I think itl hog it all for ps3 until you see multi disc games on the 360 due to the limited space on its disk which is what they want. Plus if you own a 360 itl probly have warn out by then haha.

tworkme

That HD downloads are nowhere ready for primetime. Key limitation are: it's quality is not as good as the real deal, that most people still have slow download connections, and that storage prices and capacity are nowhere near where HD storage would be practical. Perhaps Ballmer is too dumb to know that it will be a few years before that becomes a reality. I'm sure Ballmer thinks he can bend the space-time continuum so that we can skip ahead into the future, but that ain't happening and the sooner he starts his licking, the better off the 360 platform will be in the coming 5 years.

Noobs-R-Us

@tucker: You should have more knowledge of the point that you are trying to make before speaking about someone else. Your work must be glad that they don't rely on you to make any of their business decision. Microsoft is a computer/software company. Blu ray most likely will be in their future but it will not be for the Xbox 360. Maybe in the next generation of Xbox but definitely not for the 360. The Xbox 360 was made to play cds/dvds not blu ray. Their games are not made in blu ray. The reason they were involved in an HD-DVD add on was to get a jumpstart on the next-gen dvd players. Their add-on was not very good. It would take at least 8 months to a year for a blu-ray add on to be available. The average lifespan of a videogame system before a new generation forms is 5-7 years. It is already the 3rd year for the Xbox 360. If they come out with an add-on for blu-ray, it will not be well recieved by the general public. People who are interested in blu-ray either have one or they are waiting for the price to be lower. When and if a blu-ray add-on is produced, the price will be no more than $70 less than a standalone, and that is only assuming that an add-on is released this year. If it gets released after this year, you will probably see no more than a $30 price difference between the add-on and the cheapest blu-ray player. The people who waited for the price to be cheaper on blu-ray will pass up on this add-on because it would not be cheap enough and they would not want to risk the RROD making their add-on useless. The only people who would buy the Blu-ray add-on would be xbox fanboys with no sense to pay $50 more for a more reliable player. The xbox 360 is a gaming machine. People asked why an HD-DVD player was not included in the xbox elite and the reason was to keep the cost lower and to target gamers. Sony knew the PS3 would be behind in producing quality games, and they still havent caught up. They took a big risk in pushing the PS3 system as a blu ray player and knew losing the format wars to HDDVD would be devastating for Sony gaming. They were losing money on each PS3 sold. It took them over a year to come close to breaking even with production cost. It absolutely makes no snese for Xbox to come out with a blu-ray add on. Tucker, maybe you should stick to insulting little kids. You would look foolish with anyone else.

vertibraker

@makanai: Well, you're right in so much that it is a gamble. Its just not a very wise one. Now granted, team XBOX is in the gaming business, not the movie business so it's not mission critical to offer an add-on which caters to that crowd. Besides, chances are Xbox owners who have the HD-DVD add-on probably aren't going to toss out all the HD-DVD's they purchased simply to throw more money away on their Blu-ray counterparts. However, I think the team believes that the tech necessary for access to and storage of HD downloadable content is far closer to hitting consumers than it actually is, at least at a level where your average consumer will want to jump on the bandwagon.

To my mind, there are three elements required to establishing this base: (1) telcom companies need to greatly increase data bandwidth on a national scale, (2) a convenient buy/rental service needs to be established and (3) a set-top box will need to be developed for storage (face it, either way you're going to be buying another box of sorts - true HD content, especially movies, have insanely large file sizes).

The ONLY factor that could ever speed up the timeline would be the introduction of a compression codec that does for HD material what MP3 did for CDs. But even if that were to happen, a successful market would still be 3-5 years out instead of 5-7. Meanwhile, Blu-ray achieves greater market share and Xbox loses out to a potential cash cow.

kodo

@vertibraker: wow you dont know much about marketing. you have assumed that the consumer would only take game play into consideration, as well as assuming that the consumer, if they want a blu-ray player, will spend their money on non MS product.

rule number one in business, get the customer's money! MS doesn't want the consumer to buy a stand alone player from it's competition, they want the consumer to buy from them. and they certainly don't want to give the consumer any additional reasons to buy a PS3.

tucker

I think they may have to avoid Blu Ray, Microsoft has some ABYSMAL video playback on their consoles, and while I kept my 360 over my PS3, I certainly did not do it for disc playback. The original suffered from the same problems, banding, immage ghosting, etc. BAD decompression. The HD-DVD was OK, not as good as a standalone (compared to my HD-A2)

If MS adds a Blu Ray drive, they will have to face MORE comparrisons to the PS3, and those comparisons haven't been good for MS. If their disc playback is as bad as it is currently (with DVD and HD-DVD), the add-on would not be a benefit, but another nail in the coffin.

On the other hand, it's been said that a main issue affecting low sales of the Gamecubes was lack of DVD playback. If MS does release one, it's got to be good, it has to play Blu Ray games, and hopefully be a second drive for multidisc games.

Lizard_King

Compression is not a bad thing. Bluray is compressed, so is HDDVD, so are DVDs. It would be impossible otherwise. Do the math for 720p:
1280*720*3(24bits color)*24(fps)* 60(s)*60(min)= 238,878,720,000 bytes/hour (239gb/h) for 720p uncompressed video alone.

Tensor

@Noobs-R-Us: I doubt that we will ever see the quality of Blu-Ray or HDDVD discs offered as downloadable rentals or purchases. Like you said, Blu-Rays are 25-50GB; right now, the HD files on Xbox Live are encoded at around 4-5GB, in Microsoft's WMV.

And have you ever had HD programming from Comcast or DirecTV? Those HD files usually MPEG II streams and are compressed as all shit.

jzulli

@TheCyberBob: Yeah... There are those who still buy music CD's I guess.

Remember 5-6 short years ago downloading music was something for moderately inclined technophiles. Faster internet connections and the ability to compress files in the form of mp3's allowed physical CD's to wither and just about disappear. DRM barely made a dent in the flow from physical CDs to music files. Don't forget, hard drive storage is increasing every day and getting cheaper and cheaper. 5 years ago who was talking about 1TB drives being offered on new computers? Hardly anyone! The stage is set, and I feel the same will happen to Blu-Ray that happened to CDs fairly quickly. Or, at the very least, Blu-Ray will be the option for those who can't, for one reason or another, have access to On-Demand HD videos or have the ability to store the files.

DustyButt

@DustyButt: If not Blu-Ray then some other disc format will take over. The market still has to contend with the folks that aren't tech savvy, or the people that when they buy something prefer to have a physical copy to actually hold. Just cuz everyone here has like a bajillion terabytes of HardDrive space in their bathrooms alone doesn't mean that that is the norm.

TheCyberBob

Between download options, HD-On-Demand, and most consumers never upgrading to Blu-Ray players... What if it fades away over the next 3-5 years and is replaced by non-physical media that can be transported and stored a variety of ways (i.e. reusable HD-SD cards)?
