Anyways, a camera this expensive probably has some sort of damage coverage, and if they guarantee that drops won't damage it, I see no problems in the guy testing it.

People are too fast to call him a moron or something, but let's say he works with some dangerous stuff, where dropping his camera is an actual possibility.

Testing it would be a better idea than having it break in the middle of some photo session.

On the one hand, he could know that there is a tremedous amount of consumer lust around this camera, it's already a mythical beast and is being uber-googled so he will end up with traffic. He surely knows the idea of what he's doing to the Jesus Camera is going to get attention, and he was obviously very correct if he assumed that. It could also be a critique of consumerism by showing people's emotional connection to the camera, or the worship and envy of being able to own something so expensive. So the sensationalist angle got him on Gizmodo and who knows where else already and where else because of it, so traffic to his website of his photography surely is spiking much much more than his actual photographic talents would gain otherwise. So, really, even if the camera is dead or damaged, it is basically $5000+ (with lens) worth of advertising which is money already well spent. Let's also not forget that he could have access to prototype/mock-up fabrication, molds, etc, and it could be a dummy camera with the sound of the shutter firing simply dubbed in. It could also be an already dead camera that he got his hands on somehow, etc, etc. This kid certainly has a talent for being provocative and taking pages out of the Jackass/2-girls-one-cup/Paris Hilton play books to rise above the masses. This is so successful, in fact, that I'm sure there are people all over the place, right now, making their decision on what Jesus Toy they obtain and destroy publicly. Attention gaining is a new talent of our time, and, here, I'll offer an instant fame idea for anyone to use for free: throw your own feces at Paris Hilton within view of the paparazzi, it might only be a misdemeanor and you will probably end up on the Daily Show and be loved by millions. 1. the only image on this page large enough to begin to allow identification of the camera (or whatever it is) has a big red "CENSORED" banner across it.

2. pause the YouTube video when the supposed D3 is in the frame and you'll see it's not shaped even remotely like a D3.

3. what, exactly, is the point in making a video like this if you don't *show* the camera - and the damage it did or didn't sustain - after the drop? what does a thumbs-up gesture prove about the impact-resistance of a high-end Nikon? if the video were real, the person dropping it would come down the stairs, pick up the D3, turn it on, maybe take a photo with it, and let the video's audience see the camera's working monitor. as it is, he flashes a thumbs up. right...that makes sense. "oh my god - the D3 must have survived the drop or that guy wouldn't have shown us his thumb!!" of course. makes perfect sense.

4. why is this possibly the only video i've ever seen on YouTube for which comments are disabled? so nobody could point out these mysterious little lapses in the poster's logic, that's why.

i don't care how many posts this guy has made to dpreview (we all know how much nonsense is posted to dpreview by readers every day) - it's obvious to me that this video was made, and fancifully named, purely for shock value (no pun intended).

it *is* interesting, though, to see how willing people are to believe such a transparent and poorly-thought-out hoax, and to see how much hatred and anger people have in them - so much that they see this little fairy tale as an excuse to spew vitriol all over the place, which wouldn't make any sense even if it really was a D3.

that in turn makes me wonder if these "angry" people are for real, or just interested parties (or a single interested party) simply trying to uphold the hoax by acting as if they're outraged by it...without first stopping to think about whether outrage is even a plausible reaction to such a story (and a video that doesn't even create the *illusion* that the story's true).

you might as well just move along. there's nothing to see here.

The lense would be the most likely thing to break since it has glass in it but since the lense was removed, there was less of a risk.

Besides, the guy probably had some kind of product replacement plan on it so it didn't really matter if it broke. Of cource, once the people that replaced it saw being dropped on YouTube all bets would be off.

@theotherstevejobs: Nikon would never use results like this, there are far too many factors that could lead to serious damage one time, and no damage another time. What if he'd dropped it on an uneven, rocky surface? Or what if he dropped it directly onto the lens? There is no practical reason to test this kinda thing.

(Not that I've dropped any of them from this height or on purpose.) The DSLRs tend to survive better than point-and-shoots though.
