become so used to substandard DOT-legal lighting that they wouldn't know good headlights if they jumped up and bit them in the ass. The european-code round lights in my 25 year old BMW are better than just about anything you'll see from an OEM, on par with HIDs on new BMWs and Mercedes. They often make people gasp the first time they get behind 'em. Of course, they can be good because they're not compromised by having to fit in a low-profile non-round package like on a newer car...

I'm glad this type of lighting would be not legal given the fact that the Dept. of Transportation here in the US has already allowed car mfg's to use the new Xenon lights. Even at low-beam, they are brighter than normal high-beam halogens and are very blinding to oncoming drivers. Thats real smarts!

Today in Dallas it was SH2+1 foggy (I rate fog based on how it compares to the fog in Silent Hill 2... normal day is SH2-5) and some idiot in a Lexus was driving with their high-beams on... you know... how you're not supposed to in fog conditions.

Yeah, I really want these to hit the streets.

Also, as the owner of a clean, not-fast-and-furious 04 Civic Si... I'm sure I'll see these on a variety of race-blinged (less racial version of riced) cars from CRXs to V6 Mustangs. I can see it now... wiper LEDs, these, AutoZone special fog lamps, and blue-tinted headlights.

I wouldn't want to crank the AC on a cold day because those lights heated up the interior of the car by 10 - 15 degrees.

]]> <![CDATA[Rayzer Lights Video Shows Why They Are a Must for Dark Roads]]> Every HID add-on driving light kit I've seen is greatly overpriced. I very recently bought an H4 HID "kit" from Harbor Freight (a tool warehouse type place) for less than -$150- total. It came with two bulbs, two ballasts, and mounting hardware for each ballast.
These kits are dead simple to install, just remove the old OEM H4 Halogen bulb from the reflector and re-install the new HID H4 bulb in it's place. Then you plug the ballast power leads into the old OEM bulb socket (uses the oem wiring to supply power, no wire splicing needed) and button it up, you are done, except for possibly aiming the bulbs.
Bear in mind that unless it specifies that it includes hi/lo beam switching, you will only get ONE bulb for each headlight, limiting you to low beams only.
Kits are available that include the high beams for more money (of course) but since I converted over, I find that I dont need the high beams anymore. And yes, just like in the video, the difference is that much.
I'v been told that HID bulbs make as much as 300% more light than the standard 55W/65W Halogen bulbs.

The price is a serious turn off.

Items mounted to your windshield can be considered to block your field of view, which would give a cop a reason to ticket you. If they aren't somehow permanently attached (at risk of falling off while you are driving), that's another potential ticket.

After looking at the Calif VC, these lights violate section 24003: no inside mouinted driving lights, and depending on the vehicle, section 24400: lights no higher than 54 inches.

I'll pass, thanks.

You'd probably get pulled over for impersonating a police officer if you didn't have HIDs for your regular headlights, thereby making your "mod" look like you'd mounted blue lights to the top of your car.

I imagine many states have similar laws. Drivers who have 'KC' lights on their roll bar have to keep then covered while driving here.

Also, another law statss is that drivers can only have 1 set of auxiliary lights on while driving on state highways - so even if it were legal, there's no using this at the same time as fog lights. Found that one out the hard way a couple years back.
